Risa Heller Communications, which specializes in crisis and reputation management, is expanding to the West Coast. The New York-based strategic comms firm has opened a Los Angeles office and tapped former Netflix executive Erika Masonhall as Managing Director to lead the expansion.
Masonhall joins Rhc after five and a half years at Netflix, where she most recently led communications across content, marketing, and studio operations. The centrist group No Labels is scrapping its plan to offer a third-party choice in the 2024 election after failing to recruit a credible presidential candidate to lead the ticket.
“Americans remain more open to an independent presidential run, and hungrier for unifying national leadership, than ever before,” the organization said in a statement. “But No Labels has always said we would only offer our ballot line to a ticket if we could identify candidates with a credible path to winning the White House. Joe Lieberman, the former Connecticut senator and Al Gore’s Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2000, has died. He was 82.
His family said in a statement that he died due to complications from a fall.
“Senator Lieberman’s love of God, his family and America endured throughout his life of service in the public interest,” his family said. His wife, Hadassah, and other family members were at his side when he died, according to the statement.
At the time of his death, Lieberman was leading an effort to recruit a candidate for the group No Labels, which has been seeking a “unity” ticket to run independently of the Democratic and Republican parties.
Lieberman held to the view that, even in a time of hyper polarization, there was a common ground to be found in politics. His own career reflected that, and even those who criticized his positions found him friendly, kind and polite.

Bochner previously held communications positions at Bloomberg, Citigroup and Fd Public Affairs.

If there were winners out of Fox News’ debate between California’s Gavin Newsom and Florida’s Ron DeSantis tonight, it was Joe Biden, Donald Trump and the Walt Disney Company. If there were losers, it looks to be the Sunshine State governor himself, civility and Sean Hannity.
Live from Alpharetta, Ga, the crowd-free Great Red vs Blue State Debate saw the incumbent Potus get big props and support over and over from his ambitious adoptive political son. On the other side of the aisle, the Hannity-moderated event left the former Celebrity Apprentice host actually looking like a heavyweight compared to the shrill DeSantis.

DirecTV and Newsmax went their separate ways last month, and the parting has been much more sorrow than sweet.
A quick recap: DirecTV, majority-owned by AT&T, said Newsmax was seeking “rate increases” that “would have led to significantly higher costs” for the customer. Newsmax TV says that’s nonsense, and it was already heavily discounted compared to lower-rated channels. This time, the shots fired were not just a negotiating tactic, and DirecTV wasted no time replacing the right-wing Newsmax TV with fellow conservative platform The First.
Well, Newsmax TV and DirecTV are not staying friends post-breakup. Since Day 1, Newsmax called DirecTV passing on a new carriage deal “censorship” and “de-platforming.” DirecTV maintains the decision was purely a business play.
In the weeks that have followed, Newsmax has seemingly spent as much time reporting how un-American DirecTV is as it has reporting the actual news.

Would you look at that? Mortal Kombat turned 30 years old this past Halloween season! The legendary arcade fighting game known for its eccentric characters, competitive 1 on 1 gameplay, and brutal violence lives on after three long decades and is stronger than ever before. The road to get here wasn’t always roses and a casual stroll through the park but instead riddled with controversy, bans, censorships, and even government congressional hearings. In honor of the 30th Anniversary of the original Mortal Kombat, we wanted to laser-focus on the controversy it faced and the ramifications it would have on the games industry forever.
Released on October 8th, 1992, Mortal Kombat set the arcade world on fire. Sure, there were games like Street Fighter that already perfected the fighting game concept and had become a household name, but Mortal Kombat broke the mold by featuring extreme graphic violence using digitized actors. Bernard Shaw, the venerable TV news anchor who helped turn CNN into a powerhouse, has died. He was 82.
Shaw died Wednesday from pneumonia not related to Covid-19, his family said.
Based in Washington, D.C. when CNN launched, Shaw, known as Bernie to friends and colleagues, was the cable news channel’s lead anchor for two decades until his retirement in 2001.
During his tenure, Shaw anchored major breaking news events, like the attempted assassination of President Reagan in 1981, the Tiananmen Square student revolt in 1989 and every presidential election.
But it was his coverage of the Gulf War in 1991 that helped transform CNN’s fortunes, establishing the channel as a news juggernaut. Shaw reported from Baghdad during the war, the first conflict that was broadcast live for the world to see.

