Holy hell this year’s SXSW Film Festival really isn’t messing around.
The previous announcement unveiled a stacked horror lineup that includes headiners Evil Dead Rise and opener Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
In addition, they revealed several prominent horror titles that will premiere as part of the Midnighters program, including the Sundance hit Talk to Me and the surprise sequel to Becky, The Wrath of Becky.
It turns out, the programming team isn’t finished!
SXSW announced another wave of film programming today, including an eighth Midnighter.
“Midnighters don’t need to be exclusively horror films, they just need to perk you up and get your blood pumping,” said Peter Hall, Film & TV Festival Programmer. “That’s why this year’s SXSW Midnighters class is a mix of horror, bone-crunching action, and mind-melting genre hybrids. Some of them introduce new, terrifying lore to the canon of suburban horror movies,...

South by Southwest on Wednesday revealed the second half of its lineup for this year’s edition, set for March 10-19.
This includes Visions, the Global section presented by Mubi, 24 Beats, and Festival Favorites plus numerous additions to the Headliners, TV Premieres, Narrative and Documentary Spotlight and other sections.
‘Swarm’
New on the sked is Janine Nabers and Donald Glover’s Amazon Studios series Swarm and Lee Sung Jin’s Beef, respectively the opening- and closing-night TV premieres. They join the previously announced opening-night world premiere of Paramount’s Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
This year’s closing-night film will be announced closer to the event. In addition, there is another movie to be announced for the fest’s Monday, March 13 slot. Given the Oscars on March 12 (note the festival sets their dates five years in advance), I understand that evening’s lineup will ease a bit with amped-up...

X-Men helped to pave the way for our current cornucopia of comic-book movies, but the Twentieth Century Fox franchise sadly went out with a whimper with its final movie. The New Mutants centered around five young people brought to a secret institution to undergo treatments they are told will cure them of the dangers of their abilities, but the institution isn’t quite what they think it is. If you haven’t managed to watch The New Mutants since its release, then you might be interested to know that it will be getting a fresh start on Disney+ next month.
The New Mutants will be available to stream on Disney+ in the U.S. on October 14th. After spending years in development hell and rumours of significant reshoots, The New Mutants was very nearly shelved for good when Disney acquired Twentieth Century Fox. The film was finally released in theaters...

“Hail Mary,” a modern-day biblical fantasy that upends the mythology of Mary and Joseph, is in the works.
“House of Gucci” actor Jack Huston and Angela Sarafyan of “Westworld” will star in the movie, which is currently in production in Mexico City. Additional cast members include newcomers Natalia del Riego and Benny Emmanuel.
Rosemary Rodriguez, whose credits include “Peacemaker,” “The Walking Dead” and “Acts of Worship,” is directing “Hail Mary” from a script by Knate Lee.
“Hail Mary” is described as a retelling of Mary and Joseph story, one that promises to alter “everything you thought you believed in.”
Here’s the official logline: “Maria (Riego) is an immigrant from Belize who finds herself mysteriously pregnant. She’s following the North Star, attempting to get across a closed U.S. border. She’s being chased by the right-hand man of the devil, Baal (Huston). Helping her is Jose (Emmanuel), a...

Fortunately, the film is by no means the copper-plated disaster suggested by its postproduction problems. Instead, it’s an entertaining blend of YA horror, Marvel Comics action and teen movies.

This article contains mild The New Mutants spoilers.
The New Mutants is an odd duck. The writing was on the wall back in 2017 when 20th Century Fox first pushed the film off its original 2018 release window. Apparently the delay was the result of the studio wanting to make it more of a horror movie via reshoots… reshoots that then never happened.
Even so, those horror elements are still on bonkers display in Josh Boone’s final cut of the film, now available on Blu-ray and VOD. Even without knowing Boone was vocal that the Nightmare on Elm Street movies were cornerstone influences, it’s clear his mutant mayhem wants to live on the same block.
To be sure, these aspects are more muted than they should be, which is the result of the film’s biggest problem: tonal inconsistency. New Mutants veers wildly between young adult drama, youthful hijinks, and...

We’re just over two months away from the Dec.17 premiere of The Stand miniseries on CBS All Access, and a full-length trailer has surfaced at last following a brief teaser last month.
The trailer dropped this morning at the end of a 30-minute digital Nycc panel. The Josh Boone-helmed, nine-part series looks — from the scenes we saw — pretty damn faithful to Stephen King’s epic novel, which was originally published in 1978 and filmed once before as a four-part ABC miniseries back in 1994. Take a look:
The book begins with the escape of a biological weapon — a virulent form of plague — from a government lab and its destructive path across the United States and the world. With most of humanity wiped out, two distinct sides form in what’s left of the US: a group of righteous, basically decent folks who gather in Boulder, Colorado around a mystical old...

What does life after a weaponized virus decimates the majority of the population look like for the two factions of survivors attempting to go on, amid being on warring sides of good and evil? CBS All Access offers a glimpse in a new trailer for its upcoming nine-episode limited series adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Stand,” released Friday at New York Comic Con.

