Exclusive: Channel 4 has axed its splashy version of U.S. survival format Alone after one season.
The series from Squid Game: The Challenge producer The Garden, which has aired in the U.S. for a decade, has been one of a handful under consideration for a second series recommission over the past few months, we understand. Producers had been preparing for a second season.
In Alone, 11 contestants are dropped into the remote Canadian Wilderness, where each must survive entirely on their own. Eventual winner Tom Williams took home the £100,000 in September 2023 after battling the elements, wild animals and an extreme test of mental strength. The show had been unveiled by Channel 4 in August 2022 alongside The Traitors-esque format Rise and Fall.
Alone began quietly over the summer with an audience of around 700,000 per episode but this figure nearly doubled when consolidated viewing was taken into account, and the show...

Alexander Payne’s bittersweet Christmas dramedy “The Holdovers” is hitting Peacock on Dec. 29.
The movie, from Focus Features, follows three lonely people stuck at a snowy boarding school over the holidays. It debuted in theaters in October and earned rave reviews, including from Variety‘s own chief film critic Peter Debruge, who wrote that Payne’s “portrait of a prickly history teacher is the rare exception to the complaint that ‘they don’t make ’em like they used to.'”
Set in 1970, “The Holdovers” stars Paul Giamatti as Paul Hunham, a hard-ass, curmudgeonly history teacher at an elite boarding school who is tasked with looking after the teens who can’t come home for the holidays. When all of the other students are thrown a life raft, Angus Tully (Dominic Sessa) is left shipwrecked with just his teacher and the kitchen manager Mary (Da’Vine Joy Randolph), who is grieving the loss of her son.

“Freddie was a hoarder, he didn’t throw anything away,” said Thomas Williams, a Sotheby’s director who is running an auction of Queen icon Freddie Mercury’s lifetime accumulations. “His possessions give us an extraordinary 360-degree view of the man, from his childhood until his death.”
“Freddie Mercury, A World of His Own” is the name of the auction at Sotheby’s, New Bond St, London until September 5.
Among the items on the block: a black lacquered baby grand piano at which Freddie Mercury composed and developed some of Queen’s biggest hits, including “Bohemian Rhapsody.” It is the centerpiece of a sale expected to raise millions.
Almost 30,000 objects, artworks, items of clothing and furniture, photographs, handwritten lyrics and other items are up for auction. The items include his gold and platinum records to personal Polaroid photographs.
Mercury died in 1991 at the age of 45, just 24 hours after he revealed that he had AIDS.

Visual effects house Dneg has hired Tom Williams as managing director for episodic content in its VFX division.
With over 25 years of experience, Williams comes from Mpc where he was serving as president of visual effects. While there, he also held the role of managing director of episodic. Prior to that, he held management roles at Sky and Abbey Road Studios.
In his new position at Dneg, Williams will be based out of London and focus on expanding its episodic VFX offering, in addition to the work it delivers for its feature film clients.
“This is an exciting time to be joining Dneg, as the company doubles-down on its ambitions in the episodic VFX space to cater to high demand for its industry-leading services,” said Williams. “Over the last few years, Dneg has established itself as a destination for directors and showrunners who want to create truly spectacular visual experiences.

A distressing new poll from the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain has revealed that almost three-quarters of U.K. film screenwriters feel they’re not properly credited for their work and are being “edited out” of the filmmaking process.
A snapshot poll by the trade union has shown that more than 70 of writers feel they hadn’t been properly credited in the promotion and distribution of their work.
Wggb research found that producers prefer to credit actors and directors in marketing campaigns – leaving writers largely unrecognized for their craft. In other findings: 70 of produced screenwriters reported that a director has re-written their work, while almost 50 reported to have been “belittled and excluded” from the creative decision-making process.
Almost a third reported being “sworn at or otherwise abused” during the course of their work.
The Wggb says this treatment sits in stark contrast to the way that playwrights are treated in the U.

Directors UK & Writers’ Guild Gb Team For Combined Guidelines To Aid Positive Creative Collaboration
UK industry bodies Directors UK and the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain have joined forces to launch a series of guidelines promoting positive collaboration between the two fields that they say could improve mental health and reduce bullying and harassment.
The guidelines advise on how writers and directors can work together most effectively, setting up a healthy creative environment. They have been put together using first-hand accounts from both org’s members.
Points covered include what each creator brings to the table, what they need from each other to work well and best practice for collaboration, and what to do if things go wrong.
“This document encourages writers and directors to engage directly with one another in a working relationship based on open communication, understanding of their respective crafts, and mutual respect for their specialist contributions to the process,” the doc reads.
“It also attempts to demystify this vital creative collaboration for financiers,...

Over at Austin Movie Blog, Charles Ealy is keeping an eye on how the Texas Legislature has been addressing film incentives during the current session. The House and Senate budgets as they stand now have an extremely severe cut in the tax rebates, allowing only $10 million for two years total. In addition, the Texas Conservative Coalition Research Institute, headed by state Sen. Tommy Williams and Rep. Warren Chisum, would like to end the program that gives tax rebates to movies filming in Texas ("acceptable" movies, that is). The University of Texas is hosting a collection of short animated films, curated by local filmmaker Geoff Marslett.
