Universal Orlando revealed new details about one of the most highly-anticipated lands in its upcoming Epic Universe expansion park: its very own Super Nintendo World.
Orlando’s Super Nintendo World will be the company’s second such attraction in the U.S., after the Universal Studios Hollywood attraction of the same name that opened early last year and has become wildly popular. The Orlando attraction’s Super Mario Land will have some of the same features as the Hollywood attraction, including a real-life Green Pipe, Mt. Beanpole, Peach’s Castle, Piranha Plants, Goombas, spinning coins, ? Blocks and Bowser’s Castle, where guests can take a spin on Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge.
One key difference: The Orlando version looks bigger, a benefit for guests not only in the fact that it has additional features, but because one drawback of the fan-favorite Universal Hollywood attraction has been that it’s fairly small and gets crowded quickly.

Epic Universe is coming to Universal Orlando in 2025, and it will have both the Mario and Donkey Kong areas in its Super Nintendo World. Ahead of its arrival in the United States, Universal Japan is set to open its Donkey Kong area this spring. Since it is opening a year ahead of Epic Universe, we now have a look at ride testing of its Donkey Kong “Mine Cart Madness” attraction.
Thanks to a video on YouTube from L.C.A. Studios, we can see various aspects of the attraction and how it will navigate the track and “obstacles.”
The video focuses on areas like a giant barrel where the cart appears to jump the track.
A shortened version that highlights some of the important testing elements was also posted to X via @TokyoGameLife.

While the upcoming Mario vs. Donkey Kong remake for the Nintendo Switch is one of the console’s most notable 2024 new releases, Mario and Donkey Kong’s rivalry has been going on for decades. The two characters have been both enemies and allies across numerous genres and franchises.
The characters are integral to Nintendo’s growth on a global stage, and their respective rises to fame have often been the source of the animosity between them. Yet, this rivalry has never been as clear-cut as you may think it is. Mario and Donkey Kong’s relationship might be legendary, but there’s a lot more to know about the plumber and the gorilla.

Once per season, the makers of "Futurama" like to tinker with their formula by presenting speculative anthology-style episodes wherein they can tell stories that are even wilder than usual. The second edition of this format was entitled "Anthology of Interest II" and aired on January 6, 2002. The wraparound device for "Interest II" was that the Professor (Billy West) invented a TV-like device called the What-If Machine which could present short videos of whatever speculative question one thought to ask it.
Fry (West), being something of a shiftless layabout, announces that he's only ever been proficient at old-school video games, and asks the What-If Machine what life would be like were it to adhere to the rules of said video games. He and the rest of the "Futurama" characters find themselves in a world where diplomatic talks between Earth and the planet Nindenduu 64 have broken down, causing Donkey Kong to throw a...

When Aaron Horvath started working on “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” he and his fellow director, Michael Jelenic, knew they wanted to avoid the mistakes that had plagued so many video game-based movies in the past. They wanted to make this movie a cinematic expression of a gameplay experience. “We knew that people coming into this movie love Super Mario as a character, but they also love Super Mario as an avatar,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent chat as part of our Meet the Experts: Film Animation panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). The two wanted to encapsulate the visceral emotions that players experience when playing the game. “For us, it was the challenge of blending the emotional experience of playing a game with the emotional experience of watching a movie. That sort of core approach informed us all throughout.”

Forest and Bird, the conservation group committed to defending nature across New Zealand, had everything planned out for its 100th anniversary celebration. They would — as they do annually — open up the vote for the Bird of the Year, this time billed as Bird of the Century. There would be keynote speakers, concert events, and museum exhibitions. What they didn’t plan for, however, were the additional days they would need to count the hundreds of thousands of votes they received for New Zealand’s best bird after John Oliver exposed...

