Just two years ago, it seemed like the summer blockbuster might be a thing of the past. After Covid kept cinemas closed across the United States for the majority of 2020, the box office reopened in 2021 on uncertain footing, with many high profile flops and a soft performance for the movies overall. That summer seemed like the harbinger of the end for the seasonal release strategy that “Jaws” perfected all the way back in 1975, wherein the hottest months hosts the biggest titles — marketed aggressively to theatergoers. It seemed like those days were behind us, and the streaming age had finally overtaken the days when movies could be events. So thank goodness for “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.”
Things aren’t entirely rosy at cinemas again (and Hollywood writ large is a mess), but things are improving at the box office with those July 21 releases helping to massively goose theatrical business, picking up where...

Another player is interested in returning to Weeds. The possibility of a revival was first reported in May. Showtime is developing a revival of the popular comedy-drama series that aired on the cable network for eight seasons between 2005-12. Christian Torpe would write and executive produce the series.
Mary-Louise Parker, Elizabeth Perkins, Hunter Parrish, Kevin Nealon, Alexander Gould, Justin Kirk, Andy Milder, Allie Grant, and Romany Malco starred in the original series. Parker is set to return for the new incarnation. The original comedy follows housewife and mom Nancy Botwin (Parker) as she finds creative ways to support her family after the death of her husband. The revival would reportedly take Nancy to Copenhagen.

If the long-gestating Weeds Revival gets the green light, another original star is interested in stepping back into the world of Nancy Botwin.
Elizabeth Perkins appeared in five of eight seasons during the show's initial run on Showtime.
In an interview with Variety, Perkins stressed that the new project was very much "talk" at this early stage in development.
The Afterparty Season 2 star admitted she would be ecstatic to get the opportunity to work with her former co-stars.
"I loved working with Mary-Louise Parker," she added.
"I love those two characters together, Nancy and Celia!"
Indeed, fans would be interested in checking back in with Celia, who was missing from the show's final three seasons.
By the end of Weeds' eight-season run, the series had changed so much that many of the original elements of the show were missing.

Elizabeth Perkins is high on reprising her role as Celia in Showtime’s possible Weeds revival.
In May, it was reported that the premium cabler — on which all eight seasons of the Og series aired from 2005 to 2012 — is developing a sequel series that would feature the return of Mary-Louise Parker’s Nancy Botwin. (The project had previously been in the works at Starz.)

As has been teased for several years, a return to the world of Weeds is in the works.
Initially, a sequel series was in the works at Starz, and now, the revival is set to sprout at Showtime.
Deadline says the series is in early development but that Mary Louise Parker is set to return to headline and executive produce.
Additionally, Showtime is also working on an update of Nurse Jackie, with Edie Falco in line to return.
The Weeds sequel will be written and executive produced by Christian Torpe, creator of the popular Danish series Rita, and would feature Nancy (Parker) in Copenhagen, the outlet reports.
Both series are said to be on the fast-track, with an eye of getting them on the air as early as quarter one of 2024.
However, the deals are still being ironed out, and a potential pickup could be contingent on what happens with the Writers Strike.

Exclusive Updated: Showtime is looking to bring back two of its signature comedy series, Nurse Jackie and Weeds. Both hail from Lionsgate Television and former Showtime chief Robert Greenblatt who has a deal at the indie studio.
Reps for Showtime and Lionsgate would not comment but I hear the followups, now in early stages of development, have the original leads, Edie Falco and Mary-Louise Parker, attached to star and executive produce. Sources stress that the projects are still coming together and deals are being negotiated.
The Weeds revival would be written and executive produced by Christian Torpe, creator of the popular Danish series Rita, and would feature Nancy (Parker) in Copenhagen, I hear.
Meanwhile, I hear the Nurse Jackie sequel would be written/executive produced by Abe Sylvia and Liz Flahive who were writers-producers on the original series. The concept is still being finalized.

It’s been nearly four years since we learned that a “Weeds” sequel series was in the works. When Variety exclusively broke the news of the revival in 2019, which was then at Starz, Mary-Louise Parker was set to executive produce and reprise her role as Nancy Botwin in the potential new series. But Justin Kirk, who played her charming and unfiltered brother-in-law Andy Botwin, isn’t so sure about it.
“Even as a fan, do you really want to see us all old and coming back? By the time of Season 8, I don’t think the general idea was, ‘We should keep doing this!'” he told Variety. “Look, I love those people, I love that character. I probably know as much as you do about any future reboots.”
In Variety‘s original report, the logline for the new “Weeds” was: “The new show picks up with the Botwin family...