For the past three years, he has been a consistent and often lonely voice in the government for ending United States military support for Saudi Arabia’s war on its southern neighbor, which has turned the country into a hellish failed state while accomplishing nothing.

In John McCain: For Whom the Bell Tolls, the senator is given a heroic send-off but questionable decisions cloud his legacy
John McCain was being filmed on the porch of his home in Sedona, Arizona, looking happy and relaxed despite the mortal battle he is waging with brain cancer, when he uttered the words that are certain to go down in the annals of American political history. “I should have said: ‘Look, Joe Lieberman is my best friend, we should take him. Washington — HBO’s CEO Richard Plepler said that when he told John McCain last summer that the network planned a Washington screening of a documentary about his life, “His face lit up, and he brightened and he looked at me and he said, ‘That would be just miraculous and I want to be here to join in that extraordinary day.'”

The infamous Sega interactive movie video game, Night Trap, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this August with a re-release! With the industry's current trend of re-releasing video games, why is Night Trap receiving this same treatment? And what does this re-released version of a game made in the early 90s have to offer gamers in 2017? Stop in and find out, right here!
What you may or may not know about Night Trap is just how influential the title was, and still is, in the game industry. Originally released in August of 1992, Night Trap quickly gained a following, selling close to 1 million copies. However, what sparked this following wasn't the game or its marketing, but rather a 1993 U.S Senate hearing involving violence in video games.
Night Trap was unfairly pinned as "ultraviolent, sick, and disgusting" by former Senator Joseph Lieberman, who also incorrectly claimed that the game's main objective was...

Though nothing to get too braggadocious about — especially in light of the record-breaking 84 million viewers that Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump drew for their first debate a week ago — that sum does rank better than those of two other VP matchups: Al Gore vs. Jack Kemp in 1996 (26.6 million) and Dick Cheney vs. Joe Lieberman in 2000 (29 million). Jeremy Xido’s “Death Metal Angola” is being considered by many who’ve seen it to be a serious Best Documentary contender in the Oscar race this year and it’s not hard to see why. Xido’s doc – which examines the death metal subculture that emerged from the war-torn streets of Angola, a republic that is still reeling and rebuilding after a civil war that lasted twenty-seven years – is ultimately an affirming testament to the power of an art form that will ultimately unite and solidify a fractured culture. Given that the art form in question is death metal – that allegedly “dangerous” kind of hard-rock music that Joe Lieberman warned us about, the kind characterized by chugging, down-tuned guitars, Cookie Monster vocals and assaultive drums that sound like aural air raids – it’s a curious prospect, but it turns out to be an immensely rewarding one. “Death Metal Angola” is deeply involving and,...

New York -- Well aware that the television audience may be particularly sensitive, the Showtime network aired a disclaimer warning audiences of violent content in the season finales of its dramas "Homeland" and "Dexter" last weekend. It was two days after a gunman killed 26 people in a Newtown, Conn., elementary school.
The political thriller "Homeland" that night featured the burial of a bullet-ridden body at sea and a car bomb that killed scores of people. "Dexter," about a serial killer, had a couple of murders.
Viewer sensitivity, it seems, was not an issue: Sunday's "Homeland" was the highest-rated episode in the two years the series has been on the air. "Dexter" was the top-rated episode of any series in Showtime history.
That's just one illustration of how violence and gunplay are baked into the popular culture of television, movies and video games. While gun control and problems with the mental...

Are comic books too violent?
Sure, this is a question some will ask in the wake of a tragedy like last Friday’s massacre in Newtown Connecticut – and a question soon-to-be-ex Senator Joe Lieberman asks every day. But let me put aside my deep-seated prejudice against book-burners for the moment and tell you who else is asking this question right now.
DC Comics is asking this question. Actually, it’s asking the question “Are DC Comics too violent?” And that’s a valid question, as long as those asking it are aware that they’ve been continuing a trend of some decades and that there is no real evidence that there’s a causal link. But that DC name, now synonymous with Warner Bros, is right there on the cover… as well as on all those movies, profitable and otherwise. But movies are a horse of another color: for one thing,...

Outgoing Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-ct) appeared on Fox News Sunday where he was asked about the mass shooting in his home state and what kind of legislative solutions that lawmakers in Washington could pursue to make sure this situation never occurs again. Lieberman said that producers of violent movies and video games must be asked to “tone it down,” because violence in entertainment is “a causative factor" leading to incidences of violence.

