Dane Diliegro‘s breakthrough role as the feral Predator in 2022’s Prey marked him as one to watch in the genre space. Now, the 6’8″ actor can be seen going feral on screen once more in Imaginary, as the more monstrous version of Chauncey the Bear.
Imaginary, out now in theaters, is directed by Jeff Wadlow (Cry Wolf, Kick-Ass 2, Truth or Dare, Fantasy Island, The Curse of Bridge Hollow) and stars DeWanda Wise, Tom Payne, Taegen Burns, Pyper Braun, Veronica Falcon, and Betty Buckley.
The horror film introduces a cute, imaginary teddy bear named Chauncey, brought to life via the award-winning animatronic and practical effects house Spectral Motion. But there are many iterations of the villain, with the Diliegro’s Bear Beast delivering critical scares and at least one notable kill. Bloody Disgusting spoke with Diliegro about his turn in Imaginary, where the actor provided more insight into the film...

The Curse of Bridge Hollow and Fantasy Island director Jeff Wadlow’s Imaginary adheres to the time-honored tradition of transforming make-believe childhood pals into sinister manifestations that torment their abandoners. Here, a cuddly teddy bear named Chauncey harbors dangerous resentment for being forgotten, igniting a wave of terror for an unsuspecting family. If only that terror extended to the audience experience.
A cold open teases the monstrous imaginary friend via nightmare sequence before introducing the central family unit. Jessica (DeWanda Wise), along with her husband (Tom Payne) and stepchildren Taylor (Taegen Burns) and Alice (Pyper Braun), relocate from their hectic New Orleans apartment to Jessica’s childhood home in the suburbs. Typical growing pains and adjusting to a new town are compounded by dark family histories. Then Alice finds a cute teddy bear named Chauncey in the basement, which will force Jessica to confront painful memories when Alice starts behaving strangely.

With a similar elevator pitch and budget as M3GAN, Jeff Wadlow’s Imaginary is clearly striving to become 2024’s PG-13 horror darling about an evil children’s doll wreaking havoc on a family already in a state of metamorphosis. Regrettably, the filmmakers here have completely abandoned the archness of tone and shades of camp that made M3GAN such an entertaining, if ultimately inconsequential, experience. In place of that film’s knowing playfulness is an overwrought family drama that’s as undercooked as it is painfully familiar.
The blended family at the center of Imaginary consists of comic book artist Jessica (DeWanda Wise), her new husband, Max (Tom Payne), and his two kids from a previous marriage, Taylor (Taegen Burns) and Alice (Pyper Braun). While moody, edgy teenager Taylor constantly gives Jessica the cold shoulder, Alice—much to her big sister’s chagrin—has started to warm up to her stepmom.

The Predator franchise gets a stealth prequel in the shape of this smartly written sci-fi thriller that has the dreadlocked alien super-hunter under-estimating a worthy new opponent. In terms of sequels, Prey is comfortably the best Predator film since the 1987 original, though admittedly, that’s not a particularly high bar to clear.
Directed by Dan Trachtenberg (whose franchise-tweaking credentials were previously showcased in 10 Cloverfield Lane), Prey is set in 1719, on the Great Plains, where young Comanche tribeswoman Naru (Amber Midthunder) is desperate to become a warrior, fighting alongside her brother Taabe (Dakota Beavers). She finally gets her chance when she’s invited to participate in the ritual of kühtaamia and hunt and kill a vicious animal, before...

Get to the convention! There was a mini Predator reunion over the weekend as Carl Weathers and Jesse Ventura met up at a convention, bringing together two of the key cast members of the fan favorite action flick. If only we could have gotten Bill Duke and that other guy…
Ventura — who played minigun-lovin’ Blain Cooper in Predator — plugged the event on Facebook, writing, “Come on down to the Mad Monster Party in Atlanta! I’ll be here today and tomorrow signing autographs and taking pictures with all the fans. Plus it’s a Predator reunion! Got to see Carl Weathers.” Weathers played Al Dillon (you son of a bitch!).
The original Predator, which came out in 1987, spawned a full-blown franchise for better or worse, with the first sequel, Predator 2, arriving in 1990. The series took a lengthy break before crossovers Alien vs. Predator (2004) and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007) and...

Jeff Cutter and Dan Trachtenberg are no strangers to taking residence within larger franchises. The director of photography and director, respectively, have collaborated on feature films set in both the worlds of “Predator” and “Cloverfield” — and delivered best-of entrants along the way.
And both offered unique challenges, too: For Hulu’s “Prey,” the trim, exciting “Predator” prequel from 2022, the duo took advantage of the great outdoors in a massive scope. “Prey” director Dan Trachtenberg wanted his “Predator” spinoff, which is set in 1719, to be shot in a naturalistic way, so cinematographer Jeff Cutter made use of available light whenever possible — especially from fire and the moon.