It may seem mainstream these days, but a sequel to the subversive, Emmy Award winning episodic comedy series "Weeds" continues in development at Starz with Lionsgate Television producing, starring Mary-Louise Parker, 10 years after Season Eight, as the 'Botwin' family adjusts to making a living in a new era of cannabis legalization:
"Weeds" was created by Jenji Kohan, airing on Showtime 2005 to 2012, following central character 'Nancy Botwin' (Parker), a widowed mother with two boys 'Silas' (Hunter Parrish) and 'Shane' (Alexander Gould), who begins selling marijuana to support her family.
Other main characters include Nancy's lax brother-in-law 'Andy Botwin' (Justin Kirk), who moves in to help raise her children, foolish acquaintance 'Doug Wilson' (Kevin Nealon), narcissistic neighbor 'Celia Hodes' (Elizabeth Perkins), Celia's husband 'Dean' (Andy Milder) and their daughter 'Isabelle' (Allie Grant), as well as Nancy's dealers 'Heylia James' (Tonye Patano) and 'Conrad Shepard' (Romany Malco).

Starz is “pretty excited” about the Mary-Louise Parker-led “Weeds” sequel series it has in the works, despite the fact Jenji Kohan — who created the original series for Showtime — is still not involved in the project.
But that’s not for lack of trying, as Lionsgate — which owns Starz and produced the drug drama — continues to talk to her about joining the followup series, according to Starz CEO Jeffrey Hirsch.
“‘Weeds,’ as we’ve announced before, is in development,” Hirsch told reporters during the Television Critics Association press tour Tuesday. “We’re pretty excited about Lionsgate putting together a great package with ‘Weeds.’ Obviously, Mary[-Louise] is a great actor. The world of cannabis has changed significantly, so there’s a ton of cannabis’ story to be told. So we’re excited to see what Lionsgate comes up with.”

In order to prepare to voice Nemo in Disney's Finding Dory, 12-year-old Hayden Rolence got a pretty cool homework assignment. "I had to watch the original Finding Nemo over and over again," the Illinois native tells People. "And I never got bored of it!" The actor who voiced Nemo in 2003's Finding Nemo was Alexander Gould, now 22, and after his turn in the film, he appeared in a slew of TV shows - including a regular stint as Mary Louise Parker's character's son, Shane Botwin, on Weeds. He went on to study philosophy at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts,...

Finding Dory brings back some key members of the Finding Nemo voice cast, including Albert Brooks as Marlin and of course Ellen DeGeneres as Dory. But one who couldn’t reprise his role was Alexander Gould, who voiced Nemo in the original film. The reason is obvious: Gould was a small child when he recorded the original Nemo, but nowadays he’s a grownup with a grownup’s […]

Pixar and Disney have unveiled a series of character posters today for Andrew Stanton’s upcoming animated sequel, Finding Dory.
Bubbling up from the depths of the deep blue sea, fans of Stanton’s Finding Nemo will recognize a handful of familiar faces in the gallery above, most notable of which being Ellen DeGeneres’ forgetful fish, Dory. There’s also shots of Marlin and Nemo – voiced by Albert Brooks and Hayden Rolence, respectively, with the latter replacing Alexander Gould from the 2003 original.
Beyond that core trio, Finding Dory is no slouch when it comes to casting, either, with Diane Keaton, Willem Dafoe, Dominic West, Kaitlin Olson, Ty Burrell, Diane Keaton, Ed O’Neill, Eugene Levy, Idris Elba and Michael Sheen all on board for Pixar’s aquatic adventure. She just kept swimming—into a full-length trailer! The Ellen DeGeneres Show debuted a new look at Finding Dory, and it looks every bit as wonderful as we expected. Ellen DeGeneres returns to voice her beloved character, as does Albert Brooks as Marlin. Hayden Rolence replaces Alexander Gould as Nemo. The new animated film also features the vocals of Ty Burrell as a beluga whale named Bailey; Willem Dafoe as Gill, a moorish idol; Diane Keaton as Dory's mother, Jenny; Eugene Levy as Charlie, Dory's father; Vicki Lewis as Deb (and her sister, "Flo," Deb's reflection), a four-striped damselfish; Kaitlin Olson as Destiny, Dory's sister, a whale shark; and Ed O'Neill as Hank, an octopus....

Keeping up her habit of swimming (and swimming and swimming), the images are as much a showcase of Pixar’s vibrant rendition of the deep blue as they are a game of hide-and-seek.

The first decade and a half of the 21st century has brought a lot of changes to the landscape of film. The advancement and sophistication of computers has made realistic computer generated effects a mainstay in both big-budget and small-budget films. The internet and streaming technologies have given big Hollywood new competition in films produced independently and by non-traditional means. We went from purchasing films on yards of tape to plastic disks, and now we can simply upload them to the cloud. Advertisements for films have reached a higher, more ruthless level where generating hype through trailers and teasers is crucial for a film’s commercial success. Movie attendance has fluctuated along with the economy, but that hasn’t stopped films from breaking box office records,...

