The highly anticipated live-action adaptation of Satoru Noda’s Golden Kamuy had its opening day stage greeting on Jan 19, 2024, at Toho Cinemas Roppongi Hills in Tokyo.
The cast, including Hiroshi Tamaki, Asuka Kudo, Shuntaro Yanagi, and Ryohei Otani shared their behind-the-scenes experiences and shed light on the challenges encountered during filming.
Since Golden Kamuy is set in the late Meiji era in Hokkaido, revolving around a battle for a substantial Ainu treasure, the filmmakers took on the challenge of capturing the authentic winter atmosphere of Hokkaido, leading to extreme conditions during the shoot.
Yanagi revealed the harsh conditions, stating, “It was a tough shoot; we even had icicles forming in our ears. We used to check with each other, wondering, ‘Are our ears frozen?‘”. Asuka Kudo too added to this, highlighting the persistence of the icy challenge, especially during extended takes.
“With scenes that couldn’t be wrapped up in a single take,...

A recent press conference held to commemorate the completion of the Golden Kamuy live-action film unveiled a heartfelt message from the manga creator, Satoru Noda, who shared his thoughts on the film after attending its premiere.
In the message Noda revealed the initial worry he harboured deep down on how his vision for Golden Kamuy would translate onto the big screen. However, after attending the preview, he shared a sense of relief, indicating that the movie had surpassed his expectations.
According to the author, the movie featured many aspects he hadn’t even envisioned.
He then went on to praise the actors for their portrayal of characters, describing them as ‘cool, mature, cute, and well-suited’ to their respective roles. He noted that their appeal brought a unique liveliness to the characters, distinct from the manga.
Noda ended the message by encouraging the fans to watch Golden Kamuy live action film.

Hiroshi Tamaki is another actor that has recently turned director, as in the case of Kengo Kora. His own short has boxing as its main premise, but essentially deals with the concept of the self through a rather philosophical approach.
Count 100 is screening at Short Shorts Film Festival and Asia
Kago is a professional boxer that made it to the top, becoming the Japanese lightweight champion two years ago. Shortly after, however, he was defeated, and he never managed to bounce back from the loss. Beaten both metaphorically and literally, Kago receives a leaflet by a stranger on the street and decides to check it out, only to find himself facing a creature that soon assumes his own appearance, and promises to make his life better,...

Even though J-horror will probably never reach the heights it achieved during the “Ringu” era, the Japanese movie industry still continues to produce films of the genre, although in a much lesser frequency. Shoh Kataoka tries his hand in the category, through a film that doubles as a family drama, and definitely thrives on its atmosphere.

Well Go USA has announced that the next historical Chinese epic to cross the Pacific will be Lin Shan Zhao's The Assassins, coming to Blu-ray and DVD. Chow Yun Fat stars alongside Yifei Liu (White Vengeance) and Hiroshi Tamaki (Heavenly Forest). Reviews of the film since it's release in China in October have been fairly middle of the road, but we think any time Chow Yun Fat appears onscreen, it's worth taking note.

You've heard that they're making a live action American version of Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira (1988), right? That's the sci-fi cartoon that really opened the Anime floodgates here in the States. I have a faint memory of seeing the movie in the theater when it arrived in the States -- I think 1990? -- and that memory involves two things: my jaw was mostly open throughout from the epic violent craziness, and my best friend at the time who I went to every movie with (hi Kevan!) turned to me during the climactic battle when Tetsuo transforms hideously into this blob like creature and said something silly like "quivering mounds of blubbery goo" in a dramatic but silly voice. We started giggling and a rather, um, large patron in front of us turned around to give us hateful looks. Embarrassing! But we were just reacting to the visuals on screen, I promise.

I’m a bit late in posting this, but in case you missed it, here’s the trailer for Nodame Cantabile Saishu Gakusho Kouhen, the followup to “Nodame Cantabile Saishu Gakusho Zenpen” which opened in Japan back on December 19, 2009.
The new film picks up where the first installment left off—Nodame (Juri Ueno) and Chiaki (Hiroshi Tamaki) mutually decide that it would be for the best if they parted ways for a while so Nodame can practice for an upcoming competition. However, when things don’t go her way, she gets impatient and depressed. While Nodame is away, Chiaki’s former pianist Rui Son (Yu Yamada) returns to take her place. To make matters worse, Rui and Chiaki are set to play the song Nodame dreams of playing with Chiaki herself: Ravel’s “Concerto in G Minor”.

Thanks to the Twitch gang we've finally got a full look at the explosive, live action Manga adaptation Mw.
When a top secret chemical compound called Mw infects an island near Okinawa, the military is sent in to kill all the victims and cover up the incident. A survivor named Michio Yuki (Hiroshi Tamaki) grows up to become a highly-successful banker, but he is slowly being driven mad by the effects of Mw. After committing a series of ruthless crimes to get revenge against the people responsible for the cover-up, he decides that the only way to truly get revenge is to unleash Mw on the world and exterminate the entire human race.
While the trailer is definitely more satisfying than those early teasers, it's tough to tell the tone when there's a Jpop song blasting the background. But ah well, that seems to be par for the course these...

The teasers were exactly that, nothing but a tease but now we get a live-action adaptation of Osamu Tezuka’s manga Mw and a look-see at some footage from the film. Not bad. As is par for the course the makers of the trailer ‘wisely’ decided to throw that standby JPop song smack dab in the middle of it. Please stop doing that, especially when it comes to trailers for thrillers and such. You’re taking away from the feel of it.

It aint showing a whole lot more than the previous teasers but a fresh - and slightly longer - teaser for the live action adaptation of Osamu Tezuka’s manga Mw has just arrived online. And for those who only know Tezuka as the creator of the classic Astroboy, well, you’re in for a surprise because this is darker stuff by far.

TOKYO -- Director Izuru Narushim's Midnight Eagle has been selected to open the 20th annual Tokyo International Film Festival.
Starring Takao Osawa, Yuko Takeuchi and Hiroshi Tamaki, the thriller is about a stealth aircraft that disappears in the mountains of northern Japan while still carrying a bomb with enormous destructive power.
"We decided to lead with 'Midnight Eagle' because it's a large-scale, spectacular movie that is just perfect to open an event as large as this year's TIFF," Mariko Yoshida, a spokeswoman for the festival's organizing committee, said Tuesday. "And we must also point out that this is a joint production between Shochiku and Universal Japan, and that collaboration underlines the importance of this international film festival."
Based on the novel by Tetsuo Takashima, Eagle was filmed with the assistance of Japan's military on a budget of $10 million.
The festival runs Oct. 20-28, though Eagle will make its world premiere Oct. 2 in Los Angeles, with Shochiku apparently hoping to attract attention ahead of the American Film Market in Santa Monica.
