With no official film market and a more laid-back attitude than Cannes, Berlin or Toronto, Venice has never been the go-to festival for movie deals.
But opportunistic buyers could spot a bargain this year, as many of the hottest titles arrive at the Lido without major distribution in place.
Just ahead of Venice, Sideshow and Janus Films picked up domestic rights to Ryûsuke Hamaguchi’s Drive My Car follow-up Evil Does Not Exist, and Mubi snatched up Sophia Coppola’s Priscilla, an A24 release in the U.S., for several markets, including the U.K., Germany, Latin America and Turkey.
Here are some of the other prime targets for dealmakers in the 2023 Venice Film Festival lineup.

Over the course of five seasons, HBO's "Boardwalk Empire" interwove the fictional plot lines of a Prohibition-set crime drama with figures and events from real American history. Though it was based on a non-fiction book, "Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City," series creator Terence Winter took a page from the show's premium channel cousin "Deadwood" about what not to do in that he wanted to keep it from being easily spoiled by reading up on the history behind it. Steve Buscemi's antihero, Nucky Thompson, is only loosely based on politician and gangster Enoch L. Johnson, while other characters such as Nucky's protégé, Jimmy Darmody (Michael Pitt), were invented out of whole cloth or, at best, nominally inspired by real people.
Winter enlisted the aid of researchers like Edward McGinty to keep "Boardwalk Empire" historically accurate, even as it went about dramatizing situations that never happened.

Preacher is not for everyone. If the cheesily perfect outer space-faring opening minutes of the show’s premiere season weren’t warning enough, the next ten hours eventually amassed an impressive assortment of spontaneous combustion, an Irish vampire with a machine gun for a mouth, mind-control super powers, immortal angels, a supernatural telephone, a guy appropriately named Arseface, and – eventually, confoundingly – the quest for God.
It was – is – a lot to take in. Preacher season 2 has no room for your confusion; the opening two hours of the new season are manic and exhausting in the absolute best sense, because they feel like they have a focused, meaningful purpose. It’s like the show is just getting started, with a road trip plotline that has the figurehead of all existence in its sights, and a pure evil cowboy from hell in its rear-view mirror.

Preacher is one of my favorite series currently running on TV and it's going to be released on Blu-ray and DVD October 4.
The first season takes a while to get going, mostly because of character development but it really gets going. Lots of gore and is damned hilarious in spots. Very interesting characters as well. Can't wait for season 2. Read more about the upcoming release below.

Rejoice in the glory of Christ/Satan/[Insert Deity Here], Preacher fans: AMC has renewed the popular supernatural horror series for an expanded 13-episode second season (as opposed to Season 1's 10-episode order). Based on the cult comic book series by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, Preacher centers on a faith-challenged Texas preacher named Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper) who is imbued with the power to make other people do anything he commands when he's possessed by the spirit of a mysterious entity named Genesis. Season 1 has brought in solid ratings for the network with an average of 3.3 million viewers an episode, including 1.9 million in the highly-coveted Adults 25-54 demo (according to AMC, this makes it the second most-watched new series on cable this year). This Thursday, the network is airing a "catch-up/DVR marathon" of the first five episodes of Season 1 beginning at 9pm, with the sixth episode slated to air in the show's regular Sunday 9pm timeslot.

AMC has debuted (via Hitfix) a new sneak peek from this Sunday’s episode of Preacher, titled “Monster Swamp.” In it, Cassidy (Joe Gilgun) meets with Fiore (Tom Brooke) and DeBlanc (Anatol Yusef) in an effort to discover more about the mysterious entity that’s inhabiting his pal Jesse (Dominic Cooper).
During their first couple of encounters, ol’ Cass actually “killed” the cowboy hat-wearing duo – so he obviously knows there’s something out of the ordinary about them. The vampire’s first guess was that they were clones, but during the last episode Fiore admitted that they were in fact from heaven – in other words, they’re angels.
Cassidy seems to be striking a deal with the pair in this clip, but it’s hard to imagine he’d betray Jesse outright and more than likely has a few tricks up his sleeve. Of course, that doesn’t mean he...

Jesse Custard (Dominic Cooper) is possessed by something with great power. This is a problem. Or a blessing. Depends on how you look at it really. But regardless, it’s definitely a miracle. And the problem with this particular miracle is it's more stubborn than barnacles on a ship’s hull. But the angels DeBlanc (Anatol Yusef) and Fiore (Tom Brooke) have a plan. From their perspective, it’s a good plan. It ends with the thing inside Jesse no longer inside of him. Thankfully the Preacher has Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) in his corner. Kind of. Mostly. Right up until the end. But hey, the broker has to get their cut of the deal, right? In the HitFix exclusive clip above (and below), get a kick out of two angels and a vampire negotiating about a human. Preacher airs this Sunday at 9/8c on AMC.

