Nearly four years have gone by since it was announced that Treehouse Pictures was developing a remake of the 1991 Christina Applegate cult classic Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead (watch it Here) that would be directed by Bille Woodruff (Beauty Shop and the Honey quadrilogy) from a screenplay by Chuck Hayward (Dear White People). All that was revealed about the project at the time was that it would be “a present-day retelling centered on a black family.” Then that’s the last we heard about it. Apparently it made its way through production while flying under the radar, though, because Film Ratings has revealed that the remake has already received its rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board… and it’s a surprising one. While the original film was rated PG-13, the remake has earned an R rating for “teen drug use, language and some sexual references.”

The 1991 black comedy Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead has become a cult classic over the years, and we first heard rumblings about a modern day remake back in 2020.
Deadline had reported at the time that a “diverse remake” of the ’90s movie was in the works from Treehouse Pictures, said to be a “present-day retelling centered on a Black family.”
In that original May 2020 report, Deadline noted that Bille Woodruff was attached to direct a script written by Chuck Hayward (“Dear White People,” “WandaVision”), with the studio teasing a “new interpretation that is as funny and outrageous as the original but also smart and connected to the world today.”
So what’s the latest on the Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead remake? Well, an official listing from the MPA this week reveals that the upcoming film is rated “R,” which comes as a bit of a surprise considering...

Peacock, the home of the new slasher movie Sick and the upcoming Friday the 13th series “Crystal Lake,” has announced this week that they’ve cancelled “Vampire Academy,” a new series based on Richelle Mead’s line of same-titled books. The drama-horror series had only opened up for business this past September, and it’s gotten the axe after just one season.
Deadline explains, “Deadline understands that execs at Peacock were happy with both shows creatively but they just didn’t find the requisite audience to justify further seasons.”
Here’s the synopsis for the series: “In a world of privilege and glamour, two young women’s friendship transcends their strikingly different classes as they prepare to complete their education and enter vampire society. One as a powerful Royal, the other a half-vampire Guardian trained to protect against the savage ‘Strigoi’ who threaten to tear their society apart.

Exclusive: Tyra Banks (America’s Next Top Model) has signed on for a role in Treehouse Pictures’ remake of Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead, which is heading into production in Los Angeles in July.
The original 1991 film, from director Stephen Herek, follows Sue Ellen “Swell” Crandell (Christina Applegate), a 17-year-old forced to take care of her four younger siblings after the babysitter hired by her mother dies while mom’s out of town. While the Warner Bros comedy also starring Joanna Cassidy, Keith Coogan, John Getz and Josh Charles didn’t land as a major hit, either critically or commercially, it has fostered a cult following in the decades since.
Treehouse’s remake is billed as a present-day retelling centered on a Black family. Banks will play Cassidy’s character Rose, a fashion executive at General Apparel West, who takes a chance on Swell by hiring her as an executive assistant.

Choreographer Dondraico Johnson brought his talent for putting together captivating live performances into National Geographic’s “Genius: Aretha,” where he reimagined some of the Queen of Soul’s most memorable concerts, down to hundreds of extras all feeling the music through period appropriate moves. His efforts on the eight-episode limited series earned him his first attention from the Television Academy, picking up a nomination in the scripted programming choreography category.
What was your philosophy for how much to move-by-move recreate actual Aretha Franklin performances?
In my opinion, choreography is a thin line between doing research and making references to things and doing research and getting the vibe and making it your own. And it was important to me, and to [executive producer and director] Anthony Hemingway, that I could make it my own. If I couldn’t make it my own, it would be somebody else’s choreography.

2000’s Bring It On is a very odd duck.
It’s not that the film is particularly innovative about how it spins its narrative – there’s a pretty standard set of beats in place for a sports movie – but traditionally, sports movies don’t tend to have a predominantly female cast (and even something like A League Of Their Own was somewhat led by Tom Hanks). Not only that, it’s a movie with a predominately female cast that isn’t entirely focused on love or romance.

Disney's Zootopia dominated once again this weekend, bringing in an estimated $50 million in its sophomore session, pushing the film over $140 million domestically in its first ten days of release. Leading the weekend's four new wide releases is 10 Cloverfield Lane with a strong opening weekend performance while The Perfect Match, The Young Messiah and The Brothers Grimsby settled in slots six through eight in the weekend top ten. Dropping only 33.4%, Zootopia is the #1 film for the second weekend in a row as its domestic cume has now climbed to $142.6 million. Internationally the animated feature took in an additional $83.1 million, which is actually up 25% from last weekend. The jump is largely due to the estimated $56.5 million it brought in this weekend in China, an increase of a whopping 139% as its global cume now stands at $431.3 million. As far as the weekend's new releases are concerned, 10 Cloverfield Lane entered its opening weekend with incredibly strong reviews.

Pleasant enough, if not paper-thin and featherweight, The Perfect Match is a bland picture starring attractive people that never quite seems to connect the dots. The romance at the core of the story is between Charlie (Terrence Jenkins), an agent with an incredible home, and Eva (Cassie Ventura, perhaps best known as R&B singer Cassie who had a hit single Me & U a few years ago), a gorgeous women of little substance — although we learn she does like House of Cards. At one point in their friends with benefits arrangement, director Billie Woodruff (Honey, Addicted) makes his point with a montage scored to current radio hit Player by Tinashe, in one of the many moments that feel a little too on the nose.
With an uneven ensemble, The Perfect Match attempts to add context to Charlie’s life: his sister Sherry (Paula Patton) is conveniently a therapist who offers...