Of all the members of the Kong family tree, there are none quite so funky as the inimitable Funky Kong, with his polka dot bandanna, cut-off jean shorts, and wraparound purple shades. Keep your Swanky Kongs and your Crankys Kongs; Funky Kong is where it's at. Sadly, though, Funky Kong was simply too funky for "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," and only appears as a background character without any lines.
Even a mere glimpse of Funky Kong has been powerful enough to make "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" the highest-grossing video game movie of all time, as well as the biggest movie of 2023 so far -- but how much funkier could the movie have been? To answer that question, Funky Kong himself (Kenan Thompson) joined Colin Jost on the Weekend Update desk for this week's "Saturday Night Live," to offer his funky wisdom, show off his funky dance moves, and...

So the big news in Hollywood the last couple of week is that the “Super Mario Bros.” movie is a gigantic hit. However, during the “Weekend Update” segment of this week’s episode of NBC’s “SNL,” one particularly iconic Mario adjacent character dropped in to explain why he’s barely in the film.
That would be Funky Kong, Donkey Kong’s cousin and really good pal who first appeared in 1994’s Donkey Kong country. And since it was played by reigning “SNL” Mvp Kenan Thompson, the sketch was an absolute delight.
“The New Mario Brothers movie is a huge hit and many fans. Were hoping for an appearance from one of the coolest characters in the Mario Universe Funky Kong. So here to talk about it is funky Kong,” “Weekend Update” co-anchor Colin Jost said as he set the gag up.

For 40 years, intrepid plumber Mario and his brother Luigi have captivated gamers of all ages, taking them on whirlwind adventures in which they teleport through pipes, stomp evil mushrooms and rescue princesses. Why do they do this? Dozens of games, several television shows and a truly terrible 1993 movie have failed to give an answer … the plumbers just warp from our reality to the next, shooting fireballs and competing in go-kart races without any deeper mythology.
There’s no real answer provided in the new Super Mario Bros. Movie, either, so don’t get your hopes up. Mario and Luigi are swooped from Brooklyn to a mystical world for reasons never really explained and embark on a quest that makes little sense but accurately captures the games’ color, energy and humor. As cinema, it’s a mess. As simulation, it works.

Before "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" hit theaters this April, the new film caused controversy online because of the voice of its main character. Chris Pratt voices Mario, the iconic plumber-turned-hero, but while fans are used to the character having an Italian accent in the video game, Pratt didn't use one for the movie. Many fans wondered why Charles Martinet, the professional voice actor who gives life to Mario and his brother Luigi (Charlie Day in the film) in the video games, wasn't tapped to voice them on screen as well.
Here's what Pratt's said about his accent in the film, and the one way the movie pokes fun at the accent drama with Martinet's help.

Is “Peaches” from “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” one of the first Oscars original song contenders of the year?
The ultimate power ballad, sung by Jack Black as the evil Bowser, will be eligible to submit for best original song consideration at the Oscars, Universal has confirmed to Variety.
“Peaches” is all about Bowser’s unrequited love. And the subject of his adoration? Princess Peach (voiced by Anya Taylor Joy), who is the ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom. The song is co-written by Black, the film’s directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, as well as Eric Osmond and John Spiker.
In the movie, Bowser is sitting at his piano belting out the ballad. He sings, “Peach, you’re so cool And with my star we’re gonna rule. Peach, understand, I’m gonna love you ’til the very end. Princess Peach, at the end of the line, I’ll make you mine.

Los Angeles, April 10 (Ians) Actor Jack Black has some ideas for ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ sequel and he is suggesting Pedro Pascal get cast as Wario.
Black voices Bowser in the animated movie and although he is not sure if his character would return for a potential follow-up film, he would want ‘The Mandalorian’ star to voice Mario’s arch-rival, reports ‘Deadline’.
“It’s not a given that Bowser will return. You know, I did a few ‘Kung Fu Panda’ movies, and it was a different villain every movie. They may do the same thing,” Black told Game Spot.
“You know, what if there is a more powerful, more evil villain? Then I may need to be turned to help Mario and the rest to defend our universe against some other unseen force of evil. Are you thinking what I’m thinking? Wario. Pedro Pascal is Wario.”