Preacher introduces two of the funniest characters on TV in this week's deftly balanced episode, The Possibilities...
This review contains spoilers.
1.3 The Possibilities
Preacher is a world full of interesting, weird characters. There's not a person on the show who isn't messed up in some way or another, from the stars all the way down to the one-off characters. Preacher has one of the deepest benches of interesting characters that you'll find on TV, and one of the highlights of this particular episode is the two mysterious men who are trying to recover the parasite from within Jesse Custer. Fiore and DeBlanc are two of the funniest characters on TV, and any episode that features them hanging out with Cassidy is going to be a funny one indeed.
Every moment with Tom Brooke and Anatol Yusef on screen is a delight, and the angels get to have a couple of fun scenes this week. Their first scene is squaring off with Sheriff Root, which is just a wonderful bit of comedy. Root is questioning, quite rightly, why the two men are there, and why they aren't seeking help from the local authorities if they are the government. The fact that Fiore and DeBlanc didn't actually have a cover story set up before Root shows up is clear from the very beginning, as the two contradict one another or talk over one another with every question before DeBlanc asserts himself and takes over the conversation. Root undercuts the comedy with a pretty horrible story about child abuse and murder (why wouldn't he?) but when Fiore and DeBlanc uncover their cache of weapons, it only underscores just how little attention the two angels actually pay to human suffering; they just wanted Hugo to leave so they could get into their combat gear and go after Genesis.
Of course, since it's Fiore and DeBlanc, they fail miserably. Armed with heavy weapons and bullet-proof vests and helmets, the two make their walk towards Jesse's church only to be run down by Cassidy driving the church van; Scott Winant makes sure this scene comes out of nowhere, and we get a build-up for a huge payoff laugh. Two more bodies to dispose of. At least, until, the two men show up again while Cassidy is looking for garbage bags to dispose of the bodies he'd left outside. Cassidy's 'kill first, ask questions never' paranoia works out in his favour, usually, but it doesn't help the angels any. However, the scenes are very funny, and Brook and Yusef deserve all the screen time they get, because their deadpan comedy is very much needed as the rest of the episode gets a little bit heavier.
That's one of the interesting tonal dilemmas that Preacher has. Just what kind of show is it? Is it a supernatural drama? Certainly, Jesse Custer seems to be wrestling with his tremendous power. Is it a conspiracy drama? Well, Danni (Julie Dretzin) wasn't dropping off information to a man at a snuff film convention just for fun. There must be some power behind the appearance of the angels, as well. Cassidy and Jesse could easily fill out the lead roles in a buddy comedy, while Tulip seems determined to turn every episode into a crime caper. It's funny, but it's also very dark, usually at the same time. There's some serious philosophical discussions, but also plenty of pop culture references.
Chris Kelly, who wrote tonight's episode, gets some credit for being able to work that delicate balance. I mean, there's an implied snuff film, and one of the characters is abusing both his wife and son, and yet the show packs laughs in wherever possible. Every horrible thing is counterbalanced by some comedy, be it dark like the many deaths of Fiore and DeBlanc or light like Cassidy wandering around in a poncho and giant straw hat to hide from the sun. There's just enough lightness to counterbalance the terrible things that are going on just below the surface. I mean, in one small town you've got a paedophile, a failed suicide, at least one wife-beater, and that's not even going into the mysterious stranger watching snuff films or the fact that Odin Quincannon has to be some kind of monster given he's being played by Jackie Earle Haley.
Will the show be able to keep up that deft balance between light and dark? I don't know, but I can certainly appreciate the great pains they're taking to stay true to the source material while making it slightly more palatable for cable television purposes. Those are the big questions for the show as a viable television entity. Can it keep Preacher fans happy without running afoul of television marketing executives? Can the show delve into dark places or philosophically difficult areas without alienating viewers? So far so good, but if this show doesn't get any protest think-pieces written about it before the end of the season, I think it's not doing its job.