Some roads are empty, while others are littered with abandoned cars, and one very important one leads to the Boulder Free Zone, where those who Mother Abagail called to came running to rebuild society. “All I know is we dreamed of her and she was real,” James Marsden’s Stu Redman says.

The New Mutants will soon stream and spin at homes in the very-near future. While many speculated that this news would precede the recent move by studios Fox and Disney to release the film at theaters, it does signal the end of an era—especially for those of us who have spent the past 3+ years covering it—since the film will likely go down in history as having faced one of the hardest roads to a release, perhaps ever.
20th Century Fox will, at long last, release The New Mutants on Digital HD and Blu-ray on Tuesday, November 17. The Marvel Comics adaptation film, directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars), who co-wrote the script with Knate Lee, became one of the few post Q1 2020 movies that saw a big screen release, having hit theaters on August 28; a run that currently tallies at $42 million worldwide, obviously impeded by the...

CBS All Access has released the first teaser for its upcoming adaptation of “The Stand.”
The short teaser, clocking in at just 30 seconds, aired during Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards. It briefly shows Whoopi Goldberg as Mother Abagail, introducing herself to Frannie Goldsmith (Odessa Young) in a cornfield and beckoning her, “you come see me at Hemingfoot Home.” From there, it goes on to display eerie deserted streets, distressing hospital moments and even a little bit of levitation.
“The Stand” is based on Stephen King’s 1978 novel of the same name and follows a battle between good and evil among the survivors of a plague. The main characters in the apocalyptic story are primarily split into two camps: those who follow the 108-year-old Mother Abagail, and those who align with Randall Flagg, the Dark Man.

After years of delays, “The New Mutants” is finally in theaters, and a select few critics braved theaters to get the first look. But the verdict from early reviews is that Josh Boone’s “so-so” “X-Men” spinoff wasn’t worth the long wait, and may not be worth moviegoers immediately going back to theaters either.
“The New Mutants” has been delayed since before even the Disney-Fox merger way back in 2018, and some fans wondered if it would ever hit the big screen. And now that it has, Disney did not make the film widely available to critics, with some like The A.V. Club announcing their intentions not to review the film at all.
But a smattering of critics — just 18 on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing — have saddled “The New Mutants” with a lowly 22% on Rotten Tomatoes, calling it “middling,” “so-so,” or “perfectly fine,” with one critic going...

But a smattering of critics — just 18 on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing — have saddled “The New Mutants” with a lowly 22% on Rotten Tomatoes, calling it “middling,” “so-so,” or “perfectly fine,” with one critic going...

There are delayed movies, and then there’s “The New Mutants.” Originally slated for an April 2018 release before being pushed back to February of the following year, it was then delayed another six months so as not to compete with “Dark Phoenix.” Then Disney’s acquisition of Fox pushed the film back to April of this year, by which time theaters were already closed due to the pandemic. Now it finally arrives at what could charitably be described as an inopportune moment: in the middle of that same pandemic, which is very much not over.
The first, most important question any potential moviegoer has to ask themselves is whether seeing this or any film is worth the risk inherent in venturing to a movie theater. I won’t presume to answer that question on anyone else’s behalf, but suffice to say that “New Mutants” isn’t exactly a groundbreaking cinematic experience.

The fate of mankind rests on the frail shoulders of the 108-year-old Mother Abagail (Whoopi Goldberg) and a handful of survivors.
Their worst nightmares are embodied in a man with a lethal smile and unspeakable powers: Randall Flagg (Alexander Skarsgård), the Dark Man.

The New Mutants has taken so long in coming out that you can hardly call it new anymore, seeing as it was shot in 2017, but at long last it’s on the verge of arriving. Last weekend, 20th Century Studios revealed a thrilling trailer and the opening minutes of the superhero flick that’ll take things in more of a psychological horror direction. Now, this extended synopsis has been released which clarifies more about the plot, as well as confirming a major X-Men connection.
Probably the most notable member of the film’s teen mutant team is Illyana Rasputin Aka Magik, as played by Anya Taylor-Joy. Comic fans will know that Illyana is the younger sister of Peter Rasputin Aka Colossus. We weren’t sure if The New Mutants was going to make this link clear or not, but the fact that it’s discussed in this synopsis seems to...

“The New Mutants” is the only film that Disney or Marvel brought to Comic-Con@Home, but the long-delayed final entry in Fox’s “X-Men” franchise — which was delayed yet again because of the coronavirus pandemic — is sticking with its current Aug. 28 release date. At least for the time being.
The film’s panel opened by noting its numerous canceled release dates, from 2018 to now, ending with a card mentioning that Aug. 28 date, and a note: “Fingers crossed.” So the film is still scheduled for a theatrical release. Many fans speculated that “The New Mutants” was getting a Comic-Con panel to announce a streaming release, but it looks like that turned out to be incorrect.

