In January 1954, he was arrested by British police and charged with
homosexual offences. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison. After his
release, he became a campaigner for gay rights, writing the book
"Against The Law", and his contribution to the Wolfenden Committee's
report on homosexuality. This report paved the way to the
decriminalization of homosexual acts between adult males in the UK in
1967.
