The first high-profile political thriller to broach the Trump era could be coming from an unexpected direction — China.
Award-winning Chinese auteur Wang Quan'an has signed to write and direct American Wall, a U.S.-set feature that will delve headlong into the current politically charged moment. Dubbed "a tale of greed, vengeance, sex and ambition," the film is set around President Donald Trump's infamous U.S.-Mexico border wall. It will be Wang's first English-language film.
Upstart New York-based indie film company Lupi Pictures is producing the project, which is expected to begin filming later this year in New York and Berlin.

Chinese actors with a history of drug use or involvement with prostitution are reportedly facings bans from appearing on film or television in the country.
The bans are part a moral crackdown in Beijing, with officials saying that actors have "corrupt[ed] the social atmosphere" through their behaviour, according to Foreign Policy.
The State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television has ordered cinemas and TV networks to halt screenings of material featuring stars with "morally dubious" pasts.
More than 40 performing arts organisations in Beijing have also agreed not to employ actors with a history of drug use, according to Chinese website Netease.
The news follows the arrest of Jackie Chan's son, Jaycee, in September for allegedly smoking marijuana.

This year 12 films from Chinese movie makers were shown at the Berlin Film Festival, all dealing with various aspects of Chinese culture and history. Last year Chinese films were not among the stand outs; however this year Tsui Hark, Zhang Yimou, and Wang Quan’an all had films featured in the main program of the festival.
The Berlin Film Festival has had a long relationship with Asian cinema and film makers, especially with the Chinese movie industry. Some of the top film makers of this country first became recognized in the West thanks to the Berlin Film Festival, so it is especially fortunate that Chinese films have had a strong showing after last year’s letdown.

Paolo and Vittorio Taviani's Caesar Must Die Paolo Taviani, 80, and Vittorio Taviani, 82, were the big winners at the 2012 Berlin Film Festival. The Taviani brothers' documentary Cesare deve morire / Caesar Must Die, about a staging of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar in Rome's maximum-security prison Rebibbia — with the actual inmates playing the various roles, was the surprise winner of the Golden Bear at the 62nd Berlinale. And this thanks to the sublime words of Shakespeare,” Vittorio Taviani remarked. Through a translator, Paolo Taviani explained that "we chose Julius Caesar for one clear reason. We were working in a prison. That meant it was easy to get the message across with this play where actors are talking about freedom,...
