Breslin shared a picture from their time on set, showcasing herself, Ellingson, and their co-star Sofia Vassilieva, who played their terminally sick sibling. In her caption, she reflected on her experiences working with the late actor. “Evan was a genuinely thoughtful person who cared so much about turning in the best performance, which he accomplished. Some of his scenes in Msk still give me chills,” Breslin wrote. “He was also silly, funny, a prankster, a lover of Red Bull (I hated the smell of Red Bull), and he was energetic and the life of the party,...

I’m not entirely sure what the message is at the center of Lindsay Gossling’s 13 Minutes. In fact, I’m pretty sure there isn’t one. A line of text runs before the end credits stating how the film honors those who have been affected by extreme weather, but there’s no mention of climate change, what you can do to help, or anything beyond the reality that extreme weather and affected people exist. And that’s how it treats everything across the board. Because despite being a disaster film, Gossling also injects hot button issues like racism, abortion, immigration, disability, and homophobia into its fabric without saying anything of substance about them. She merely acknowledges their existence as something to deal with. A better title might be Both Sides: The Movie.

It was probably just a matter of time before John Green and Josh Schwartz became collaborators. Green, whose novels include “Looking for Alaska,” “The Fault in Our Stars,” and “Paper Towns,” has become known for writing teenagers filled with so much restlessness and existential melancholy that they can hardly stand it. Schwartz, whose shows include “The O.C.” and “Gossip Girl,” has built a television brand based on brooding teenagers who wish they could skip straight to adulthood. Both their characters tend to be precocious and wild-spirited, determined to live (as “Looking for Alaska” puts it) “a more-than-minor life.” And in fact, Schwartz optioned the rights to “Looking for Alaska” before it was even published.
In adapting it almost 15 years later as a limited series for Hulu, Schwartz and longtime producing partner Stephanie Savage have brought the novel to life with meticulously calibrated sentimentality. Miles (Charlie Plummer), once Green’s narrator,...

Miles “Pudge” Halter (Charlie Plummer), the teen hero of Hulu’s Looking for Alaska, is obsessed with famous last words, like poet François Rabelais’ declaration, “I go to seek a Great Perhaps.” But as he confesses to his new friends at an elite Alabama boarding school, he’s never actually read the works of the writers he quotes, just their biographies. It’s a shallow perspective on the artists’ lives, and Looking for Alaska — based on John Green’s debut Ya novel — could risk being a similarly superficial take on...

Joris Jarsky, Sheila Houlahan and Sofia Vassilieva are the latest to join Warner Bros’ thriller The Little Things starring Oscar winners Denzel Washington, Jared Leto and Rami Malek. Written and directed by John Lee Hancock, the plot follows Deke (Washington), a burned-out Kern County, CA deputy sheriff who teams with Baxter (Malek), a crack Lasd detective, to nab a serial killer. Deke’s nose for the “little things” proves eerily accurate, but his willingness to circumvent the rules embroils Baxter in a soul-shattering dilemma. Meanwhile, Deke must wrestle with a dark secret from his past. Jarsky is repped by Grandview; Houlahan by Hartman Entertainment; Vassilieva by Greene & Associates Talent Agency and Lighthouse Management.

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for John Green’s novel “Looking for Alaska” and, therefore, some for Hulu’s upcoming adaptation of “Looking for Alaska”)
Fans of John Green’s “Looking for Alaska” who don’t want the upcoming Hulu adaptation of the beloved 2005 Ya novel to clear up the ambiguity at the center of the story can breathe a sigh of relief, because the limited series’ creator, Josh Schwartz, says they won’t explain anything.
“We will never know what happened that night,” the “Gossip Girl” and “O.C.” mastermind told reporters during the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour Friday. “And if you’ve seen the first episode, that is as much as you will see of the event. And it is a mystery what happened and that is part of what the characters will have to grapple with, and the audience.”