In the movie, Comanche warrior Naru (Amber Midthunder) tracks and hunts down a killer alien through the woods. “I would use fire as much as possible and augment it if we had to,” says Cutter.
A few scenes were entirely lit by fire torches, with no supplemental lighting. For those moments, the Dp would advise Midthunder and other actors how to hold the torch without disrupting their performances.
Throughout, Cutter wanted the moonlight to be a presence. “That was important to me because we were going...

A few scenes were entirely lit by fire torches, with no supplemental lighting. For those moments, the Dp would advise Midthunder and other actors how to hold the torch without disrupting their performances.
Throughout, Cutter wanted the moonlight to be a presence. “That was important to me because we were going...

“It’s always a very rewarding experience for the audience when they can just watch and hear, and the scene can still have a very profound impact on the viewer,” reveals “Prey” editor Angela Catanzaro A.C.E. about immersing the audience in a visual and sonic adventure in which the human vs. alien death-match is presented with minimal dialogue. For our recent webchat she adds, “that’s always one of my favorite exercises to do as an editor. I’m a very much a minimalist when it comes to dialogue, to see how much we can do with just a little bit.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

From man-eating piranhas to rabid Saint Bernards, there’s no shortage of animal-related antagonists in the horror genre. In fact, popular films like Jaws have even managed to convince audiences that certain critters pose a bigger threat than they actually do, leading to devastating consequences for the environment when folks take up arms and hunt innocent animals to the brink of extinction.
However, not all horror flicks are about evil creatures of the night, with some stories depicting heroic animals that come to the rescue when our protagonists need it most. And with the Holiday season upon us, we thought that this would be a good time for a heartwarming list celebrating Six Animal Heroes in Horror Movies! After all, who hasn’t questioned whether or not their beloved pet would come to their defense if one were to be attacked by masked murderers or flesh-eating zombies?

Science fiction is one of the most versatile genres not only in film but in the arts in general. It is a genre intrinsically tied with the social, political, and economic strife of any particular time — oftentimes, the cyclical nature of humanity will mean that a sci-fi movie relevant in the 1950s will become relevant in the 2020s. Without science fiction, who knows what the landscape of film and television would be like today?
All of this is to say that 2022 was arguably terrible, although the sci-fi films released this year were pretty damn good. While some movies had their hype campaigns accentuated with festival runs, others seemed to come out of nowhere to delight genre fans and casual viewers alike. From micro-budget films to big Hollywood blockbusters, the genre was rife with sci-fi movies that not only helped diversify the genre but also made us think about it in totally new ways.

Jhane Myers, the producer of the thriller film ‘Prey’, shared that the team conducted extensive research with regard to the way of life and traditions of the Native American tribe of Comanche. The film presents a vicious and terrifying showdown between various predators with a gripping narrative and representation of the Comanche tribe.
Talking about the work it took to learn about the tribe, Jhane said, “We did extensive amounts of historical research and studied their customs and period-appropriate dialogue and sign language.”
She added: “The Comanches hunt and fight for survival. Everything that they hunt, like when they hunt a Buffalo, every part of that Buffalo is used. Nothing is wasted, and they’re also thankful for the spirit of that Buffalo that’s able to nourish them, clothe them, and is used for everything that they need in life.”

Prey‘s Dane Diliegro may not be so recognizable to viewers of the Hulu film as he was covered by plenty of makeup and prosthetics to take on the Predator look. The actor came to TV Insider and TV Guide Magazine’s studio, sponsored by Hollywood unBranded, at San Diego Comic-Con to chat about the movie, but stuck around to offer up some fun facts about himself. In the video, above, he opens up about what job he’d be doing if he didn’t pursue acting, his hobbies, favorite snacks, and much more. (Credit: Maarten de Boer/@iheartmaarten) The former basketball player admits that if he wasn’t a performer, he’d “be hosting culinary travel TV, no question. Traveling the world, eating food, telling people about it,” he muses in the video, above. Likening himself to an Anthony Bourdain that’s “a little taller” with “a little less cigarettes.

Ever since its first disastrous design for the 1987 "Predator" movie, each iteration of the Yautja, known most commonly as "the Predator," has been reworked and reimagined for the screen while also trying to find new ways to make it easier for the performers playing the creature. This has been no easy feat in part due to the overall species' design of the Yautja.
The design itself is thoroughly intimidating. Yautja are generally tall and muscular, with their bodies looming over their prospective victims. They sport hair-like appendages, which, while not exactly intimidating, are striking. To wrap up the terror, the species features mandibles that heighten fear once revealed when their masks are removed. All of these elements work against comfortability for the actor embodying the Predator creature from start to finish.