While streamers typically get by on thrifty marketing budgets, pushing content largely on their menus, most motion picture studios, like Universal, still have all the superpowers in the world to blast a movie out of a canon.
But here’s something to keep in mind as we detail Universal’s promo playbook below in propelling Illumination/Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros Movie to several opening records.: IP and marketing machine alone don’t propel a movie to great box office heights.
‘The Super Mario Bros Movie’
The movie also needs to be great. As subjective and simple-minded as that sounds, when it comes to the feature take of the ever-popular video game Super Mario Bros, it meant staying faithful to the source material itself: The game. And that’s exactly what Illumination and filmmakers Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic did in this second big screen go-round of the Nintendo game.

Look out Justin Bieber, your hit single might have a new rival.
Jack Black has brought his comedic energy and timing to the starring role of a music video set to Bowser’s song “Peaches” from the hit “Super Mario Bros.” film.
The “Peaches” music video directed by Cole Bennett, watches Black climb through a hole in what looks like a mushroom or a turtle shell to tickle the ivories on a pink piano and belt out the ballad. A framed photo of Princess Peach sits atop the piano next to a bowl of — you guessed it — peaches, the fruit. Black wears an emerald green suit, a headpiece reminiscent of Bowser’s mane as well as gold eye makeup.

Chris Pratt and Charlie Day were asked to change their original voices for The Super Mario Bros Movie because they were “a little New Jersey”.
The pair voice Mario and Luigi in the new film, an animated adaptation of the hit Nintendo game.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the pair opened up about earlier versions of the character they tested before settling on their chosen voices.
“We tried different things, different voices,” Day explained. “Every now and then they would say, ‘Charlie, maybe a little less Goodfellas in this one’ – I’m like, ‘Alright! I think you’re wrong, but fine’ – until they landed on something they liked.”
“For a minute, I walked in and they were like, ‘That’s a little New Jersey. You’re doing a Tony Soprano thing,’” Pratt added.
Meanwhile, their co-star Keegan-Michael Key spoke this week about his method for achieving the high-pitched shriek of a voice needed to play Toad.

This article contains mild spoilers for "The Super Mario Bros. Movie."
Aaron Horvath's and Michael Jelenic's "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" contains multiple, perhaps-obvious, pop music cues that accent the film's many action sequences. Early in the film, when Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) have to traverse a dangerous Brooklyn street on the way to a much-needed plumbing job, The Beastie Boys' 1987 hit "No Sleep Till Brooklyn," from their album "Licensed to Ill" plays on the soundtrack. The line "Our manager's crazy, he always smokes dust" is tactfully omitted. Later in the film, when Mario, Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), and Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) have to build and drive their own high-octane go-karts, the opening rock strains of AC/DC's 1990 song "Thunderstruck," punctuates the construction.
Both of these music cues have some thematic logic. The more baffling needle drop is the placement of A-ha's 1985 chart-topper "Take on Me,...

The Super Mario Bros Movie is now playing in theaters, and it’s looking to make some serious cash at the box office. Previous projections suggested that the animated movie would bring in somewhere between $85-90 million over a 5-day period, but those projections have since risen considerably.
The Super Mario Bros Movie is now on track to bring in a $195 million five-day opening at the box office, which would mark a record for Illumination. The previous five-day record for the studio was Despicable Me 2‘s $143 million in 2013. Audiences have clearly been hungry for a family friendly movie, and the Easter weekend should go a long way to making The Super Mario Bros Movie a big success. It’s a’ me, sequel!

It's always been unclear as to how Donkey Kong fits into the world of Mario. Technically, the two characters made their debut together in the same game and they've made numerous crossover appearances since then, but they also seem to exist in independent corners of their separate franchises. "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," however, introduces Donkey Kong as a piece of the greater Mario universe, tidying up a confusing piece of Mario lore for the creator of both video game icons, Shigeru Miyamoto.
The "Donkey Kong" arcade game, released in 1981, pitted Mario against the antagonistic Dk, though the former didn't have a full identity yet and was called "Jumpman." Both moved on to become the main heroes of their own respective series as Miyamoto directly oversaw development of the Mario games and British studio Rare handled the "Donkey Kong Country" series. Neither character appeared in each other's flagship titles, but...

