The character of The Mandarin first appeared in the pages of Marvel Comics back in 1964, created by Don Heck and Marvel bigwig Stan Lee. In John Coates' 2014 book "Don Heck: A Work of Art," Heck admitted that the Mandarin was more Lee's idea, as he wanted an old-fashioned Fu Manchu-like villain to face off against Iron Man, one of the company's B-list characters. A lot of the cliches and stereotypes embodied by Dr. Fu-Manchu (a villain character from a 1913 pulp novel by Sax Rohmer) transferred directly into the Mandarin. The Mandarin is a supervillain from China and was initially drawn as a racist caricature.
In the original comics, the Mandarin possessed 10 magical rings, salvaged from a crashed alien spaceship. He was one of Iron Man's earliest nemeses. The character has stubbornly remained in the background of Marvel comics for decades.

Dave Bautista has made it clear on social media over the last several years that one of his dream movie roles is the Batman villain Bane, but the wrestling icon turned action movie star doesn’t just talk the talk. During an appearance at JusticeCon (via Collider) to promote his leading role in Zack Snyder’s “Army of the Dead,” Bautista revealed he organized a meeting with Warner Bros. and DC Films to more or less demand the role of Bane whenever the studios decide to revive the villain character on the big screen.
“I want to play Bane so bad I went to Warner Bros., had an appointment with them, had an appointment with DC, walked in the door and said, ‘I want to play Bane,'” Bautista said. “I’m not kidding. They were a little like. ‘Woah, we’re not even casting Bane.’ I was like ‘I don’t care,...

Dave Bautista denied reports on Friday that he would be playing Bane in Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” — although he said he tried his best to get the role.
“I just read an article speculating that @DaveBautista ma be, should be, could be playing Bane in the new #Batman movie with Robert Pattinson. Please, DC movies… make it happen,” a fan tweeted the “Guardians of the Galaxy” actor.
“Unfortunately it’s not,” Bautista tweeted in response. “Tried my best.”

In December, Bautista tweeted a picture of himself at the Warner Bros. lot with the caption, “it won’t come to you so get after it!! #DreamChaser.” That tweet led many fans to hope he would be putting on the Bane mask.
The character of Batman’s adversary has appeared in two Batman live-action films previously.

In an interview with Philly.com, Co-Creator of Bane Chuck Dixon discusses the creation of the character and his different incarnations in the media, including Wrestler Robert Swenson's performance in Batman and Robin (stating that in that film, the character was an "imbecile"). He also talks about what he thought of actor Tom Hardy's portrayal of the character in The Dark Knight Rises. "Apparently, Warner Bros. was pressuring Nolan to use the Riddler, which would have been too similar to the Joker," Dixon continued. "Plus, the Riddler, like the Joker and so many of Batman's villains, is no challenge against him in a mano-a-mano fistfight. Batman will wipe the floor with him in that situation. I am beyond glad that Nolan had the juice in Hollywood to stick to his guns," he added. "From interviews I've seen, it's clear he understands the character and he gets what we were going for.
