Animayo Gran Canaria’s top two winners this year, one from Iran, another Central American, touch on the same theme that is encapsulated in what a character says in Guatemalan Pablo León’s 2D animated short, “Remember Us,” winner of the festival’s best short film of Spanish-Speaking Nationality – Animation with Ñ.
“You fight your wars twice, first in the battlefield, then in your memory,” says the journalist in “Remember Us” who chronicles three stories of the civil war that tore El Salvador apart for 12 years.
“In the Shadow of the Cypress,” winner of Animayo’s Best International Short Film prize, centers on a war veteran struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder (Ptsd) who takes out his pent-up rage on his daughter until something unexpected washes up on the beach before their house.

Short subjects willing to tackle tough subjects made the final cut with the Academy this year. That means audiences buying tickets to the “2024 Oscar Nominated Short Films: Animation” program should brace for poetic treatments of uncomfortable topics, ranging from incest to the Holocaust. Since the toon shorts tend to run short (just an hour to get through the noms), ShortsTV’s theatrical roster includes two additional “highly commended” titles, ending on a musical up note with “The Little Mermaid” co-director John Musker’s “I’m Hip.”
Hailing from Iran, Yegane Moghaddam’s “Our Uniform” finds a fitting style for a sartorial commentary: Using clothing as her canvas, the young director recalls how it felt to grow up in a country where girls were required to wear the hijab, or headscarf. She creatively experiments with various techniques, manipulating garments to suggest motion and drawing directly onto different fabrics (as when...

Directors Notes first caught wind of Yegane Moghaddam’s impressively constructed animated short Our Uniform back at Annecy last year. Amongst a plethora of compelling shorts, Moghaddam’s film stood out to us due to its visual tactility and thematic political relevance. Its story follows a young Iranian woman who reveals anecdotes surrounding her experiences at school and the gendered effects of wearing a mandatory hijab. These anecdotes are brought to life via a combination of stop motion of the school uniform and overlayed 2D animation that is rendered upon its surface. It’s such a compelling piece of filmmaking and it was of no surprise to us when it became nominated for an Oscar. With the Academy Awards ceremony now just around the corner, Dn joins Moghaddam for a discussion on her film below, talking over its beginnings as a series of real-life schoolgirl stories, her surprise at its international success,...

There exist three Oscar categories where it’s possible to watch all nominated films in one shot – that’s shorts, Animated, Live Action and Documentary. Packaged into three feature length films presented by ShortsTV, the Oscar Nominated Short Films open in theaters today for a four-week run on about 650 screens in the U.S. and Canada.
It’s 19-year tradition popular with audiences and theaters. Each film is also “an event. Then you can go argue about who you think should win,” says ShortsTV founder and CEO Carter Pilcher.
Theater owners can screen any or all of the three compilations however and whenever they want from a traditional run to a one-week marathon before the Academy Awards on March 10.
Pilcher says the animated bundle tends to do the best historically, although the 2023 short called My Year Of Dicks nudged out some of the family audiences that love animation, giving Live Action the win.

The State of the Race
The animated short Oscar nominees are all acclaimed indies that explore such heady themes as the Holocaust, war, gender restrictions, incest, and mortality. They hail from the U.S., France, Israel, and Iran and embrace CG, 2D, stop-motion, and mixed media.
The field is led by the timely “War Is Over! Inspired by the Music of John & Yoko”, about a chess game played across enemy lines of an alternative World War I, with the help of a heroic carrier pigeon. It was specifically inspired by John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s popular protest song,...

In Korea, the age of 19 marks the brink of adolescence – and in the same way, the Seoul Indie-Anifest seemed to be at a crossroads. Its programming this year looked both to the past and to the future. The special guest selection juxtaposed classic American animator Bill Plympton with a much younger contemporary, Jérémy Clapin; the film programming spilled over into more segments and now, web animation; and, in due turn, the festival turnout seemed greater in number than ever before.
Within the Korean selections of Independent Walk and First Flight, then, it is almost fitting to see the tension between past and future present in the awards. “Echo” (Kim Sangjoon), which follows a cannibalism case in the 1990s, took home the coveted “Star of Indie” Grand Prize this year. On the other hand, the speculative future of “How to get your man pregnant” (Noh Gyeong-mu) scooped the Prize for Independent Walk,...

Chiara Malta and Sébastien Laudenbach’s hand-painted marvel “Chicken for Linda!” took home dual honors at the Annecy Animation Festival on Saturday, scooping up the festival’s top prize, the Cristal Award for best feature, as well as the Gan Foundation award for distribution.
A bittersweet childhood tale that finds screwball humor in mourning and melancholy, the French-language film premiered to some acclaim out of Cannes’ Acid sidebar last month, and was picked up for North American distribution by Gkids while competing in Annecy.
“We wanted something both funny and affecting,” said co-director Chiara Malta. “The two elements were never in conflict, because we made the film for children, putting ourselves in their perspectives while adopting their language.”
“We wanted a [joyful mess],” added co-director Sébastien Laudenbach. “The film is sad and funny. It’s full of energy and emotion, and as a result, the graphic style is dynamic as well.”

Annecy International Animation Film Festival is the great bastion for the art of animation. Every year thousands flock to the alpine town in southeastern France to celebrate the best work being created by animators across the globe. From short films to features and everything in-between, Annecy is the place to be when it comes to catching the most impressive work currently being made in the imaginative and boundless art form. The short films on display, which we’ve covered for a number of years now, feature animators new and old, some making their first shorts after graduating film school, others 30 years into a career. This year’s films are true to that once more and, in particular, showcase a strong engagement with the creative breadth afforded by the form. Many of the shorts utilise a variety of techniques to bring their stories to life and the results are a joy to behold.

Spain’s foremost animation film festival, Animayo Gran Canaria, awarded Oscar-qualifying honors to animation shorts “Our Uniform” by Iran’s Yegane Moghaddam and “Amarradas” by Spain’s Carmen Córdoba as it reported a 29% jump in attendance, the biggest ever in its 18-year history.
Sixty animation shorts were in contention, selected out of 2,000 entries from more than 80 countries. Disney animation legend Andreas Deja, who presented the Spanish premiere of his 2D animation short, “Mushka,” presided over the international jury. He also held a Master Class on his 30 years at Disney, delivered a keynote address on the making of “Mushka” and led a three-hour drawing class on animated villains. “The students made me feel like a rock star,” he told Variety. “What better thing to hear than that the films I worked on still impact many people to this day,” he mused.