"Prey" is such a refreshing take on the "Predator" franchise that really the only connection it seems to have to other films is the eponymous alien and a certain flintlock pistol. Set 300 years ago on the Great Plains, this instalment of the series focuses on a Comanche tribe that runs afoul of a Predator's first hunt on Earth. It also embraces the kind of natural horror and terror that comes from such a simple role reversal like the hunter becoming hunted -- something that made the first film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger such an edge-of-your-seat action thriller.
Director Dan Trachtenberg has described "Prey" as a David vs. Goliath tale, in which Comanche hunter Naru (Amber Midthunder) is forced to adapt to tracking and hunting the hulking Predator, played by the towering 6'9" actor Dane Diliegro. Naru's exhausting struggle against the alien is analogous in a way to Diliegro's own experience behind the scenes.

As the best-reviewed film featuring the elusive Predator, "Prey" is a return to form for the long-running franchise in more ways than one. Following a sole protagonist in Naru (Amber Midthunder), the Indigenous-led narrative recalls the bare-bones, cat-and-mouse game that made the original "Predator" film so riveting. The creature that inhabits the unique setting is a different, devolved Predator (Dane Diliegro) that still instills pure terror in its prey. The innovative nature of "Prey" is partially thanks to the new faces in front and behind the screen, but longtime collaborators contribute to the refreshing update of the previously-declining property.
Behind the scenes, "Prey" features the return of select filmmakers closely attached to the foundation of the franchise. The prequel brings back special effects veterans Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff Jr. to handle the creature that torments "Prey," redesigning the futuristic, complex look typically attributed to the Predator to fit the 1719 setting.

Warning: This article contains major spoilers for "Prey."
After Shane Black's disappointing 2018 movie "The Predator," it seemed like the franchise was ready to be put out to pasture. The extraterrestrial game hunters were now endowing humanity with a laughable "Iron Man" tech suit to fend off their species, which makes you wonder how the series had devolved to this point. But thankfully, it appears that Dan Trachtenberg's "Prey" has reinvigorated the movie monster, and, by extension, the deceptively simple premise at the heart of this franchise.
"Prey" brings "Predator" back to its roots, with a lone Yautja, the Predator's species, using the Northern Great Plains as its hunting ground. The 18th century sci-fi thriller showcases the awesome Amber Midthunder as Naru, a persevering Comanche warrior trying to prove herself, only for a Feral Predator (Dane Diliegro) to come down and put her hunting skills to the ultimate test.

Director Dan Trachtenberg described his Predator movie, Prey, as a “David and Goliath story” in a recent featurette. It’s an apt description, and not solely because it refers to the first Predator hunt on Earth, 300 years ago. It’s also because the Predator itself is a bit of a giant.

With every movie in the "Predator" franchise, each respective creative team has sought to revitalize and reinvent the eponymous creatures hunting our hapless group of humans in the hopes of living up to the original classic. Whether in the jungles of Vietnam or the streets of Los Angeles or otherworldly locations entirely, various protagonists have come up against the unstoppable might of the Yautja and only a very select few have ever walked away from those encounters — in part because of how different (subtly or otherwise) each antagonist has been carefully designed for each outing.
The villain in the shadows of director Dan Trachtenberg's "Prey" (portrayed by Dane Diliegro) is no exception, having undergone a radical visual shakeup to reflect the brand-new setting of the latest installment. The team responsible for bringing the Predator to life in Hulu’s acclaimed prequel “Prey” was uniquely positioned for the project. StudioADI’s award-winning industry veterans Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff Jr. have worked on many celebrated films, including the original “Predator,” and they are the co-creators of the alien in director Dan Trachtenberg’s film. “Prey” has also achieved record-breaking debut viewership for the streamer, and inside that Predator suit is monster actor Dane Diliegro.
“Prey’s” iteration of the iconic creature, which is a combination of physical costuming and CGI, differs from previous incarnations. “Some of our earliest conversations with Dan were about making this Predator super slim with some kind of weird camouflage and different from the reptilian thing we’ve seen before,” Woodruff Jr. explained, adding that the different proportions hinted at the Predator’s stage of development.