Earlier this year, HBO premiered Game Change, a drama depicting the 2008 presidential campaign of John McCain and his running mate, Sarah Palin. Part of the reason to tune in was, of course, the casting, which had Oscar nominees Ed Harris and Julianne Moore in the respective roles (and Austin Pendelton perfectly picked as Joe Lieberman, I might add). But there also was a story there, not just an excuse for celebrity-portraying-celebrity pageantry. The plot twist of McCain choosing the little-known firecracker from Alaska provided a situation for an interesting cable biopic. Now, another Republican ticket has lost to Obama, and I wonder if there could be an HBO telling of the story in early 2016. Is there a story worth telling about Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan, and will people...

Connecticut Democrats are doubling down on their criticism of Republican U.S. Senate nominee Linda McMahon's tenure as chief executive of World Wrestling Entertainment, posting explicit footage produced by the company online.
The state party posted a video clip Wednesday of two female wrestlers who engage in a sexual act in the ring, then are thrown around by men. The video, added to Daily Motion, comes after WWE complained that the party violated copyright laws when it posted another WWE clip on Vimeo earlier this week.
Last week, the WWE also remove sexually charged WWE videos from YouTube. McMahon, who is married to WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon, is facing off against Rep. Chris Murphy (D) for the seat of retiring Sen. Joe Lieberman (I).

An ad posted by Connecticut Democrats on Monday morning showcasing World Wrestling Entertainment footage filmed under the tenure of former WWE CEO Linda McMahon, who is now running for U.S. Senate as a Republican candidate, was taken down within hours.
The video, posted by the state Democratic Party, is the latest WWE footage to be removed in recent days as the entertainment company takes down material which it says "has been misused in political environments" and seeks to transition into a "more family-friendly" brand. The material, posted by the Connecticut Democratic Party this morning, included scenes of violence and wrestlers engaged in sex acts, including a wrestler having sex with a corpse. McMahon is running against Rep. Chris Murphy (D) for the seat of retiring Sen. Joe Lieberman (I).
The ad, entitled "PG TV?" and posted to the video-sharing site Vimeo, was taken down by the company at 3:51 p.

Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) has been working really hard since he made it to the Senate to hone his bipartisan image -- and also his abs.
He appears to be succeeding on both fronts, according to Capitol Hill staffers surveyed by Washingtonian magazine for its September issue.
Brown, once famously featured nude in a Cosmo spread, ranked as the No. 2 male "Hottie" in the Senate, after Sen. John Thune (R-s.D.), with each tickling fancies on both sides of the aisle. "Thune and Brown have bipartisan appeal," Washingtonian wrote.
Brown also took the runner-up spot for "Gym Rat" behind Thune, with the magazine noting, "How do you think they stay so hot?"
Brown's campaign declined to weigh in on the beauty pageant rankings, but did point to the category that it found most relevant to the Massachusetts contest against the senator's Democratic challenger, Elizabeth Warren: Washingtonian's insiders also dubbed Brown the least partisan senator,...

Nora Ephron said good-bye.
Diagnosed years ago with an aggressive form of leukemia, she had to have known that her odds for a very long life had changed. She never went public with the diagnosis, but in her final book, "I Remember Nothing: And Other Reflections," she seems to have faced the thought of mortality unvarnished and boots forward.
As I reread that book yesterday, the message all but jumped off the final pages. “What I Won’t Miss” was one list. “What I Will Miss” was the other.
Her publisher, Knopf, has given permission to reprint both.
How fitting that Ephron got the perfectly polished, straight-to-the-heart-of-it, say-it-like-no-one-else-can last word.
What I Won’t Miss

Bad dinners like the one we went to last night

[The second installment of the "Rand Paul: Just Another Politician" series.]
Rand Paul blah blah small government blah blah states' rights blah blah Tenth Amendement blah blah and here we are:
Ahead of a scheduled Wednesday morning markup of a bill to give D.C. budget autonomy, Paul has proposed a handful of amendments that could delay consideration of Sen. Joseph Lieberman’s (I-Conn.) measure, once again tying controversial add-ons to a key legislative priority for District leaders.
[...] One Paul amendment would require the District to allow residents to obtain concealed weapon permits for handguns, and would require the city to honor permits issued to residents of other states. Another amendment would make the District "establish an office for the purpose of facilitating the purchase and registration of firearms by DC residents," in response to reports that there is only one licensed gun dealer in the city.

