- Attended Brow of the Hill Christian Brothers Technical School in Derry City, which he left at age 15 without qualifications.
- Was Minister for Education in the recently suspended Northern Ireland Stormont Parliament.
- Twice elected (so far) abstentionist M.P. for nationalist-majority Mid-Ulster in the British House of Commons.
- Arrested and imprisoned for six months in Dublin on suspicion of IRA membership in the 1970s.
- At his death on March 21, 2017 he was survived by his wife, Bernadette, two daughters and two sons.
