In 1986, Nancy Lee Grahn and Lane Davies became fan favorites when they were paired together as Santa Barbara’s Julia Wainwright and Mason Capwell. They crossed paths again in 2002, when Grahn was toiling on General Hospital as Alexis Davis and Davies did a two-year stint as Cameron Lewis. On May 22, Davies returns as a new character, Fergus Byrne, who will face off with Alexis in court as she fights to get her law license reinstated. Here, the duo (who were also briefly linked in real-life in the ‘80s), discusses their on- and off-screen connection. Lane, how did your return for this General Hospital visit come about? Lane Davies: I know Nancy was wanting to work with me again. I ran into [former Gh head writer] Patrick Mulcahey at [Santa Barbara co-creator] Bridget Dobson’s funeral and we had a lovely lunch together and a lovely visit and I think it was just the synergy of all those...

Even though the majority of General Hospital viewers have noticed an improvement in the quality of the writing since the change in head writers earlier this year, that doesn't mean everyone liked what they saw. Though some of the audience's problems have disappeared, others have appeared in their place, raising more questions for the writers.
However, one thing everyone who has followed the soap long enough can agree on is that all the events that have taken place since the WGA strike of 2023 have brought more drama to the show. Too bad the most interesting parts of it are left behind the camera and not brought into the show's universe.
Why Did General Hospital Change the Head Writers?
For the show that has been on the air for more than 60 years, change is inevitable. Cast members come and go, characters grow old and die to be reborn, and others simply leave for other acting pursuits.

There has been another behind-the-scenes shake-up at General Hospital as co-head writer Patrick Mulcahey has been released from his position just a little over three months into the role. As first reported by The Buzz, Mulcahey has left his position just months after he and Elizabeth Korte were appointed as the show’s new head writers, replacing the team of Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor. Van Etten is now back on staff as a breakdown writer, while Korte serves as sole head writer. According to Soap Opera Digest, material crafted by the Mulcahey/Korte team will air through mid-summer. The changes are sure to impact storylines, casting, and what viewers will see at home. “There will be more news to share at a later date as to the composition of the new writing team,” a source told Soap Opera Digest. “Go ahead,” the fates told Grey’s Anatomy’s Owen and Teddy in Thursday’s episode. “Take a day off work. But don’t expect work to take a day off you. Muahaha.” Yup, the marrieds’ attempt to reconnect with one another and nature at the same time led straight to a young woman who had fallen into a rocky hole. If it makes them feel any better, things weren’t going much more smoothly back at Grey Sloan. (Are they ever?) Read on, and we’ll go over everything that happened in “Blood, Sweat and Tears.”

More change in the writers room at General Hospital.
Patrick Mulcahey — who was promoted in January to help fill the void left by co-head writers Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor — is no longer on the soap’s head-writing team, Deadline has confirmed.
Elizabeth Korte, who was upped alongside Mulcahey, will become the sole head writer for now. Korte has been a part of the Gh family since 1992.
Mulcahey is a longtime vet of daytime dramas, having started in the biz on Search For Tomorrow. He wrote for Loving, Santa Barbara, Guiding Light and The Bold and the Beautiful. He first started penning episodes for Gh in 1996.
Episodes that he crafted with Korte will air through mid-summer. A spokeswoman for the show declined comment.
In December, Gh took the prize for Outstanding Daytime Drama Series. It also racked up four Emmys in the acting categories and another in the Outstanding Directing Team category.
The Buzz first reported the news.

Nearly five months since being named co-head writer at “General Hospital,” Daytime Emmy Award winner Patrick Mulcahey is exiting the daytime drama series, Soap Opera Network has learned.
Elizabeth Korte, who became co-head writer alongside Mulcahey, will assume sole head writer duties following Mulcahey’s exit.
News of Mulcahey’s departure from “General Hospital” began circulating on social media Thursday afternoon following a report by The Buzz blog.
Having written for several soaps, including a previous tenure as a scriptwriter, breakdown writer and later associate head writer at “General Hospital” in the mid-to-late 90s, Mulcahey is probably best known for his time as a scriptwriter at “The Bold and the Beautiful.” He joined the show’s writing team in 2005 and would later become a story consultant at the series until he left the series in 2019.
In related news, Chris Van Etten is back as a breakdown writer at “General Hospital.

