While Jackie Chan has always been an affable and comedic performer, even going back to his early martial arts films from the 1970s, something curious happened when he broke into the Hollywood mainstream in the late 1990s. Producers looked at Chan's playful, heroic, somewhat goofy charm and shifted it into overdrive. Chan's American films, as a result, tended to be incredibly broad, full of silly mugging, "culture clash" humor, and a general lack of stakes. Chan's first major American hit was Brett Ratner's "Rush Hour" in 1998, a serviceable but largely unremarkable police comedy wherein Chan played opposite Chris Tucker. That film was such a runaway success (it made over 244 million worldwide) that a pattern was immediately set for Chan. Pair him with an unlikely co-star, put him in generic action scenarios, and watch the money roll in.

Kevin Donovan's 2002 film "The Tuxedo," while certainly not critically beloved, began with a cute enough premise. An affable chauffeur (Jackie Chan) becomes the driver for a kindly government agent played by Jason Isaacs. When Isaacs is unexpectedly killed, Chan inherits his tuxedo. It turns out, though, that the Isaacs character was a James Bond-type spy, and his tuxedo is, in fact, a high-tech suit of armor that can robotically manipulate the limbs of its wearer. All of a sudden, a working-class schlub can fight like Jackie Chan. The character quickly becomes embroiled in a spy plot all his own. "The Tuxedo" should have been...

The New York Knicks are one of basketball’s most storied franchises but they haven’t won an NBA title since 1973. Celebrity fans like Spike Lee, Woody Allen, and screenwriter William Goldman worshipped the star-studded — but team-first — Knicks teams of that championship era, and a generation of aging sportswriters refuse to let those hardwood legends die. Actor Michael Rapaport was only three years old when the Knicks won their last title, but he’s turned his yearning for those glory years into a documentary, When the Garden was Eden.

Toronto – Rob Ford is back in hot water after the gossip site Gawker claimed to have viewed a videotape of the Toronto mayor smoking crack cocaine. In a Thursday night post, Gawker’s John Cook said the video is for sale and shows Ford allegedly inhaling from a crack pipe within the last six months. Toronto Star newspaper reporter Kevin Donovan on Friday reported he has similarly seen the 90-second video clip in question where the city’s pratfall-prone mayor “appears to be smoking a crack pipe.” Gawker’s Cook gives a graphic account of sitting in a Toronto car

-- At least 3 men accused of making threats during or after watching the new Batman movie have been arrested in separate incidents, underscoring moviegoers' anxieties and heightened security in the wake of a deadly mass shooting at a Colorado theater showing the film.
A Maine man was arrested when he told authorities that he was on his way to shoot a former employer a day after watching "The Dark Knight Rises," Maine state police said Monday.
Timothy Courtois of Biddeford, Maine, had been stopped for speeding, and a police search of his car found an Ak-47 assault weapon, four handguns, ammunition and news clippings about the mass shooting that left 12 people dead early Friday, authorities said.
Former graduate student James Holmes, 24, is accused of opening fire in a theater in a Denver suburb. The shooting also injured 58 people.

Last we heard from Derek Gunn the Irish horror author was well on his way to becoming one of the busiest writers on the scene. His popular series, Vampire Apocalypse, was in feature film development with director Kevin Donovan (The Tuxedo) on board to direct, Descent into Chaos, the book's sequel, had just been released and a third part to the series was still on the way!
Now, word has come to us that Gunn has even sold an entirely new horror title to our favorite purveyors of Pa/Horror fiction, Permuted Press, called "The Estuary." The novel sounds intriguing (if a little ambiguous) and looks to be a step in another direction for Gunn.
The Estuary is a fast-paced, horror adventure tale, about a desperate plan formulated in the darkest years of an evil empire, which now threatens to engulf the residents of a small community in Southern Ireland.
