When Netflix enticed “Black Mirror” creators Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones to make their first interactive non-children’s episode, little did they realize what a complicated rabbit hole they were falling into. With “Bandersnatch,” though, life imitated art, as they created not only the ultimate “Black Mirror” story about the dark side of tech, but also a landmark achievement for Netflix with all sorts of future interactive programming possibilities.
And what a tangled web it was to edit “Bandersnatch,” which had to compellingly satisfy as both a “Black Mirror” entry and an interactive journey. In “Bandersnatch,” viewers decide the fate of a young programmer from 1984, Stefan (Fionn Whitehead), who adapts a choose-your-own adventure fantasy novel into a video game. Along the way, Stefan collides with his widower father, Peter (Craig Parkinson), a legendary video game creator/mentor, Colin (Will Poulter), and several subsidiary characters. And each choice the viewer makes becomes progressively more dangerous,...

From ’The Birth of a Nation’ to ’Iron Man’: The love affair between Hollywood and the Pentagon (photo: Lillian Gish and her Ku Klux Klan saviors in ’The Birth of a Nation’) In TomDispatch.com’s excellent March 2008 article "The Golden Age of the Military-Entertainment Complex: Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, Pentagon-Style," journalist and author Nick Turse (The Complex: How the Military Invades Our Everyday Lives) traces the mutually rewarding — and very close — ties between the American film industry and the American military complex throughout the decades. And there goes Hollywood’s reputation as a liberal enclave filled with unpatriotic, treacherous, anti-flagwaving pacifists. As author and professor Tom Engelhardt explains in his introduction to Turse’s article, "Hollywood and the Pentagon have been in an intricate dance of support and cross-promotion for almost a century, from a time when the Department of Defense was still quaintly — if more accurately — known as the War Department.

@vdao1972 shares his experience of the historic verdict.
Vinh Dao is a Cambodian photographer who tweeted in the official court press room during the trial of Cambodia’s Khmer Rouge leader, “Duch,” this morning. The Un-backed war crimes tribunal announced a long-awaited sentence and Fast Company got the scoop on the verdict and twitter in Cambodia, a country where only .5% percent of the population uses the internet.
How many others at the trial were tweeting through it? Surprisingly, I think I was the only one. I kept searching to see who else was there so I could retweet what I missed from the feed but couldn't find anyone.
Were you in the actual room where the trial was taking place? What was the mood like? I was in the press room during the trial but I had a chance to talk to a couple of people that were in the...
