Phil Mattingly is being promoted to CNN’s chief White House correspondent, following the departure of Kaitlan Collins to the network’s revitalized morning show.
Mattingly previously served as senior White House correspondent covering the Biden administration. He previously was a congressional correspondent. He joined the network in 2015 and covered Republican candidates on the campaign trail, including Chris Christie, John Kasich, and Donald Trump. On the White House beat, he broke news including Biden’s plans to sanction Vladimir Putin, details on a multinational effort to target Russian supply chains and developments on the president’s Opec negotiations.

Updated, with comments from Tucker Carlson: Karine Jean-Pierre devoted the start of her first press briefing as White House Press Secretary on Monday by paying tribute to the 10 victims of the mass shooting in Buffalo, NY, as authorities point to the suspect’s embrace of a ‘great replacement” theory that elites are “replacing” white voters with more obedient non-white immigrants.
Jean-Pierre, though, declined to specially name any politicians or Fox News host Tucker Carlson who have espoused some version of “replacement theory,” to the condemnation of groups like the Anti-Defamation League.
ABC News’ Cecilia Vega asked, “On this notion that immigrants or others are believed to be by some ‘taking over’ and pushing white people out of positions of authority in this country, which is at the heart of so much of this terror that is being spewed online, does the White House believe these views are being amplified by Tucker Carlson?...

Jake Tapper, the Washington-based correspondent for CNN, will likely get a new spotlight at the network after it said it would expand his weekday program to two hours and make him the lead anchor for all Washington events. The move is part of a broader shakeup of the cable-news outlet’s Washington coverage, which has taken over more of its schedule in the last few months of the Trump administration.
As part of the changes, Abby Phillip will take over as anchor of the weekend broadcast of “Inside Politics,” while Dana Bash will co-anchor the Sunday talk program “State of the Union” with Tapper. Tapper and Bash will each anchor two Sundays a month, beginning January 24th.

"How do you do it?!" HBO Max / CNN Films have released an official trailer for a journalism documentary called On the Trail, titled in full: On the Trail: Inside the 2020 Primaries. Developed internally by CNN, the doc film takes viewers behind-the-scenes to provide a "front-row seat to history for a glimpse into what it takes to cover a presidential campaign." The focus is on the powerhouse female journalists at CNN, set against the backdrop of one of the wildest elections in American history. Which is a bit of a soft way to describe what's happening. Including: Dana Bash, Kaitlan Collins, Jessica Dean, Daniella Diaz, Annie Grayer, Kyung Lah, Mj Lee, Abby Phillip, Arlette Saenz, and Jasmine Wright. It's impressive how fast they took current events...

CNN debate moderator Abby Phillip asked Bernie Sanders in the Tuesday debate in Des Moines:
“CNN reported yesterday — and Senator Sanders, Senator Warren confirmed in a statement — that, in 2018, you told her you did not believe that a woman could win the election. Why did you say that?”
Not “did you say that,” but “why did you say that?”
Sanders denied it, then listed the many reasons the story makes no sense: He urged Warren herself to run in 2016, campaigned for a female candidate who won the popular vote by 3 million votes,...
