Two of Britain’s biggest stars won top honors at the BAFTA TV Awards on Sunday: Timothy Spall finally prevailed in the Best Actor race after three previous bids while Sarah Lancashire collected a bookend Best Actress award for the third and final season of “Happy Valley”; she’d won for season 2 back in 2017 and has a supporting prize for “Last Tango in Halifax” as well.
Backstage, Spall readily admitted, “I’m over the moon about this. I just am. So often the bridesmaid, today I catch the bouquet.” He then pondered the importance and meaning of awards ceremonies. “When you keep losing them, you think they’re a load of bollocks. And then you win and you think well, actually… Really, I suppose, in a way, they are both — they’re magnificent and they are an in-house thing. But it’s a profession — a dodgy, shaky, insecure profession that occasionally celebrates itself,...

The 2024 BAFTA TV Awards very much celebrated the best of British TV tonight as the majority of big-name stars and more recognizable shows fell away to British shows and stars. The likes of “Succession” and “The Last of Us” went home empty-handed at the Royal Festival Hall. “Top Boy,” “The Sixth Commandment,” and “Such Brave Girls” claimed the three big prizes at the ceremony hosted by comedians Romesh Ranganathan and Rob Beckett.
“Top Boy,” Netflix’s hit show about two London drug dealers dealing with gang violence in East London, won Best Drama Series over “The Gold,” “Happy Valley,” and Emmy hopeful “Slow Horses.” Producers Charles Steel and Alasdair Flind came backstage to discuss their victory, which came for the fifth and final season of the fan favorite.

Awards season may well be over for another year in the world of film, with the Oscars, BAFTAs, and Golden Globes just a distant memory now. But on Sunday evening, one of the biggest nights in British TV, the BAFTA TV Awards — this year hosted by comedians Rob Beckett and Ramesh Ranganathan — took place at London’s Royal Festival Hall. And on a night where the two most nominated shows, Black Mirror and The Crown, failed to snag a single win, Happy Valley, Top Boy, and The Sixth Commandment enjoyed great success in key categories, each taking home two awards apiece.
On the night, Sarah Lancashire won Leading Actress for her all-timer of a turn as police sergeant Catherine Cawood in Happy Valley, her second BAFTA for the same role. The show also snagged the public-voted Memorable Moment award for Catherine and Tommy Lee Royce’s (James Norton) remarkable final kitchen showdown.

Timothy Spall is ready to bring “Joy to the World.”
“It’s a Christmas story, but an unusual Christmas story,” he tells Variety about his upcoming film, directed by Edward Hall. Calico Pictures and Shuk (Studio Hamburg UK) produce for Sky, while James Nesbitt co-stars.
“It’s about a troubled 12-year-old kid who is pretty obnoxious, really. He is clever but doesn’t like his life. His mom is struggling and his brother is desperate for a present he is not going to get. He is full of hate. Then he witnesses a robbery.”
It’s an unusual robbery, however, taking place during a “Santa Dash.”
“He sees one of them rob a bank, tries to pursue him and then encounters this old man in the woods, under the tree, claiming he is Father Christmas. Obviously, the kid thinks he’s mad. It’s a sweet movie, but it has this hard edge to it,...

Directly based on the deaths of the elderly Peter Farquhar and Ann-Moore Martin in the late 2010s in Buckinghamshire, Saul Dibb’s 4-part drama series is an emotional nerve-wrecker. It showcases how two kind-hearted people in the twilight of their lives fall prey to a remorseless murderer named Ben Field. Ben was an insurance fraudster who duped the elderly by making them believe his lies about love and companionship, and he would make them sign their wills to him before he took their lives. Although not unheard of as a crime, the diabolical way in which Ben ruined the lives of his victims before dealing the final blow is what makes this miniseries so painful to watch. There was one thing in common between both of Ben’s victims, though: they were deeply lonely. Ben used this weakness in the lives of two absolutely harmless people and capitalized on it like a parasite,...

Everyone has that one elderly man in their town who waves at you every day when you drive to work or that octogenarian who still takes her pets for walks despite her feeble age. Their whole aura and demeanor give out a single vibe of pure, unadulterated benevolence, and you know for a fact that these are the people in the twilight of their lives who’d never hurt a fly. Yet, evil always finds a way to latch on to the best of us, and most of the time, their favorite prey are the good people who’ve suffered from loneliness their whole lives. It’s like a testament to the degeneracy of such evil that they can sniff out the pangs of the absence of companionship and attack exactly those vulnerabilities that they tried to take shelter from their entire lives.
Such was the situation in the picturesque little town of Maids Moreton,...

In November 2015, The Guardian published an obituary for retired English teacher Peter Farquhar under its “Other Lives” umbrella – a feature that pays tribute to the legacies of non-public figures. Written by a former pupil, it commemorated Peter as having inspired a love of literature in his students, who remember him with respect and affection. Peter had been found dead, aged 69, at his home in Maids Moreton, Buckinghamshire on October 26th of that year. His death had not been considered suspicious.
Just over two years later in January 2018, Farquhar’s name was back in the press, this time as a suspected victim of murder. Two of Peter’s students at the University of Buckingham, 27-year-old deputy church warden Ben Field and magician 31-year-old Martyn Smith, had been arrested in connection with his death, and with that of his 83-year-old neighbour Ann Moore-Martin.

Most true crime dramas retell stories from long enough ago that many viewers weren’t alive to hear about them the first time around, from David Tennant’s portrayal of 1980s serial killer Dennis Nilsen in Des to The Serpent, the BBC drama about 1970s murderer Charles Sobhraj. But ITV’s latest example, The Hunt for Raoul Moat, depicts a violent crime so recent that we don’t just remember hearing about it, we remember tweeting about it.
In 2010, Raoul Moat shot three people in Northumberland: his ex-girlfriend, Samantha Stobbart, was seriously injured, her partner Chris Brown died, and police officer David Rathband was blinded and later took his own life. A six-day manhunt gripped the nation, culminating in a police stand-off at a riverbank, where Moat shot himself. Dramatising such a recent tragedy has attracted criticism – including from the families of Stobbart and Rathband – and led many to wonder:...

After five years of quietly gathering steam within the international TV community, the 2023 edition of the London TV Screenings is its biggest outing yet.
Running Feb. 27 to March 3, the event features more than 25 distributors and 400 buyers. But how did the confab evolve from a set of casual screenings by rival distributors of the BBC into an event that now rivals MipTV in Cannes?
Its genesis goes back to 1976, when BBC Showcase was created from 25 European buyers gathering in Brighton’s Old Ship Hotel to watch episodes of shows such as “Fawlty Towers,” and buy such programs for audiences back in their home countries. The showcase then moved to other locations, including Edinburgh and Harrogate, before returning to Brighton, and eventually relocating to Liverpool in 2012.
The number of distributors and rivals to the BBC grew, so they arranged meetings with buyers and partners in London after the Showcase and began to...
