Rescue efforts are still underway as thousands in the Houston, Texas, area are feeling — and fleeing — the effects of Hurricane Harvey. In some cases, these refugees in need of help or rescue are pets and other displaced animals local to the region.
From Good Samaritans like Andrew White, who helped his neighbor rescue her dog (see above) with his boat, to everyday residents like Naomi Coto carrying her dog to a safe place as she evacuates her flooded home (main photo), heart-tugging stories from Harvey’s frontline abound. Here are a few of the most extraordinary examples of animals overcoming...

A New Jersey mother and her infant son were killed Saturday, and her toddler daughter was in critical condition, after their car filled with carbon monoxide - due to a tailpipe clogged with snow - as the father was digging the vehicle out from the weekend storm, authorities said. The fatal victims were Sashalynn Rosa, 23, and her son Messiah, 1. Daughter Saniyah, 3, was in critical condition as of Sunday night, Passaic detective Andrew White told NJ.com. "It's hard to lose them like that," the boy's grandfather, Felix Bonilla, told Wabc-tv. Bonilla also claimed the prognosis for Saniyah was not good.

The second "Joaquin" was revealed as the name of the hurricane that may or may not hit the East Coast this weekend, you knew what the Internet had to do: It had to blame actor Joaquin Phoenix and make memes about his destructive path. There was no other choice.
Perhaps the best reaction is this map using various Joaquin roles to demonstrate the potential growth of the storm from normal and tame in the south to wild and out of control further up the coast:
View post on imgur.com
Here's another good one, referencing Joaquin's brief, and odd, exit from acting: View post on imgur.com
Others stuck to just tweeting clever things like this:
So what you're telling me is that Joaquin Phoenix is so committed to his new role as a storm that he's actually become a hurricane?

Chicago — Before he became a famous TV star on "Friends," actor and director David Schwimmer helped start a theater company in Chicago with a group of his Northwestern University classmates.
Twenty-five years later, Lookingglass Theatre Company has gone from producing small storefront productions to a Tony Award-winning player in the city's arts community. And Schwimmer has returned to direct the company's summer offering, a crime comedy called "Big Lake, Big City" written by Keith Huff of TV's "Mad Men" and Broadway's "A Steady Rain."
Chicago is where Schwimmer comes to be creative.
"For me, it is my artistic home because of the company ... more so than anywhere," Schwimmer said, wearing a baseball cap and eating sushi during his dinner break while working on "Big Lake, Big City," which runs through Aug. 25.
Schwimmer was one of eight theater students at Northwestern who started Lookingglass in 1988. They were all working odd jobs,...

If you haven't yet seen the comic circulating the internet "Hottest Chick in the Game," you're missing out. It follows Drizzy, the ever unsatisfied rapper, as he attempts to get out of the hip-hop game -- which proves more difficult than expected. As if being sued by a nightclub for $16 million after his bar brawl with Chris Brown wasn't enough, now Drake has the hip-hop Illuminati on his back.
Rumors have been circulating for a while around Drake's affiliation with the Illuminati ever since he suspiciously got an owl tattoo and displayed a similar design on his "Take Care" cover. Whether or not this is the elusive Illuminati owl, symbol of the occult, remains unverified. But this comic gives us all the answers we need. The hilarious ride features cameos from all your favorite stars and possible secret society members, including Kanye, Aaliyah and even Blue Ivy Carter. To find out more,...

Kaiser Chiefs have confessed that they still crave mainstream success. The band admitted that they are still keen to regain the spotlight after suffering from low album sales for their latest record The Future Is Medieval. Guitarist Andrew White told the Gainsborough Standard: "We've been there and we've done it. We've played stadiums, we've had number ones, we've won awards - but we still crave it. "A bit of you says, 'Just enjoy it now and go with the flow', but the other part of you says, 'I want to get back in there and be current'." (more)...

Developers unlock £50 million for the Weavers' Triangle after government funding is guaranteed to improve connections to Manchester, London - and Hollywood
These are better days for Burnley which is digesting the long-awaited news that its direct rail link to Manchester is to be restored.
The issue of re-opening the Todmorden Curve, a brief but crucial stretch of rail track closed after Dr Beeching's axe in 1963, was previously highlighted in the Northerner, when Tony Blair's former press man Alastair Campbell – a well-known Clarets fan – spoke out in September about the trials of getting to Turf Moor.
The breakthrough has come with the new Regional Growth Fund announced by the deputy prime minister Nick Clegg, as pressure on the coalition to do more to help manufacturing mounts. The North West region's initial share includes the £8.8 million needed to reopen the curve and allow Burnley-Manchester trains to avoid a meander into Yorkshire...

The Kaiser Chiefs have said that they have predicted the recent UK riots for five years. The band, who performed at V Festival over the weekend, explained that their songs have always dealt with the state of UK culture throughout their career. Speaking to NME at the music event, guitarist Andrew White said: "It's funny, if you listen to our lyrics and give it a f**king chance, we did predict this. We sing about culture and the state of city centres and the state of society for five years." Frontman Ricky Wilson added: "I was reading an article about a moaning old rock star (more)...
