It is possible to be “scared of nothin’ and … scared to death” at the same, at least so says Luke Combs, who holds his own bellowing about the virtues of the Sooner State over a torrent of wind and rain in the video for his new song, “Ain’t No Love in Oklahoma.” The song comes off the upcoming soundtrack to Twisters, the 28-years-late sequel to Twister (and grammarians will note that Combs’ double-negative suggests there is love in Oklahoma, even if it’s a North Carolinian turned Nashvillian singing his heart out.

Luke Combs is the man of the hour. The 59th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards nominations were announced on Tuesday morning, April 9, and Combs came out on top with eight bids, including Entertainer of the Year. Check out the complete list of nominations here.
This is Combs’s fifth nomination in a row for Entertainer of the Year, an award he has yet to win. This year he’s up against Kane Brown, Jelly Roll, Cody Johnson, Chris Stapleton, Morgan Wallen and lone female nominee Lainey Wilson. Women are consistently underrepresented in Entertainer of the Year, though Carrie Underwood won in 2020 (in a tie with Thomas Rhett) and Miranda Lambert finally prevailed in 2022. But we mustn’t underestimate Wilson here. She pulled off a huge upset at the CMA Awards last fall, claiming Entertainer of the Year despite being relatively new on the scene.

Up for video of the year besides Jelly Roll, Wilson, Ballerini and Johnson are Ashley McBryde, Brandy Clark featuring Brandi Carlile, Brothers Osborne, Darius Rucker, Hardy, Jason Aldean,...

Oh, the humanity. An eight-foot bronze statue of Willie Nelson in Austin, Texas, was vandalized over the weekend, Austin’s Fox affiliate reported. Much of the base of the statue was covered in bright pink spray paint on Friday — to which we can only ask, “Why?”
Local cleanup crews were quick to remove the paint and clean the statue since the vandalization. Austin Police hadn’t responded to Rolling Stone’s request for comment on Monday regarding potential suspects or if the vandals had been caught.

Todd Snider hunkered down during the first year or so of the pandemic, and like some musicians suddenly knocked off the road, he took to online music-making — but with a unique twist. Starting in October 2020, Snider devoted each Sunday to playing and live-streaming the entirety of one of his albums, start to finish, with just his voice and guitar. Along the way he’d talk about the origins of some of the songs and play ones that had been left off.

The Grammy for Best Country Song has gone to some of the most iconic tunes ever in the genre. From all-time classics like Glen Campbell‘s “Gentle on My Mind” and Willie Nelson‘s “On the Road Again” to modern smash hits like Lady A’s “Need You Now” and critically acclaimed gems like Kacey Musgraves’s “Space Cowboy,” voters are often very careful and accurate in awarding the very best in country music. This year’s set of nominees is, in my opinion, one of the strongest the category has ever seen, with a mix of Grammy favorites and already-classic country songs facing off.
Perhaps the only song that doesn’t have much of a chance to win here is Brandy Clark’s “Buried.” The track isn’t really a big hit or particularly acclaimed, and Clark will likely fare better in the Americana categories anyway. Still, Clark got six nominations this year,...

Monday, January 8th, would’ve been David Bowie’s 77th birthday. To mark the occasion, Wilco has shared their rendition of Bowie’s 1969 hit, “Space Oddity.”
The release hails from Wilco’s 2023 performance on Mountain Stage (a public radio show distributed by NPR Music), and will be included on an upcoming compilation announced today titled Live On Mountain Stage: Outlaws and Outliers, due on April 19th via Oh Boy Records.
Presenting a wonderfully Wilco-esque take on “Space Oddity” — itself named the 43rd best song of all time by Consequence in 2012 — the band settles into an acoustic arrangement, allowing Jeff Tweedy’s vocals to masterfully convey the tune’s enduring appeal for humanity.

It’s hard to think of 2023 in music and not mention the success of Barbie, Karol G’s international takeover, the rise of singer-songwriter-dancer-engineer Victoria Monét and the launch of future pop star Tyla.
And then there’s Sza and Beyoncé. They released mind-blowing albums last year, but they didn’t snooze in 2023.
And speaking of snooze, here are 10 favorite songs of the year.
1. Sza, “Snooze”
“Ain’t a home when you’re not here/Hard to grow when you’re not here,” Sza sings on this modern love song currently uniting the entire world. Babies and young children are cutely singing the melody (and in harmony!). Boys and men are proudly singing the lyrics written solely by a female artist. And the aunties approve of its R&b authenticity. With some production assists from living legend Babyface and legend-in-the-making Leon Thomas, Sza’s confessional track is poignant and perfect.

The Turnpike Troubadours are coming home again for two nights, and so is “King of Oklahoma.”
Turnpike will play January 19-20 at Oklahoma City’s Paycom Center, joined by Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit. Turnpike will play January 19-20 at Oklahoma City’s Paycom Center, joined by Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit. Together, they represent two of the hottest acts in independent music and two of the most talked-about albums of the past year. Isbell’s Weathervanes was released in June, and Turnpike’s A Cat in the Rain dropped in August.
“For us, there’s not anything like an Oklahoma crowd,” Turnpike frontman Evan Felker tells Rolling Stone.
