Mainland China, July 2021: Another day another online movie made its way to the massively popular video streaming platforms there to catch the roving eyes of the viewers looking for a quick fix. Produced by Henan Guanglan Culture and starring a bunch of unknown actors, at least outside of China anyway, Tencent Video's “Longmen Town Inn” or “Dragon Gate Town Inn” in Chinese, is one such production like many countless more.

Despite being nominated for a staggering nine awards at the 1983 Hong Kong Film Awards, “Nomad” ultimately went home empty-handed. The major nominations included “Best Picture,” “Best Director,” “Best Screenplay,” “Best Cinematography,” and “Best Actor” (Leslie Cheung). “Nomad” is one of the pioneering works that kickstarted the “Hong Kong New Wave,” which began around 1979 and reached its peak in the beginning of the 1980s.

The film follows the tumultuous lives of four Hong Kong youths. Leslie Cheung plays Louis, a shy bourgeois who spends his days listening to recordings of his deceased mother, accompanied by his cousin Kathy (Pat Ha). Their fates intertwine with that of Pong (Kent Tong), whom Kathy ends up falling in love with, and Tomato (Cecilia Yip), Louis' future girlfriend. The film's Chinese title, literally translated as “youth in flames” or “flaming youth,” encapsulates the essence of the work. Patrick Tam...

The Shanghai International Film Festival, China’s most prestigious movie industry event, kicks off its 30th-anniversary edition Friday night. It will be the first version of the festival that’s easily accessible to the global film community since 2019, after the past three editions were either canceled or rendered difficult to attend by strict Covid-19 travel restrictions at the time.
This year, film stars from at home and afar will descend on China’s commercial capital to celebrate the ongoing comeback of China’s movie business. Jason Statham will lend some Hollywood star power to the proceedings when he walks the red carpet for the festival’s opening ceremony Friday night in promotion of his upcoming Warner Bros. blockbuster sequel, Meg 2: The Trench, which opens Aug. 4 and co-stars Chinese leading man Wu Jing. Considering that it took up to five directors to finish filming the first “Swordsman” after King Hu left the project, it was indeed a miracle that it turned out to be a success and a trend setter for the many new wave wuxia movies to follow. This visually arresting sequel, again produced by Tsui Hark but now directed by Ching Siu Tung, it’s a different beast all together. However, the theme of swordsmen retiring from the jianghu (martial world) and live a peaceful life is still the main focus. The film went on to win William Cheung Suk Ping and Yu Ka On the Best Costume and Makeup Design award at the 12th Hong Kong Film Awards in 1993.

A project by producer Tsui Hark and director King Hu and a story taken from the wuxia novel “Xiao Ao Jiang Hu” which roughly translates as “Smiling Proudly in the Martial World” written by Jin Yong (Louis Cha). Anyhow, be it creative differences or sickness, Hu left the production and it was the ensemble of Ching Siu Tung, Raymond Lee, Tsui Hark himself and Ann Hui (uncredited) working together as acting directors to finish the job. However, as seen in the opening credits, Hu was the only one listed as the original director nonetheless.

The title “Carry on Hotel” to an Englishman like myself brings back memories of the classic film series of the same name. These “Carry On” films were full of toilet humour and sexual innuendos and were considered icons of the British Film Industry. Hong Kong cinema equally has a frequent confrontation with the idea of taste; again toilet humour and obsession with sex are frequent features. Having experienced both of these styles over the years it would be inevitable that my interest would be piqued. So with curiosity (and a certain amount of trepidation) I decided to sit down and watch this and see if it lived up (or down) to my expectations.

A massive star in his native Taiwan, actor Charlie Chin was mostly known for his roles in romantic comedies that played an advantage on his good looks and natural acting talent. To see him step outside those roles in something like this, a dark and gritty amoral action/thriller that predates the work of action master John Woo by several years, helps to make Terry Tong’s obscure film “Coolie Killer” an underrated gem.
After refusing to carry out a hit, veteran assassin Ko Tut-fa (Charlie Chin) finds him and the rest of his team targeted by a mysterious group of killers that leave him as the sole survivor from the gang. Tracing the activities back to a former boss of his in the local Triad gang, he sets out to get back at him for what he suspects is a setup in a power struggle, but...

Director Jun Li hopes his new film, “Drifting”, which made its Asian premiere at the 45th Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF45) tonight, can spotlight Hong Kong’s homeless people for more public attention.
Joining Li at a star-studded gala screening at Hong Kong Cultural Centre was the ensemble cast, including Loletta Lee, Cecilia Choi, Chu Pak-hong, Baby Bo, Will Or, and Cecilia Yip in a special appearance. Selected for the International Film Festival Rotterdam’s Big Screen Competition earlier this year, “Drifting” is the young filmmaker’s second feature following “Tracey”, his critically-acclaimed debut in 2018.
Based on a true story, “Drifting” recounts how an ex-convict, played by Francis Ng, and his fellow drifters take their fight to court after the authorities had raided their makeshift homes and disposed of their belongings.