Ahead of its premiere on Sunday, June 12th, the next episode of AMC’s Preacher, titled “The Possibilities”, is teased in new photos and preview videos.
““Preacher,” which is based on Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s popular ‘90’s comic book franchise of the same name, is a Sony Pictures Television and AMC Studios co-production. The ten-episode season was developed for television by executive producers Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg (This Is the End, Superbad, Neighbors) and executive producer and showrunner Sam Catlin (“Breaking Bad”).
“Preacher” is a supernatural, twisted and darkly comedic drama that follows a West Texas preacher named Jesse Custer, who is inhabited by a mysterious entity that causes him to develop a highly unusual power. Jesse, his badass ex-girlfriend Tulip and an Irish vagabond named Cassidy come together and when they do, they are thrust into a crazy world populated by a cast of characters from Heaven,...

We may just be in the Golden Age of television, ladies and gentlemen. I know people have said that for years, but as someone who mostly sticks to film and only occasionally goes in on a TV show, it takes a lot for me to notice things on the small screen. A new exception to that is Preacher, which has just launched on AMC and is looking like a special program. It’s unlike anything else on TV right now, which I can always appreciate. It’s gory, humorous, sad, and serious, all in equal measure, which I really respond to. In short, I think we have a show to really pay attention to as we head into the summer. The show is an adaptation of the cult comic book of the same name by Garth Ennis. The premise is ridiculous, I grant you that, as it follows a preacher...

EW and IGN have debuted a couple of new clips from this Sunday's episode of Preacher. The first sees Fiore (Tom Brooke) and DeBlanc (Anatol Yusef) perform a bizarre ritual on a sleeping Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper). It's not completely clear what they hope to accomplish, but it looks like they're trying to lure the infant entity known as Genesis out of Custer with a lullaby. The next clip features Tulip (Ruth Negga) making friends at a poker game. For the chuckling fella behind her's sake, let's hope she's in a good mood. Oh, and something that's sure to get you Funko Pop! fans excited: Based on the popular, cult comic book franchise of the same name, Preacher” is a supernatural, twisted and darkly comedic drama that follows a West Texas preacher named Jesse Custer, who is inhabited by a mysterious entity that causes him to develop a highly unusual power.

Preacher's hugely impressive visuals do the comic book justice while paying homage to filmmaker John Ford this week...
This review contains spoilers.
1.2 See
One of the strongest things about comic books as a medium isn't the writing, it's the art. Comic book writing, even at its best, is fairly limited; there's only so much space in a speech bubble and only so much patience for the written word in a funny book. The art ends up being what tells the story, barring the occasional outlier like Neil Gaiman. This is true even in Preacher, the comic book source material for the surprise hit AMC TV series. There are words, and a lot of words, but thus far the big star hasn't been a monologue or a conversation, but incredibly impressive visuals.

Welcome to Preacher, boys and girls. I published a review of the early episodes last week, and I have specific thoughts on the premiere coming up just as soon as I want you to feel like you smell... "Jesus, what kind of preacher are you?" -Cassidy AMC screened the Preacher pilot for critics back at the January press tour. Critic conversations after a mass screening are always fun, but this one was especially interested, because there was a clear divide in the room between those who knew the comics and those who didn't, which can be more or less summed up like this: Comics reader critic: "That was almost nothing like the comic, but I think I liked it?" Non-reader critic: "I think I liked it, but I have no idea what the hell I just saw." Though I belong to the former group, my goal is to treat Preacher...

AMC has released the first four and a half minutes of their upcoming new series Preacher, which is based on the comic book by writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon. We live in an age of miracles when it comes to allegedly unadaptable books actually being adapted. For years, fantasy fans assumed no one could do right by George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire books, but then Game of Thrones became a phenomenon for readers and non-readers alike. Diana Gabaldon's Outlander books seemed too larded with historical detail (and the occasional extremely graphic rape scene) to seem plausible as a TV show, but the Starz version has won over most of her audience. Now comes AMC's Preacher, based on an acclaimed '90s comic book series, by writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon, whose apparent barriers to adaptation are so numerous and daunting that they make A Song of Ice and Fire look like Bridget Jones' Diary. The comic is deeply offensive on both spiritual and aesthetic levels — its recurring cast includes both...

Even though we’ve had quite a few teasers and promos for AMC’s adaptation of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s controversial comic series, Preacher, none of them have really given us any proper insight into the story, or what we can expect from the characters. Well, that all changes today with this revealing 5-minute featurette.
In addition to interviews with showrunners Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, and cast members Dominic Cooper (Jesse Custer), Joseph Gilgun (Cassidy) and Ruth Negga (Tulip O’Hare), we also get to see the characters interact and actually converse for the first time.

