2022 Film Independent Spirit Awards: ‘The Lost Daughter’ Takes the Top Prize (Complete Winners List)
The 37th annual Film Independent Spirit Awards were handed out Sunday at the Santa Monica Pier, with comedy power couple Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally serving as hosts.
There weren’t too many surprises throughout the night. Troy Kotsur won the first award of the evening, Best Supporting Male Actor for “Coda,” very much as predicted. Taylour Paige took home Best Female Lead Actor, for “Zola,” while Simon Rex, of “Red Rocket,” walked away with Best Male Lead. Ruth Negga won Best Supporting Female Actor for “Passing,” beating out Jessie Buckley from “The Lost Daughter.”
But Maggie Gyllenhaal’s adaptation of the Elena Ferrante book won the three other categories in which it was nominated — Best Screenplay, Best Director, Best Feature — and was the night’s biggest victor. Gyllenhaal gave three effusive thank you speeches, spreading her appreciation around to her cast, crew, financiers, publicist, husband and mother. “Women in film!

In an unexpected trajectory (along the lines of a Lance Hammer or Markus Schleinzer), with close to two decades of production and locations department gigs that include Jean-Marc Vallee’s Demolition, Sophie Barthes’ Cold Souls and Julie Delpy’s Two Days in New York, Jeff Brown should be debuting his feature film debut sometime in 2019. His passion sci-fi/horror project The Beach House is an off the radar offering that found a great trio of indie producers in Sophia Lin, Andrew D. Corkin and Tyler Davidson and recently surfaced at the Ifp’s No Borders program. No details on the players.…...

Mélanie Laurent’s latest directorial effort “Galveston,” starring Elle Fanning and Ben Foster, is adapted from the 2010 novel of the same name written by “True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto. The writer adapted his own novel for the film’s screenplay, but moviegoers might notice something strange come the end credits: The script is not attributed to Pizzolatto but to a man named Jim Hammet. “Galveston” producer Tyler Davidson confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that Hammet isn’t a real screenwriter but a pseudonym Pizzolatto requested.
“My personal opinion is that Nic did not feel the final script reflected his work as the sole credited writer,” Davidson said, “and his representatives advised us to credit him with his pseudonym.”
Pizzolatto is known for seeking autonomy behind the scenes of his projects, which is one reason he reportedly clashed with director Cary Fukunaga during the making of “True Detective” season one. According to Davidson,...

With two seasons of True Detective under his belt, Nic Pizzolatto is trying his damnedest to break into the feature film side of Hollywood. While he co-wrote this fall’s The Magnificent Seven remake, his longest-developing project is his own adaptation of his 2010 novel Galveston. Once set to be in the hands of Armadillo helmer Janus Metz with Matthias Schoenarts leading, a new creative team has now come on board.
Mélanie Laurent, coming off her excellent, overlooked drama Breathe, will now make her English-language debut directing Ben Foster and Elle Fanning in the drama. Foster leads the “visceral crime thriller set in a boiling cauldron of violence and desperation” as a terminally ill man who is also being hunted down by his loan-shark boss. When one thinks of Pizzolatto, Laurent’s tender, intimate style of filmmaking isn’t quite the first thing that pops in our head, but her involvement...

Despite being a first time feature filmmaker, if Sophie Goodhart were to get into Sundance…it wouldn’t be her first visit. She started off in the biz when her 2003 short was accepted into Cannes Palme d’Or short comp, but Goodhart was 1/3rd of the scribes involved in the Sundance Film Fest’s Next section selected Homewrecker from directors Todd and Brad Barnes. Shot in Cleveland this past May, she took the basis and the title of her short film and lined up a feature version of it with an attention grabbing cast: Adam Scott, Jenny Slate and Nick Kroll. My Blind Brother is the sort of material that might actually fall into the U.S. Dramatic Comp which recently proved that you don’t need to be a strict drama to be included in that category, but a Premieres directorial debut could also be in the cards.

For those in the know, being in the running for a Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival is statistically…near impossible, especially for the dozen or less films selected in the short film competition. Now comes word that, an American selected 2013 short will have a growth spurt of sorts, with Deadline reporting that Sophie Goodhart‘s comedy, the feature version of My Blind Brother has nabbed the cast of Adam Scott, Jenny Slate, Nick Kroll and Charlie Hewson. Low Spark Films’ Tyler Davidson will produce with Tory Tunnell (Holy Rollers). Low Sparks’ Kevin Flanigan and Safehouse Pictures’ Joby Harold are exec producers with Joseph E. LoConti. Production will begin this May in Ohio.
Gist: Scott will play a handsome man who gets all the women and is the perfect athlete–even though he’s blind. Kroll plays his less handsome brother, whose role in life is to serve as his brother’s eyes.

Nic and Jonah have piqued this mysterious hacker’s interest, and vice versa. The trail heats up, provocations are traded online, and the trio find themselves drawn to an isolated area. Night falls, contact is made, and suddenly everything goes dark.

Independent sci-fi can be a dicey proposition. Lower budgets can mean terrible special effects, the need to create intimacy can lead to poor execution. Luckily, director William Eubank avoids most, if not all of the problems, with his new film The Signal, one of the most compelling indie sci-fi films in the past few years.
