The Psycho franchise is a mysterious beast, with two sequels, a prequel and a failed television pilot that aired as a television movie (Bates Motel, 1987), and Universal Television has announced a deal with A&E to develop a new series exploring the roots of Robert Bloch’s favorite son.
The Hollywood Reporter shares the following details: “The series would offer an understanding into how Norman Bates’ psyche developed and would tell the back story of the film’s killer, learning of how his mother, Norma, and her lover damaged him, transforming him into serial-killing motel owner.“
The initial script is from Anthony Cipriano.

And the news from the Television Critics Association’s Winter Press Tour just keeps coming. During its presentation, A&E announced that it is in the early stages of developing a prequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s famous-for-the-shower-scene-and-creepy-mother-issues thriller Psycho entitled Bates Motel, from Universal TV and writer Anthony Cipriano.
Deadline reports that the series is to center around Norman Bates from his childhood through his teen years, and the horrible treatment he receives from his mother Norma and her lover. Which is meant to explain a lot.
[The Shakedown]
It won’t be the first time a network has tried to make a series out of one of the more famous stops on the Universal Studios tour. I’m thinking it will need to have more than a creepy kid and an abusive mom to get people to tune in, but hopefully there will be more by the time it gets to a pilot.

Ever wondered how Norman Bates went from mild-mannered motel proprietor to serial killer? You’ll get your chance to uncover the man behind the knife when A&E’s new TV series “Bates Motel” opens on the cable network. If, that is, the net decides to pick it up. According to the trades, “Bates Motel” (there was already a TV movie of the same name, exploring the same character in the ’80s) would “offer an understanding into how Norman Bates’ psyche developed and would tell the back story of the film’s killer, learning of how his mother, Norma, and her lover damaged him, transforming him into serial-killing motel owner.” Oh, single moms and your boyfriends. When will you ever learn? Maybe A&E can get together with NBC and join “Bates Motel” with NBC’s “Hannibal”, the TV show about a young Hannibal the Cannibal of “Silence of the Lambs” fame.

A&E is developing "Bates Motel", a prequel series based on the famed hotel featured in Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" says The Live Feed.
The series would offer insight into how Norman Bates' psyche developed and would tell the back story of his relationship with his mother Norma and her lover, eventually transforming him into a serial-killing motel owner. Anthony Cipriano penned the script.
NBC previously tried a similar spin-off film back in 1987 with a TV movie of the same name. The 1990 cable TV movie "Psycho IV: The Beginning" explored just such a storyline with Henry Thomas playing a young Norman Bates and Olivia Hussey as his mother Norma.
A&E is also developing a remake of the Danish series "Those Who Kill" about a female police detective and profiler who hunts serial killers.

After hearing about AMC's Goodfellas TV series earlier this week, we can now report that another classic film will soon be receiving the television treatment: none other than Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. This time around it's A&E that will develop the new show, titled Bates Motel, which will act as a prequel to the Hitchcock film. It will chronicle the development of Norman Bates' psyche and how the treatment he received from his mother and her lover warped him into a killer. Anthony Cipriano (12 and Holding) penned the script, but, as of yet, no director or actors have been signed. While A&E is known mainly for unscripted material like Intervention and Hoarders, Bates Motel would represent the network's growing attempts at scripted shows like The Glades and Breakout Kings. While the idea of exploring Norman Bates' past may sound like an interesting idea on paper, I've found that...

If you ever wondered just what happened to make Norman Bates into the lady-slashing, cross-dressing, maternal skeleton maintaining bag of weirdness he is in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, then you might just get an answer thanks to Us TV network A&E.Executives from Universal Television announced at the Television Critics Association winter tour on Friday that they’d kicked off early development on the series, which aims to peek into Bates’ psyche and see how his skewed worldview came to be. You know, because Hitchcock did such a bad job by not explaining every little detail. The show – assuming it actually gets picked up, which is not guaranteed just yet – will follow the younger Bates and his issues with mum Norma and her lover, detailing just how they damaged him. A TV show about child abuse and psychopaths! How delightful. It has a script by Anthony Cipriano and, if given the go-ahead,...

Is the big 2012 trend going to be TV series that act as prequels to film classics? We've already heard that AMC is the likely home [1] for a Goodfellas TV series, which has been said to be a prequel to Martin Scorsese's film. There is also Hannibal, a show that explores the early relationship [2] between detective Will Graham and killer Hannibal Lecter. Now A&E is developing Bates Motel, a series that would serve as a prequel to Alfred Hitchcock's classic 1960 film Psycho. Because we need to know all about how Norman Bates got to be crazy, right? Psycho IV: The Beginning didn't cover that angle well enough. THR [3] says that Bates Motel will "offer an understanding into how Norman Bates' psyche developed and would tell the back story of the film's killer, learning of how his mother, Norma, and her lover damaged him, transforming him into serial-killing motel owner.
