- A member of the legendary Easy Company of the US Army's 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division. After the jump into Normandy, the commanding officer of Easy Company could not be located and Winters became the commanding officer. First entered the war as a lieutenant, and left a year later as a major. He was portrayed by 'Damian Lewis' in the starring role of the mini-series "Band of Brothers" (2001).
- Richard Winters was an American officer, who rose to the rank of Major, who served with the E (Easy) Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division (The Screaming Eagles) and participated in the D-Day invasion in WWII right from the start of June 6, 1944.
He became a recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross, Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart, 1939-1945 Croix de Guerre with palm (France), Liberation Medal (France ), Croix de Guerre (Belgium), and was entitled to wear the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Parachutist Badge with two combat jump stars. - He was a recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross awarded for his actions on D-Day, June 6, 1944, for leading an attack to destroy four German 105 mm gun batteries pointing at Utah Beach.
- After leaving the military at the end of World War II, he was called back to train soldiers for the Korean War, but refused to participate in the war itself.
