In the twilight of the 1960s, America was frothing with political unrests, assassinations, and racial tension. David Schickele's hangin' out movie cum documentary slash film essay from 1971, Bushman, gets a 4K restoration, and a handsome, grainy black and white poster. The theme of this gorgeous image is connection and reflection. as two University students share a quiet moment. Laying down on a glossy surface, you can see the strange reflection of the scene, where the title car sits. Credits, pull quotes, and restoration text stay out of the way, and let the moment speak for itself. These times were anything but simple, but it taking a simple approach to entice people into it, is a superb way to go....

What’s the border between ‘unseen’ and ‘underseen’? As a canister of images and a time capsule of the eyes that saw them get into the can, David Schickele’s Bushman (1971) exists on this spectrum of availability—mostly underseen in its time, mostly unseen in ours. But these visual designations are also a part of the film’s interests and strategies: what places and people get seen, underseen, ignored? And how does time unsee them, even before posterity enters the picture? Under Schickele’s playful direction spanning the space between fiction and reality, David Myers’ careful black-and-white photography, and a central performance from Paul Eyam Nzie Okpokam at once light and deadly serious, Bushman centers a San Francisco and seventies from an exile’s eyes. Under the care of a new restoration from Kino Lorber and Milestone Film and Video, we’re thankfully invited to re-see the underseen.

Sam Bushman wears many hats. All of them scream extremist.
Bushman is the new CEO of the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association — a far-right group, with far-reaching influence, that preaches that the nation’s sheriffs have authority to judge the constitutionality of laws, and to block enforcement of any they deem objectionable.
Bushman is also the owner of Liberty News Radio, a right-wing radio and podcast network that provides a soapbox for white separatists, including airing shows that platform former KKK Grand Wizard David Duke and Charlottesville Unite the Right rally organizer Jason Kessler.

The coveted Lumière Classics label is today as sought-after in the heritage film industry as any prestigious film festival label for contemporary film fare.
Launched back at the 2019 edition of the Lumière Film Festival, Europe’s leading classic film event, the label was created to showcase a carefully curated selection of restorations of 20th century films with the aim of highlighting the work carried out by archives, cinematheques, rights holders and foundations around the world.
“’Lune Froide’ [‘Cold Moon’] was selected among many other films, so it’s extremely gratifying for us. Lumière is the heritage film festival that fights to restore these films to their former glory and develop the public’s appetite for classic cinema,” explains Anne-Laure Brénéol, co-founder and co-director of Malavida.
The Paris-based niche vintage arthouse movies outfit is bringing two titles to Lumiere this year: 1991 cult movie “Cold Moon” by French actor-director Patrick Bouchitey, and rediscovered gem “Bushman,...

Narcosis, The Netherlands’ entry for the Best International Feature Oscar, mixes a cocktail of themes perhaps for the first time ever: clairvoyance, deep sea diving and grief.
Directed by Martijn de Jong and co-written with his life partner Laura van Dijk, Narcosis is about a young family that is hit by a tragedy and deals with it in a unique way. It won the Audience Award at the Thessaloniki Film Festival as well as Best Film at the Nederlands Film Festival.

De Jong calls Narcosis “kind of a mirror” to his own family, “but not at all biographical.” During Deadline’s Contenders Film: International awards-season event, he told us he and van Dijk “treasure hunted” stories that were part of their lives.
“One of them is the clairvoyance which is something that my mother does. She has this ability in real life.