This article contains minor spoilers for "The Super Mario Bros. Movie."For decades, I've played Nintendo games. They weren't the only ones I enjoyed, of course. I've spent more hours than I like to calculate on darker games like "Ghosts of Tsushima," "Assassin's Creed: Odyssey" and "Valhalla." They're a blast, and they let me indulge in my history geek side. However, these aren't games I play to forget the world for a bit. They're very much rooted in the world, full of complex emotions and situations, moral questions about the decisions you make, and full of a lot of dismembering and brutal death.
When I play a Nintendo game, specifically one set around Mario, Donkey Kong, or any of the denizens of the Mushroom Kingdom, I'm not playing it to go deep into a world gone by or murder a whole lot of enemy fighters. I'm playing it to relax.

The Super Mario franchise is a cornerstone of the video game industry. Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach…we know these names better than we know the names of our own parents (whoever they may claim to be). Yet, for as much as we know about the Super Mario franchise, there is so much we don’t know about it. Much of the series is still shrouded in mystery.
So if you’ve ever wondered what’s in the darkest corners of the Super Mario franchise, here are some of the most notable Super Mario urban legends and unsolved mysteries.
15. The True Origins of Donkey Kong’s Name
The Donkey Kong arcade game may have given Mario his big break, but Donkey Kong has obviously gone on to become a household name himself. That’s what makes it so strange that the true origins of Donkey Kong’s name remain something of a mystery.

John Leguizamo declared he would not watch “Super Mario Bros. Movie” because it did not include a Latin character.

The actor, who co-starred with Bob Hoskins as Mario’s brother Luigi in the critically panned live-action 1993 “Super Mario Bros.” film, said he has no plans to watch the new animated version of the popular video game franchise.
“No, I will not be watching,” the actor said when asked if he’d see the film. “They could’ve included a Latin character. I was groundbreaking, and they stopped the groundbreaking.”
“Just cast some Latin folk. We’re 20 per cent of the population, the largest people of color group, and we’re underrepresented,” he finished. “Overrepresented in the worst kind of jobs, though.”
He declared again that he would not see the...

After the box-office disaster that was 1993's ambitious and perhaps misunderstood "Super Mario Bros.", Nintendo has been especially protective over the brand integrity of the "Super Mario" franchise. Three decades later, the video game adaptation has become a bankable genre, especially with the success of Paramount's "Sonic the Hedgehog" live-action movies as well as this year's "The Last of Us" TV series on HBO. Now, it's Nintendo's time to shine again, so it has teamed up with Universal Pictures and animation house Illumination (known for the "Despicable Me" franchise) to bring Mario back to the big-screen in a way that is Shigeru Miyamoto-approved.
For better or worse, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is extremely dedicated to faithfully recreating every minutiae of the video games, resulting in what feels like a safe but entertaining theme park ride. As an origin story for the franchise, the plot is ultimately as...

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” takes the beloved Nintendo game characters and brings them to the silver screen with big hoorahs and many nods to the games themselves. A massive Hollywood cast and the production house of the “Despicable Me” movies bring to us a cheerful and light animated film that is rather short but absolutely enjoyable. With its adorable characters, two post-credit scenes, and massive fanbase of the game, there are definitely chances of a follow-up film in the near future.

The references and Easter eggs in "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" may keep Mario fans satiated, but they're also a celebration of all things Nintendo. As much as Illumination's new animated film is a love letter to the illustrious video game company, its credits left out a name that made a vitally important contribution to Nintendo history. That would be Grant Kirkhope, the composer of the legendary Dk Rap featured in the 1999 Nintendo 64 game "Donkey Kong 64."
The Dk Rap has experienced a strange evolution from being the target of disdain to ironic enjoyment to genuine nostalgic love. Sure, it may have been annoying to hear the same record scratches and "Here-here-here- we go!" every time you popped in the yellow cartridge of "Donkey Kong 64," but once the tune inevitably wormed itself into your brain it was hard to deny its catchiness. Kirkhope had always intended the song to be a joke,...