Senator Joe Lieberman appeared on Fox News Sunday today to talk about the continuing fallout from the Secret Service scandal and how Congress plans on fully investigating the matter. Lieberman, the chairman of the Senate committee on homeland security, said he is taking the matter "very seriously" because of how important the Secret Service is to the security of the president. He said that their actions are beneath the agency, and compared the agents involved to "a bunch of college students away on spring weekend."...

"[McCain] knows in his gut that he put somebody unqualified on the ballot. He knows that in his gut, and when this race is over that is something he will have to live with ... He put somebody unqualified on that ballot and he put the country at risk; he knows that." -- Matthew Dowd, Republican political strategist, fall 2008
Few made-for-television movies have arrived with the amount of fanfare, anticipation and attendant hyperbole as has HBO's political docudrama Game Change, which chronicles Sarah Palin's erratic and polarizing performance as the Republican Party's vice-presidential nominee during the historic 2008 presidential election. Almost as soon as the HBO production of John Heilemann and Mark Halperin's blockbuster was announced, critics -- particularly those from the Republican right -- began taking potshots at it. That chatter has built up to a veritable crescendo in advance of Game Change'spremiere Friday on HBO at 9 p.m.

"There's an old Greek saying," said Michael Dukakis in the heat of the 1988 campaign in a pointed attack on his opponent George H.W. Bush's boss, Ronald Reagan. "A fish rots from the head first. You know, it starts at the top."
Watching Game Change, I was reminded of that Dukakis-ism and how perfectly it described the mess that was the McCain campaign, led by an incredibly reckless and irresponsible man and politician named John McCain who went about the process of selecting his running mate in a manner that made a mockery of American democracy.
As I detailed in my book, Wild Card: The Promise & Peril of Sarah Palin, and as the film recounts, McCain was absolutely dead-set on picking Joe Lieberman, a man who had been the opposing party's standard bearer, as his running mate. The debate about fair vs one-sided portraits aside -- the narrative of which has dominated the political conversation side of things so far -- "Game Change," Jay Roach's HBO film about Sarah Palin's effect on the 2008 Republican campaign to elect John McCain, is, by and large, an absorbing and entertaining docu-drama-like account of this period in election history. It's also perhaps one of the most effective political cautionary tales to date, an evidential A-z portrait of what not to do when trying to pick a running mate.
Based on the well-researched book of the same name by journalists John Heilemann and Mark Halperin, “Game Change” centers, at least initially, on Steve Schmidt (Woody Harrelson), an American campaign strategist and public relations worker for the U.S. Republican Party, who had hoped to sit out the 2008 election to spend more time with his wife. That all changes when Barack Obama...

Chicago – You may be surprised by the angle taken by HBO’s controversial “Game Change,” a film already being summarily dismissed by conservative pundits who probably haven’t even seen the piece and merely assume that it’s another liberal Hollywood hatchet job. It’s not that at all. Yes, it does not make Sarah Palin nor the staff behind John McCain’s failed Presidential campaign look all that smart but it does break down some key failures of what happened on the Republican side of the ticket in 2008 in ways that take these people from “SNL” parodies to real people. It humanizes the people behind the sound bites and does so with three of the best performances on television in the last few years. It’s fantastic in so many ways.

Sarah Palin lacked the preparation or temperament to be one heartbeat away from the presidency, but what she possessed in abundance was the ability to inflame political passions and energize the John McCain campaign with star quality. That much we already knew. What I didn't expect to discover after viewing "Game Change," a new HBO film about the 2008 McCain campaign, was how much sympathy I would feel for Palin, and even more for John McCain.
The movie is largely told from the point of view of two McCain advisers, Steve Schmidt (Woody Harrelson) and Nicolle Wallace (Sarah Paulson). Schmidt was instrumental in the selection of Palin (Julianne Moore) as the running mate of McCain (Ed Harris), and Wallace was another senior adviser. During the campaign, they share their concern as Palin reveals a comprehensive lack of knowledge about current events.
In the days before Palin's selection, it seemed so much simpler.

