The remake of Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds is still very much an active project...
To answer your question: no, nothing's sacred.
There's not a great number of people who get to the end of Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds and reckon that it needs a fresh approach. But the team at Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes appear to be on that very short list.
For some time now, there's been talk of a remake of The Birds, but after hearing nothing for a while, we thought the idea had been quietly dropped. Yet we thought wrong. News now reaches us that the new The Birds has found a director, and very much remains an active project.
Dutch director Diederik Van Rooijen is the man chosen to take on directing duties. It'll mark his English language feature debut, having enjoyed success in Holland with films such as Taped.

By now, theatergoers probably have watched a scene in "Soul Surfer" where Dennis Quaid's Tom Hamilton reads the Holy Bible next to his bed-ridden child, AnnaSophia Robb's Bethany. The particular scene was not what the producers intended to display in raw at the first place.
Tom, whose real-life story is brought on screen in the April 8-released film, said the words "Holy Bible" were digitally removed from the book cover when he was shown the early version of the movie. David Zelon who is an executive at Mandalay Pictures wanted to tone down the Christianity of the film in order to make it appeal to non-Christian audience.
A devoted Catholic, Tom refused to have the words edited out. In the next screening, Tom and his family were pleased with the final version. "I could see the words bright and clear," he said as quoted by THR. "I looked at my wife and whispered,...

Friends, execs, agents: Mandalay Pictures wants you to lend it your ears.
The company has picked up the film rights to "Julius," a modern re-imagining of Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar" from Oni Press. F. Gary Gray is attached to direct.
The graphic novel, written by Antony Johnston and illustrated by Brett Weldele, follows Julius, a London crime king who is beloved like royalty by the public. His generals, however, conspire against him.
Mandalay will produce. Eric Gitter of Closed on Mondays Entertainment, the producing arm of Oni Press, also will produce, and Oni's Peter Schwerin and Joe Nozemack will executive produce.
Mandalay president Cathy Schulman and exec vps David Zelon and Jonathan Krauss will oversee for Mandalay.
Oni has been on a tear in the past year, setting up numerous projects around town. It is ramping up production on its first project, "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World," which has Edgar Wright directing and Michael Cera starring.
Mandalay is developing a remake of "The Birds" with Platinum Dunes, Martin Campbell and Naomi Watts as well as Focus Features' "The Piano Tuner" with writer-director Werner Herzog.
Gray, repped by Wma and Management 360, directed "The Italian Job" and "The Negotiator."...

NEW YORK -- Summit Entertainment has nabbed Bear Aderhold and Tom Sullivan's broadly comic spec script Mental and has committed Mandalay Pictures to produce the feature.
Mental follows an orderly who is promised part of a $3 million inheritance from a mentally disturbed patient in his care -- but only if they can break out of an asylum and get to court to collect the loot. On the way from the Pasadena institution to Santa Monica, the seemingly stable patient begins to reveal personality disorders that make for a disastrous road trip.
Summitt president of production Erik Feig and vp production Jean Song are overseeing the project for the studio.
"We were excited to read (the) terrific comic two-hander and to find a second picture to make with our friends at Summit," Mandalay president Cathy Schulman said. Her company also is producing the Summit release Get Some. Mandalay executive vp David Zelon is on location in Orlando overseeing the shoot.
