Updated with results: An effort to recall Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón was rejected today, with the county clerk’s office announcing that organizers submitted only 520,050 valid petition signatures, short of the required 566,857.
Organizers of the recall submitted a total of 715,833 petition signatures to the county Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s office in an effort to force Gascón into a recall election. County officials initially conducted a random sampling of the signatures to verify their validity. Based on that initial sampling, the county undertook an effort to verify all 715,833 signatures individually.
The county announced Monday that 195,783 of the signatures were invalid. In many cases, the person signing the petition was not a registered voter, and there were also more than 45,000 duplicate signatures, according to the county.
“We are obviously glad to move forward from this attempted political power grab, but we also understand that there is far more...

Two men arrested last year in the deaths of model Christy Giles and her architect friend Hilda Marcela Cabrales-Arzola have been charged with murder, rape and accessory after the fact by the Los Angeles County District Attorney.
“I recognize that these charges are a small consolation to the friends and family members of Ms. Arzola and Ms. Giles,” D.A. George Gascón said Tuesday in a downtown press conference officially announcing the new charges against David Pearce and Brandt Osborn. “And although we know nothing can bring these daughters and friends back to us, I promise that my office will do everything in its power to hold those that harmed them accountable.”
The complaint (read it here) was filed June 24 by Deputy D.A. Catherine Mariano.
Looking at multiple rape and drug charges as well as two counts of murder, the incarcerated Pearce could face life in prison if found guilty.

Bill Maher Attacks John Cena, LeBron James, Tom Cruise, Eileen Gu For Siding With Totalitarian China
Bill Maher couldn’t hide his contempt for the country hosting the Winter Olympics on his Friday Real Time.
Maher called out freestyle skier Eileen Gu, an American-born skier who chose to participate on China’s Olympic team for the Beijing games. Gu hasn’t said whether she gave up her American citizenship to do so, but plans to return to Stanford University and has reaped millions of dollars in product endorsements in China.
“She chose to represent a totalitarian police state over America,” Maher said, calling China an “authoritarian surveillance state.”
Acknowledging that the United States has its problems, Maher noted that at least the US is “a democracy based on freedom.” China has “jailed an entire ethnic minority,” and said it was a cynical dodge to overlook China’s sins in its treatment of Hong Kong freedom and its desire for a Taiwan take-back.

When a medical professional performs a forensic examination of a rape victim, in addition to interviewing the person and treating any injuries, they will collect biological evidence including bodily fluids, skin cells and hair. This can include DNA samples from the victim, not just the perpetrator. According to District Attorney Chesa Boudin, San Francisco Police Departments’ crime lab has been entering victims’ DNA into a database law enforcement uses to identify possible suspects. In the latest in a series of disagreements between the Da and the police, Boudin has condemned...