In January, there was a shakeup in the General Hospital writer’s room. The daytime soap opera replaced co-head writers Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor with new co-head writers Elizabeth Korte and Patrick Mulcahey. It looks like the change only lasted for four months and Mulcahey is out.
Replacing Mulcahey is Van Etten, who returns to the soap opera. Here is what you need to know.
Chris Van Etten Returns To General Hospital As Writer
It looks like Chris Van Etten is back at General Hospital again as part of the writing staff. The daytime soap made some changes in January and turned over the soap to a new writing team. However, that has changed and part of the old staff is back, as Van Etten’s name appeared in the credits for the first time since March. Chris is now listed as a “breakdown writer.”

While it was announced in January that “General Hospital” had replaced co-head writers Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor with new co-head writers Elizabeth Korte and Patrick Mulcahey, it looks like Van Etten at least is officially back in the writer’s room at the ABC daytime drama series.
During the Tuesday, May 14 episode, Van Etten’s name appeared in the credits for the first time since mid-March, this time as a breakdown writer.
Savvy fans had an inkling that Van Etten returned to the series when actress Alley Mills let the news slip during a video interview with journalist Michael Fairman in late April.
At the time, Mills was discussing her second consecutive Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Performance in a Daytime Drama Series for her portrayal of Heather Webber on the series. She won her first-ever Emmy in December 2023 for her work.

Marking her first day back on set since October, Cassandra James announced on Threads that she is returning to “General Hospital,” where she appears as Terry Randolph.
“First day on set since October. Almost half a year,” noted James on Meta-owned Threads, a rival platform to X (formerly Twitter), of how long since she was last at the Prospect Studios where the soap opera tapes. “Choosing gratitude because I know most actors have waited longer. Just imagine if the job you trained to do, that you’re good at and you love was consistently demonstrated to be ephemeral. That having a second job was not only normalized but systemically suggested. When you come home and stream our work on your TV, artists are wondering why we rarely feel valued enough to make our job a living.”

Jason Morgan returned to General Hospital on Monday, March 4, but Steve Burton says what fans saw onscreen wasn’t the original plan for his reprise. Burton first played Jason in Gh from 1991 to 2012, then again from 2017 to 2021. He was fired from the series for noncompliance with Covid-19 vaccine mandate on set, but he’s officially back as of March 4, 2024. The episode featured a bloody return for the beloved character, but Burton has revealed that there was a different story before a writers’ room change took place. Burton says it was an exciting change to the creative team behind the hit soap opera. “There was a head writer switch. So apparently there was a whole different story planned and then the head writer switch happened and then they kind of rebooted [the story],” Burton told Soap Opera Digest, referring to Elizabeth Korte’s promotion to co-head writer alongside newcomer Patrick Mulcahey. Burton said...

After spending just over twelve years as a writer at “The Bold and the Beautiful,” Michele Val Jean is putting away her keyboard when it comes to writing material surrounding the Forresters, the Logans and the Spencers, among other families and characters featured in the popular CBS daytime drama series.

General Hospital is getting a revamp behind the scenes.
It’s been a decade of the same on the ABC soap, with only a few minor changes to the writing and producing team.
Small increments didn’t seem to work for some of the long-time viewers, who have complained about the writing for some of the legacy characters and the rewriting of history to fit the narratives of their current favorites.
Soap Opera Digest broke the news about the head co-writers, Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor, being out at General Hospital.
The duo has worked together since 2019, but Chris has been in a co-writing position since 2017. He worked with Shelly Altman after her partner, Jean Passanante, retired. Dan joined Chris in 2019 when Shelly retired.

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.
Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...

I'm probably setting myself up for failure by doing this, but here's an exclusive first look at all the stuff I absolutely must accomplish in the next 12 months. * Give United States of Tara another try. Ditto It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. * Drink less water and more diet cola. * Get soap-writing God Patrick Mulcahey to pen a Santa Barbara reunion script purely for my enjoyment. * Convince Connie Britton to enter herself in the far-less-cluttered lead actress category at the Emmys. * Finally plan that trip to Belgium (for obvious reasons). * Spearhead a search party to track down my missing Bay Area buddies.