It used to be that a politician had to be a Kennedy to get a juicy, tell-all movie made about them. On the odd chance that you can't get enough of this year's colorful Republican primaries -- if lurid accusations of Newt Gingrich's 'open marriage' or saucy rumors of Herman Cain's romantic conquests haven't been enough for you -- or if you think all the pizazz went out of the campaign once Michele Bachmann left the race (can anyone else say "Obama is a socialist" with such a winning smile?), then HBO's frothy Game Change, which debuts this Saturday March 10th, may be the remedy for you. Game Change is pure political soap opera, and in fleeting moments it even makes for compelling drama - though to be fair, Game Change is probably not an accurate view into the behind-the-scenes dynamics of the 2008 McCain campaign, or into the personality of its megawatt star,...

Jon Stewart took a break from mocking Fox News Wednesday night to react to the unsettling trend of Congresspeople participating in a legal version of insider trading under the guise of "political intelligence."
Unlike people who trade stocks using non-public information who get sent regardless of status (remember Martha Stewart?) it's perfectly legal for public intelligence gatherers to take tips from Congress and sell them to hedge funds, as a recent "60 minutes" special pointed out. Even former and current House Speakers Nancy Pelosi and John Boehner were accused of profiting from such deals. If you're like Stewart, you're probably wondering, "How is that not illegal?"
"It's a system of checks and balances," Stewart said. "They deposit checks, it increases their balances."
Once the issue of public intelligence became more public, some people spoke out, saying it's not fair that congresspeople be protected any more than the average person. "I believe...

Alec Baldwin still wants to run for office. Which office and when, however, is entirely up in the air.
The "30 Rock" star has long flirted with a political campaign. In a new interview with Piers Morgan set to air on Wednesday, Baldwin says he wants to run but pushes a potential campaign back a few years, saying that he still plans on acting for a while and that two years is an eternity in politics.
"In that amount of time, maybe in the not too distant future, I'll survey that again and think, is there an opportunity for me?" he tells the host. "Because in New York for example, we have safe Democratic seats around the horn to so speak, it's the governor and the Ag [attorney general] and the two senate seats, so what I would run for and when it would be [is] something I'd have to give a lot of thought.

Following months of light speculation, Alec Baldwin says he is no longer interested in becoming the mayor of New York City.
A disenchanted Baldwin discussed the opportunity on his weekly podcast hosted on Wnyc, "Here's The Thing," and said he just didn't belong with the cast of "horny" characters vying for the high profile role:

Top Five Off-beat Zombies!
Halloween, and the shambling undead are getting into the damndest places. Yes, from AMC’s The Walking Dead to the big budget adaptation of World War Z, zombies are everywhere. But are all zombies created equal? Nope! Oh, sure, some get the big-time press, but what of those condemned to languish in the shallow grave of obscurity?
As we recall the dead this season, I thought it’d be good to commemorate a few of the lesser-known animated corpses that, over the years, have wormed their way into our hearts, ripped them beating from our chests, and chowed down upon them as we watched. Vive les morts!

Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman sat down with Fox and Friends to talk about his opposition to President Obama's jobs bill. Lieberman said the the number one thing the country should be doing to get our economy going again is to deal with the debt. Gretchen Carlson was surprised by the his solutions. Carlson responded. "Well, as an independent, i guess i've got the freedom to say what i think." Lieberman said.

HollywoodNews.com: This is one of a handful of essays that will be dealing with the various trends that were kicked off during the 2001 calendar year, and how they still resonate today.
I don’t have all that much to say about Colombiana, which I saw this weekend. It’s well-acted (save for one overwrought emotional exposition moment in the third act), and the action sequences are suitably tight and intense. But the most noteworthy thing about this film is that its PG-13. Not only do we have yet another adult-themed and relatively violent action picture that has been awarded a PG-13 rating, but you can clearly see and hear the alterations that went into the original product to make it so. You can see the haphazard editing around the onscreen violence.
You can hear the muffling of gun shots and other sounds of violence (screams, punching, kicking, etc). Colombiana...

Baldwin 2017?
A long time political activist, Alec Baldwin is looking at a run for Mayor of New York City, he tells the New York Times. Baldwin will "probably sit out in 2013 but run in a later election," the paper reports.
A critic of Mayor Bloomberg, especially for his overturning of term limit laws that allowed him a third term in office, Baldwin is a progressive who has spoken out on the war in Iraq, advocated for gay marriage and slammed Sarah Palin for "faux populism."