This highlights some key changes from the source material – including the fact that in this adaptation, Tulip and Jesse are childhood friends that grew up together in Anneville. Plus, we also get our first glimpse of the show’s supernatural element, as Jesse is possessed by the entity known as Genesis.

We’re little over a fortnight out from the series premiere of AMC’s Preacher series, and a new promo has surfaced today heralding the arrival of DC Vertigo’s jet-black drama to the small-screen.
Set to make its bow on May 22, it is Dominic Cooper that will soon be fighting the good fight as Jesse Custer, a chain-smoking exorcist ready to deal with the best and worst that Heaven, Hell and everything else in between throws at him. In many ways, the imminent live-action rendition of Preacher is the brainchild of Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and showrunner Sam Catlin, who helped produce the series during its formative years.
But fans know Custer as the gruff protagonist that headlined Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s comic series, and will surely be pleased to see Glenn Fabry’s artwork being honored in the show’s most recent posters, seen below.

If there’s any theme that defined ex-Reverend Jesse Custer’s (Dominic Cooper) journey through the 75 issues of Preacher, it’s his aversion to authority (to put it mildly). Thankfully, the Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen-produced AMC series, although deviating somewhat from its source material, looks like it will still result in lots of run-ins with the cops.
For proof of this, simply take a look at the newly released photos above. In the first shot, the one-time preacher finds himself in a tense-looking situation with Sheriff Hugo Root (W. Earl Brown) – the father of Arseface (Ian Colletti).
Troubles with traditional law enforcement are the least of Custer’s concerns though, as he’ll also face off against the powers-that-be from Heaven. As we see in the other photo, there’s a Western-clad variation of the angelic sect known as the Adelphi. Agents Fiore (Tom Brooke...

If you've never read Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's Preacher be forewarned - Jesse Custer has issues with authority, particularly law enforcement (both earthly and otherworldly). Though things appear calm in the still below with Sheriff Root,it's likely that things to get pretty tense in the next shot. We also have a new still showcasing Fiore (Tom Brooke), DeBlanc (Anatol Yusef) , two Adelphi agents sent to Earth to retrieve Genesis. “Preacher” is a supernatural, twisted and darkly comedic drama that follows a West Texas preacher named Jesse Custer, who is inhabited by a mysterious entity that causes him to develop a highly unusual power. Jesse, his badass ex-girlfriend Tulip and an Irish vagabond named Cassidy come together and when they do, they are thrust into a crazy world populated by a cast of characters from Heaven, Hell and everywhere in between. The series stars Dominic Cooper as Jesse Custer,...

I read Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's comic series Preacher in college and became a huge fan, so I'm very curious to see how Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Sam Catlin (Breaking Bad) adapt it for AMC on the small screen. Thankfully fans don't have much longer to wait until we get to see the premiere, and now the network has released a big batch of new photos of the actors in costume to tide us over until next month. Check them out below, courtesy of IGN, USA Today, ComicBook, and EW.
Yahoo also added a couple of pics, along with a quick breakdown of all of the characters in that header image above (from left to right):
Hugo Root (W. Earl Brown): Root’s the nasty local sheriff who, in the comics, has a life-changing encounter with Jesse Custer, leading Root to a shocking act of self-violence.

Preacher is a new series on AMC that you won’t want to miss! I’ve already seen the first episode, and I was blown away by how good and entertaining it was. If you’re a fan of the comic it is based on, you’re gonna love the hell out of this series. It does everything right. You can read our review of the pilot episode here.
The clip is called “Meet Tulip,” and it features a thrilling action-packed sequence in which Ruth Negga as Tulip is attacked while driving on the highway and then through a corn field. As you’ll see, Tulip knows how to handle herself and kick some ass when she needs to.

AMC may have another Walking Dead-sized hit on its hands with graphic novel adaptation Preacher – or at least that was the impression out of SXSW, where the pilot screened to rapturous praise.
The series isn’t premiering until May, but stars Dominic Cooper and Ruth Negga were among those in attendance at a WonderCon panel for the show, where AMC unveiled the striking, unnerving first look at Ian Colletti’s take on Eugene “Arseface” Root, one of the comic’s most distinctive figures.
In the original comic, created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon in 1995, Eugene was a young boy whose failed suicide attempt left him with a horrifically disfigured face. Despite his unfortunate circumstances, the boy retained a sunny, kind disposition, and idolized local preacher Jesse Custer (Cooper), though a past transgression left him convinced that God had turned against him.
As the below image makes clear, showrunner...