Much buzz has been made over “The Eternals” featuring the first openly gay superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but “The New Mutants” director and co-writer Josh Boone says his upcoming tentpole will be the first to feature groundbreaking queer representation in a comic book movie. Boone tells Entertainment Weekly that “The New Mutants” includes a gay love story between the characters Rahne Sinclair (Maisie Williams) and Danielle Moonstar (Blu Hunt). These characters are two of the five mutants that make up the film’s title, which means “New Mutants” is set to be the rare comic book that prioritizes an Lgbtq+ narrative. Boone says the gay love story is “sort of the spine and focus of some of the character-driven stuff in the film.”
Maisie Williams tells Entertainment Weekly the gay love story is an extension of the comic book, where Rahne and Danielle are linked by a telepathic connection.

According to director Josh Boone, The New Mutants will feature a “beautiful love story.”
The film, penned by Boone and screenwriter Knate Lee, will be very different than any other X-Men movie or television outing thus far. Inspired largely by the 1980s “Demon Bear” comic book arc by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz, it’ll feature the story of young mutants being held forcefully at a secret facility under the appointment of Dr. Reyes (Alice Braga).
Reyes claims that young mutants can be very dangerous because they don’t yet have full control over their substantial powers. Life-long bonds will soon form between the mutant group though as they face their own pasts and attempt to escape the facility to live their lives of their own accord.

The New Mutants has the tall order of not only finishing 20th Century Studios’ X-Men film series but saving its reputation from the commercial and critical failure of the previous entry, last year’s Dark Phoenix. But things are looking bright for the forthcoming picture according to its director Josh Boone, who previously promised a tone more in line with the horror genre than the current trend of Hollywood superhero escapades.

After two years of delays, 20th Century Fox released the trailer for the X-Men spinoff “The New Mutants.”
Inspired by “The New Mutants” Marvel graphic novel published in 1982, director Josh Boone’s spinoff brings some horror into the X-Men universe. It opens on Blu Hunt’s (“The Originals”) Danielle Moonstar sitting in darkness when a voice asks her, “What’s the last thing you remember, Dani?” Faces emerge from the darkness, there’s a scream, and Dani replies, “You said we had to run.”
Then the action begins.
The movie follows five young mutants, just as they’re discovering their powers, held against their will in a secret facility as they fight to escape. It stars Anya Taylor-Joy (“Split”) as the Russian mutant Illyana Rasputin/Magik, Maisie Williams (“Game of Thrones”) as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton (“Stranger Things”) as Sam Guthrie/Cannonball and Henry Zaga (“Looking for Alaska”) as Roberto da Costa/Sunspot.

The cast of “The Stand” at CBS All Access keeps getting starrier.
Greg Kinnear is the latest name to sign on for the Stephen King adaptation, joining Alexander Skarsgard, James Marsden, Amber Heard, and Whoopi Goldberg, among others.

The Stand is shaping up to be one of the series of the decade.
Even having already airing in the longer format on television, the cast and knowing the story will get the streaming treatment and can take more risks than was formerly done on broadcast makes this event series quite an attraction.
Plus, some faces we adore are joining the already-announced cast.

The CBS All Access adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Stand” is continuing to round out its cast.
Joining the likes of previously announced stars Amber Heard, James Marsden and Whoopi Goldberg will be Eion Bailey, Katherine McNamara and Hamish Linklater.
“The Stand” presents an apocalyptic vision of a world decimated by plague and embroiled in an elemental struggle between good and evil. The fate of mankind rests on the frail shoulders of the 108-year-old other Mother Abagail (Goldberg) and a handful of survivors. The streaming platform announced in August that the prolific author himself will write the final episode of the series, providing a “new coda” that goes beyond the book.
Bailey, best known for his performances in “Band of Brothers” and “ER,” will play Teddy Weizak, a superflu survivor and member of the body crew, alongside Harold, in Boulder, Colo. McNamara, whose credits include the Freeform series “Shadowhunters” The CW’s “Arrow,...

Alexander Skarsgård is to star in The Stand, an adaptation of Stephen King’s novel at CBS All Access.
The Big Little Lies star joins James Marsden, Amber Heard, Odessa Young, Jovan Adepo, Owen Teague, Henry Zaga, Brad William Henke and Whoopi Goldberg in the drama, which has kicked off filming in Vancouver.
Skarsgård plays Randall Flagg, also known as ‘the Dark Man’, whose unsettling and ever-changing presence is the embodiment of pure evil. Like Mother Abagail (Goldberg), Flagg appears in plague survivors’ dreams but, unlike her divine messaging, his ultimate goal is far more sinister.
He recently wrapped production on Warner Bros’ Godzilla vs. Kong and also starred in Lionsgate’s Long Shot, Fox Searchlight’s The Aftermath, The Hummingbird Project, Hold The Dark and AMC’s limited series The Little Drummer Girl. He is currently on Showtime’s On Becoming a God in Central Florida and next up...