With the new “Predator” prequel, “Prey” (now streaming on Hulu), set in the Comanche nation in 1719, director Dan Trachtenberg wanted a more appropriate design for the iconic alien hunter. He’s leaner, more feral, and primitive-looking (played by Dane Diliegro in a special effects costume). Yet he’s still as ferocious and badass as ever. Gone is the metallic mask/helmet and armor. They’ve been replaced by a skull mask and Dreadlocks, exposing the alien’s lower mandibles.
“Dan brought parameters of likes and dislikes, and initially one of the notes said that he wanted this [Predator] to elicit more horror,” said SFX supervisor Alec Gillis, who, with co-sfx supervisor Tom Woodruff, runs the acclaimed Adi special effects company that also works on the “Alien” and “Godzilla” franchises. “So that got us talking about whether or not this could have been the origins of demonic spirits in the eyes of the Native people,...

The direct-to-Hulu release of “Prey,” the action-thriller prequel to “Predator,” notched the most viewing hours ever on the Disney-owned streamer in its first three days — among all TV series and movies.
That would mean “Prey” had a bigger aggregate viewing-time total over three days than “The Kardashians,” which Hulu in April said was its biggest TV series premiere at the time.

It’s good news all around for brand new Predator movie Prey, which has not only won over critics and franchise fans alike, but the film has also broken a new record over at Hulu.

Meagan Navarro wrote in her 4-star review for Bloody Disgusting, “Prey surprises in how different yet similar it feels to the franchise’s origins. It feels right at home with the mythology of the Predator universe yet stretches the boundaries in tone and scale. Soaring spectacle meets intimate storytelling, delivering one of the most solid entries in the franchise yet.

Additionally, Prey is the most watched film premiere on Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ under the Star Banner in all other territories, based on hours watched in the first three days of its release.”

It must be gratifying for filmmakers to know that the Monday after Prey’s premiere on Hulu (and Disney+ in Europe), many were debating whether the Predator prequel should’ve been released in theaters. The quality is certainly good enough with the film generally impressing most critics as demonstrated by its 92 percent “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. A majority of viewers also seem pleased if social media chatter is to be believed.
The emerging consensus about this one seems to be that director Dan Trachtenberg and a cast of primarily Indigenous actors knocked it out of the park, making the first truly gripping Predator movie since the original was released in 1987. And, truly, the final movements of Prey where Amber Midthunder’s tenacious Comanche warrior, Naru, lures a Predator into the ultimate deathtrap is as exciting a showdown between a human and a “Yautja” as we’ve ever seen onscreen.

In 1987, Dan Trachtenberg was too young to see John McTiernan’s R-rated Predator, but the older kids in his karate tournament carpool insisted on telling him the whole movie anyway. And at the time, Trachtenberg distinctly remembers a story involving Sonny Landham’s half-Sioux tracker, Billy Sole, who died in a dramatic fight with the Predator. The only problem is that no such scene exists, something Trachtenberg would later figure out. Billy does decide to face the creature head on, but the scene cuts away, leaving the audience with only his blood-curdling scream to infer death.
Oddly enough, rumors have persisted for years that Billy Sole’s full death scene was included in rare VHS releases or TV edits, but there is no concrete evidence to support that such a scene is anything but a myth. Thankfully, a mere rumor led to something very real 35 years later.

Hollywood newcomer Amber Midthunder stunned at Tuesday’s Los Angeles premiere of Hulu’s “Prey.”
“This is from the Sky-Eagle Collection,” she told me about her dress on the arrivals carpet at the Village Regency Theatre in Westwood. “Throughout this whole press tour, it’s been very important to me to incorporate always having an Indigenous designer or jewelry or something like that. So every look that I’ve had, there’s been something Indigenous.”
“Prey,” the fifth film in the “Predator” franchise, takes place in the Comanche Nation in 1717. Midthunder, who is an enrolled tribal member at the Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Indian Reservation, plays Naru, a young warrior saving her tribe from a Predator (Dane Diliegro).
Here, Midthunder talks more about her fashion choices, working alongside an all-Native cast and what it was like dubbing the film in Comanche.

Who knew the secret to the Predator franchise’s future was to always go back in time? It seems director Dan Trachtenberg did! This weekend’s Prey is the culmination of years of passion, and years of planning, from the filmmaker who wrested the Predator movies away from their recent and failed experiments of franchise-building in the future. Instead the new movie finds a simple and potent blend of historical fiction and sci-fi fantasy when one of those aliens from above decides to go hunting on Comanche lands during the early 1700s.
It’s there we find the first good protagonist in this franchise since Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1987. But Amber Midthunder’s Naru is neither an Austrian Übermensch or a great warrior (yet) among her people. Rather she is a young woman determined to prove she is the latter, including to her older brother Taabe (Dakota Beavers). In the end,...