The first trailer for "Finding Dory," the much-anticipated sequel to "Finding Nemo," is out, via Ellen DeGeneres' YouTube channel. The movie is set six months after the events of the first film. Spoiler alert: Dory's memory has not improved. She's snoring and sleepswimming and looking for her family, a task that should prove difficult since she can't really remember anything. But since Eugene Levy and Diane Keaton are providing the voices of Dory's parents, she'll probably find them at some point. DeGeneres, of course, is returning to provide the voice of Dory, as is Albert Brooks, who plays Marlin. Willem Dafoe and Vicki Lewis are also back. Nemo will be voiced by Hayden Rolence since Alexander Gould is a bit too old, 12 years after "Nemo," for the part. "Finding Dory" is set to be released on June 17, 2016. Check it out above!

Twenty years ago Pixar Animation Studios released their first feature-length film: Toy Story. It was the first completely computer generated film out there and changed everything. Every other studio making animated films has been trying to catch up to them, not only in terms of technological achievements but in crafting stories that make everyone old and young laugh, cry, and thrilled. Not every single film they've made has been a home run, but their track record thus far has been pretty impressive. This year's release Inside Out is no exception, arriving as the fifteenth feature in the animation house's stable. Given the occasion, I've taken it upon myself to rank Pixar's first fifteen features to settle once and for all what is the best and worst from the studio. I contemplated bringing in the short films that precede each of their features, as many are just exquisite if not better than the films they accompany,...

Might Pixar’s upcoming sequel Finding Dory take its characters to the mean streets of Baltimore? Almost absolutely not, but good luck getting that image out of your head now that it’s been revealed that The Wire co-stars Idris Elba and Dominic West have both signed on to lend their voices to new characters in the Finding Nemo follow-up.
West, who is starring in Showtime’s ambitious fall series The Affair, dropped the news during an interview with Shortlist, simply teasing:
“We’re both in the sequel to ‘Finding Nemo,’ so we were recording that.”
No word yet on which characters the actors will be playing, but Finding Dory is set to take place at least in part along the coast of California, where scatter-brained regal tang Dory (Ellen DeGeneres) reunites with many important people from her past one year after the events of the first film. Freaks and Geeks Episode 13 ‘Chokin’ and Tokin”
Written by Judd Apatow
Directed by Miguel Arteta
Aired 3/20/2000 on NBC
The last episode to air before NBC canceled Freaks and Geeks, ‘Chokin’ and Tokin” displayed many of the things that made the show great: layered characters (both major and minor), a stark look at the transitions of life, and a show that challenges the foundations of faith. It may very well be the best episode of the show, despite the absence of Kim Kelly, and how isolated the various plots of the episode are – what it lacks in narrative cohesiveness, it makes up for in poignant character moments.
As most people do, I remember ‘Chokin’ and Tokin” as The One Where Lindsay Smokes Pot – but in reality, her story doesn’t get going until the second half. The first half takes a hard look at the “stoner life”, showing how dependent Nick...

The simple tale of a lost clownfish looking to get home remains one of animation studio Pixar's best-loved and most successful hits. When young Nemo (Alexander Gould) is separated from his protective dad (Albert Brooks), he embarks on an eye-opening adventure on which he makes shoals of friends - not least the forgetful blue tang Dory (Ellen DeGeneres) - and an ocean full of dangers. With Willem Dafoe, Geoffrey Rush and Barry Humphries on board, the vocal colour is just as rich as the spectacular animation.

Hard to believe it's been a full 10 years since Disney and Pixar released "Finding Nemo" (on May 30, 2003). That means that you and your kids (or you and your parents) have watched it on DVD approximately, oh, seven bazillion times. Even among Pixar's stellar slate of movies, the underwater adventure has been a standout, an instant classic, and one of the most popular animated features ever made.
Still, there may be a lot you don't know about "Nemo," like where the idea for the film came from, or how some of the stranger underwater sound effects were generated, or who some of the surprising cast members are (and aren't). Read on for these and other revelations from the deep.
1. Writer/director Andrew Stanton's inspirations for "Finding Nemo" were a childhood memory of a fish tank in a dentist's office and a visit to the Six Flags Marine World park with his five-year-old son.

With 2013 being the 75th anniversary of Superman and Man of Steel scheduled to come out this summer it was a forgone conclusion DC would release their emblematic direct to home media animated feature this year. DC certainly has been more successful than their marvelous competition at translating their classic stories to this format. Superman: Unbound however, ends up being a mediocre entry for this franchise. With a limited scope and a stereotypical plot it adds nothing to the Superman mythos. It feels less like an extended feature and more like a pilot episode of an upcoming television series. The moment an entire generation of film fans has who have just kept swimming since 2003 is here, as Pixar announced today that the sequel to their smash hit "Finding Nemo" will be called "Finding Dory" and will hit theaters on November 25, 2015.
And star Ellen DeGeneres, who voiced Dory in the original movie, couldn't be happier.
"I have waited for this day for a long, long, long, long, long, long time," DeGeneres said in a press release. "I'm not mad it took this long. I know the people at Pixar were busy creating 'Toy Story 16.' But the time they took was worth it. The script is fantastic. And it has everything I loved about the first one: It's got a lot of heart, it's really funny, and the best part is — it's got a lot more Dory."