"People can sometimes be very weak. But we hope to see strong people." Film Movement has released a new trailer for the 4K restoration of the beloved Hong Kong film Center Stage, made by filmmaker Stanley Kwan. It originally debuted in 1991, but didn't play at film festivals until 1992 when it showed at the Berlin Film Festival (where Cheung won Best Actress); it didn't even open in the US until 1994. The film is a biopic telling the story of 1930's Chinese actress Lingyu Ruan, played by the very talented Maggie Cheung. As The Film Stage explains: "Lingyu, who committed suicide at the age of 24 in 1935 after a tumultuous private life that was frequent fodder for the vicious Shanghai tabloids—and began to mirror the melodramas that brought her fame." The film's cast includes Han Chin, Tony Leung, Carina Lau, Waise Lee, Lily Li, Lawrence Ng, and Cecilia Yip. As always, discovering...

The story of a middle-aged man that remained paralysed after an accident at a construction site and his new Filipino helper can be pretty much summed-up into a paraphrase on Descartes’ most famous quote, “I dream, therefore I am.”
“Still Human” is screening at Five Flavours Asian Film Festival
Winner of the 3rd First Film Initiative (Higher Education Institution Group), „Still Human“ written and directed by Oliver Chan Siu Kuen is yet another of the Hong Kong films that demonstrate not only the interest to remind of forgotten or invisible people of the region, but also the skill to do so without excessive drama and emotional blackmail. It is especially admirable when one takes into account that the premise of “Still Human” just invites for a slide into cheesy melodrama pond.
Leung Cheong-Wing (Anthony Wong) is a middle-aged man who, due to an accident, is now paralyzed from the chest down.

Wai Ka-fai is no stranger to Hong Kong cinema and is best known for his collaboration with Johnnie To. Together they formed the very successful Milkyway Image independent film studio producing films like “Needing You”, “Fulltime Killer”, “Mad Detective” and so on. However, “Peace Hotel” is his first as a film director.
After making “Peace Hotel”, Chow Yun-fat said goodbye to Hong Kong and headed west to Hollywood. He also shares writing credits with director Wai Ka-fai whereas John Woo is credited as the producer. So there is a bit of film history associated with this film, interestingly, the Chinese title translates it as “Peace Restaurant” rather than “Peace Hotel”.
Chow Yun-fat plays a man with no name, but everyone knows him as ‘King of Killers’. Throughout the beautifully shot opening, we learn that his wife is killed and he’s killing off bandits from floor to...

In 1992, mega-producer Tsui Hark and action choreographer-director Ching Siu-tung pulled an Empire Strikes Back on Hong Kong moviegoers with The Swordsman II, the dark, denser, superior sequel to the saga started in 1990. The difference was The Swordsman II’s entirely new cast: Out were Sam Hui, Cecilia Yip and Sharla Cheung, in were rising stars Jet Li, Rosamund Kwan, Michelle Reis and Tsui muse Brigitte Lin, capping a string of gender non-binary performances ahead of her too-early retirement. Rivaled only by Chungking Express’ The Woman in the Blonde Wig as Lin’s most iconic role, her turn as martial arts...

This was my first viewing of Hong Kong 1941, starring the brilliant Chow Yun fat in a great movie about Friendship, Loyalty and struggle to over come the invasion of the Japanese soldiers. This is a great movie from start to finish, it had me engaged not only with the brutal story, but every character gives 100% and Director Leong Po Chih does a terrific job.
The movie starts with the British soldiers, women and children leaving Hong Kong as anytime the Japanese will invade and they realize they are to strong at the time, so leave for Australia. The movie is centered around three friends Chow Yun Fat, Alex Man and Cecilia Yp who build a friendship to one day escape Hong Kong and head to the “Gold Mountain” for a better life.

This Saturday, May 29th, the Asian Institute at the University of Toronto and Ultra8 Pictures are hosting a free double bill screening of two classic Hong Kong supernatural comedies on 35mm as part of Asian Heritage Month. Dubbed "Restless Spirits: Ronnie Yu and Ringo Lam's 1980s Ghost Comedies", the films are coming from Tiff Programmer and ActionFest Director Colin Geddes' recent donation of vintage 35mm prints to the University of Toronto that he rescued from closed down Chinatown cinemas and they are in pretty great condition considering their age and the wear and tear of living in cinema basements. This is a rare opportunity to see these films on... well... film.
Taking place at Innis Town Hall, a block south of Bloor on St. George at 2 Sussex Avenue, the screening kicks off this Saturday at 4pm with Ringo Lam's debut film (straight out of York University) Esprit...
