Was teaching at a special education school in Greensboro, North Carolina, when he met soap opera writer Kay Alden who offered him to have a look at his writing work. After 18 months of back and forth, Best got a six-month-trial-gig on the writing team of The Young and the Restless (1973). He has been a writer on the two Bell soaps ever since.
On getting his foot in the door at "The Young And The Restless":
No one knew I wrote soaps on the side. Kay Alden would send me old outlines of shows that had already aired, and I'd write scripts and send them to her for feedback.