10 Cloverfield Lane is the latest mystery box thriller from J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot and it's looking to top a list of four new wide releases this weekend. Additional new releases include Sacha Baron Cohen's comedy The Brothers Grimsby, the new faith-based feature The Young Messiah and the romantic-comedy The Perfect Match. All four will be competing with some strong holdovers, most notably Disney's Zootopia, which will be holding on to the top spot for a second week in a row, and Deadpool, which could top $10 million in its fifth weekend in release. Zootopia enters its second weekend in release after breaking the The Lorax's March opening weekend record for an animated film. As such, it seems appropriate to use The Lorax's 44.7% second weekend drop as a basis for comparison this weekend. On a daily basis Zootopia has performed well when compared to The Lorax, suggesting the smart money...

This rom-com concept is so overdone and, quite frankly, doesn't excite me at all, I'm sorry to say. I'm sure films like this have their audience, so I can't dismiss it entirely. But, really, unless there's some surprise twist, or the filmmakers plan to turn hackneyed ideas on their heads to create something fresh and different, can we please move on from this kind of unimaginative, unoriginal storytelling? Terrence Jenkins, Paula Patton, Kali Hawk and Joe Pantoliano will all star in a Queen Latifah/Flavor Unit-produced rom-come titled "The Perfect Match." “Drumline: A New Beat” won't just pick up where the original 2002 feature film left off. According to director Bille Woodruff, the VH1 original movie will put a new spin on the story of the Atlanta A&T University drumline, with stepped up routines, a gay love story and a female lead. “The story will be different because it's about a girl, a female coming into this world that many people think of as being more male driven, and trying to get respect,” Woodruff tells TheWrap. “Addicted” steamed up the box office this weekend — taking in another $3.4 million for a per location average of $3,279. That was enough to push its 10-day domestic total to $12.7 million — more than double its $5 million production budget. Despite the low-budget erotic thriller's success, director Bille Woodruff tells TheWrap, the film almost didn't get made. “It was very difficult to find an actress who was willing to do everything that was required for the film and to be fearless, because she has to have sex with three guys,” he said. The hunks of Addicted may have looked confident on screen in their birthday suits, but William Levy, Tyson Beckford and Boris Kodjoe all had concerns about stripping down. The actors talk about the preparation for the intimate scenes including Tyson oiling up his behind to avoid the ashy look, and director Billie Woodruff reveals one of the actors needed a special extra large wardrobe piece to cover up.

Chicago – The stylings of author Zane, who has dominated the best seller list and pay cable networks for several years with her steamy and sensually oriented stories, gets to the big screen with the recently released “Addicted.” Actors Boris Kodjoe and Tyson Beckford are part of the ensemble cast.
“Addicted” is the story of Zoe (Sharon Leal), whose life seems perfect with her husband Jason (Boris Kodjoe) and three children. There is something missing from her life, however, and she begins a series of affairs with other men. This leads to an addiction with the thrill of the hunt and capture, and the number of conquests puts her on a dangerous path that could cost Zoe her husband, family and perhaps her life.

Who won at the box office this weekend? Sure, "Gone Girl" earned the most money -- an estimated $26.8 million -- but several other movies could also plausibly claim victory and bragging rights by different measures of success. Overall, this was a good weekend for nearly every new film and many holdovers, with the total box office up 30 percent from the same weekend last year (and that was when "Captain Phillips" opened and "Gravity" was in its second weekend). And, like last weekend, the plenty-to-go-around results suggest that the long slump of summer and early fall is finally over.
So, which movie enjoyed the strongest performance this weekend? Here are the contenders:
"Gone Girl." Not only did the movie remain on top for a second weekend, holding off all newcomers, but it did so with better numbers than anyone expected. Its estimated $26.8 million is a good $2 or $3 million more than the...

A Dirty Shame: Woodruff’s Erotic Fiction Adaptation Flatlines
Demurely arriving before the anticipated film version of E.L. James’ erotic fiction nonsense Fifty Shades of Grey comes the first adaptation of Zane’s 2001 novel, Addicted. Having had well over a decade to build her fan base, it’s surprising that it has taken so long for such a reality to transpire, though marketing for the title has been curiously slim considering Bille Woodruff is at the helm. Distributed by Lionsgate boutique division Codeblack, the film wasn’t screened for critics, which isn’t generally a vote of confidence. While those who know and appreciate Zane’s work, including a fan base that would appear to be mostly made up of heterosexual black women, will be curious to experience Woodruff’s film version, the only point it proves is that silliness knows no racial bounds.

With its story of a married woman led astray into an affair by her sex addiction, “Addicted” doesn't fail because it wants to provide steamy, soapy melodrama to a mainstream audience; its faults are a function of its judgment, not of its genre. Adapting the work of the best-selling author Zane (aka Kristina Roberts), director Bille Woodruff (“Honey,” “Beauty Shop”) is trapped by Christina Welsh and Ernie Barbarash's script. The material swings between the sensual and the puritanical with whiplash-inducing speed; the dialogue all too often has the flat, dead sound of a first draft. Also read: ‘Nymphomaniac, Vols.
