Her maternal grandmother and her mother pushed her to become an actress. She enrolled in Barnard College at 16, and trained at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre, where her teachers included Martha Graham and Sanford Meisner. She had small roles on television and in summer stock theater.
