In a clear vote of confidence for Colombian director Juan Sebastián Mesa, Bordeaux-based Dublin Films has boarded his third film “Lovers Go Home!” The company also co-produced Mesa’s lauded sophomore pic, “The Rust.”
“Lovers Go Home!” centers on a Colombian single mom who leads a double life as a webcammer. One day she meets a U.S. veteran online who becomes obsessed with her. He flies to Colombia to meet her in person. Their meeting makes them reflect on who they truly are.
In development, the project participated in this year’s Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum, one of San Sebastian Film Festival’s key industry events, which ran over Sept. 19-21.
Deal was inked in San Sebastian by Dublin Films’ David Hurst and Colombian producer Federico Duran of Rhayuela Films who is in talks with potential partners in Spain and Canada.

“The Hour of the Sorcerer,” “Zombie Meteor” and “Bloody Mary” feature among a powerful lineup of 16 titles at the 2022 Sitges Fanpitch, an anticipated pitching event for sci-fi, fantastic and horror features and series.
Sitges Fanpitch runs Oct. 10-13 at the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, a Mecca for fandom worldwide.
The pitching session comes as genre is building for independents as one of the two pillars of a residual theatrical film business and sci-fi and fantasy remain a top original production choice on Netflix and other platforms.
Sitges Fanpitch frames emerging talent. Only five are not first-time directors, most notably Argentina’s Cristian Ponce, behind “Sorcerer,” whose “History of the Occult” was the highest-rated horror title for Letterboxd’s 2021 Year in Review.
Genre is ever more broadening its artistic options. Fanpitch’s sci-fi offer, for example, take in critiques of stereotypes of ableism (“Newfall”) and the social wealth gap (“Reboot”), sci-fi,...

“Rebellion,” from José Luis Rugeles whose “Alias María” competed at Cannes Un Certain Regard and was Colombia’s Oscar entry, has been acquired for international sales by Latido Films.
Latido will be bringing the title onto the market at Toronto.
In the film, Rugeles takes a non-linear approach to the narrative drifting through moments in Arroyo’s life and psyche from childhood through to the end of his life. “Rebellion” explores memory, addiction and Arroyo’s deep connection to the composition of song.
It shows the birth of legendary melodies being recorded obsessively by Arroyo into multiple tape recorders as he layers ideas upon each other. These fragments infiltrate the soundtrack throughout, at times bursting into full band performances of Arroyo’s famous songs. The authenticity of the music is aided by some of the musicians involved having played with Arroyo.
Lead producer Federico Durán of Rhayuela said: “When we...

New projects by Argentina’s Anahí Berneri and Emiliano de Torres, both big winners at San Sebastian, plus Brazilian Beatriz Seigner’s next all feature in the 14-project lineup for San Sebastian’s 2022 Europe-Latin America Co-production Forum, the Spanish festival’s biggest industry event.
Now preparing her sixth feature, Berneri debuted in 2005 with Berlin Teddy Award winner, “A Year Without Love.”
Famed as an early Daniel Burman co-scribe and longtime Ad, Torres’ career dates back to the turn of the century, although he only saw his feature debut, “The Winter,” bow in 2016.
Seigner released her first feature in 2010, “Bollywood Dream,” though she is best known for 2018’s “Los Silencios,” a supernatural-laced refugee crisis drama.
Berneri, Torres and Seigner are joined at the Forum by prospective new titles from more seasoned filmmakers such as Chile’s Niles Atallah and Spain’s Helena Taberna.

Pamplona, Spain — Now in post-production on HBO Latin America’s action horror thriller “Mil Colmillos,” one of the biggest series the pay TV operator has made out of Latin America, Colombia’s Rhayuela is advancing on development of two new TV dramas:“Agencia de Detectives” and “Casting.”
Set in an unidentified Latin American country, and based on an original idea by Rhayuela founder and partner José Luis Rugeles, whose “Alias, María,” world premiered at the Cannes Festival’s Un Certain Regard in 2015, comedy series “Agencia de detectives” is set in a contemporary world, turning on “two gumshoes who get into all sorts of problems,” Rhayuela producer Federico Durán told Variety at Conecta Fiction.
The series revisits the world of private eyes, film noir, but with a strong lacing of black comedy, he added. Regular is currently developing the series with co-screenwriter Alberto Quiroga. Rhayuela aims to structure the series as a co-production with Mexico.

HBO Latin America is marking its first foray into Colombia with the series “Mil Colmillos,” in conjunction with Rhayuela Films. Jaime Osorio, best known for his suspense thrillers “El Paramo” (“The Squad”) and “Siete Cabezas,” will co-direct the series with Pablo Gonzalez (“Cord”).
Osorio and Guillermo Escalona co-wrote and co-created “Mil Colmillos,” roughly translated to “A Thousand Fangs,” which refers to the violence and brutality that beset Colombia in the past, according to Osorio.
Series turns on an elite military command on a mission to kill off the enigmatic leader of an unidentified squad roaming the jungles of Colombia.
Plans are to film the eight one-hour episodes back-to-back in multiple locations in Colombia, including the capital of Bogota and the Amazon jungle.
“Mil Colmillos” will rank among HBO Latin America’s biggest productions, given the logistical challenges of some of its remote locations and the cast and crew Osorio is currently assembling.
