On one hand, you had the dynamic Danny Sharp in Michael Bay’s Ambulance, but on the other hand was his brother Will Sharp, who had his own story. Without the yin-yang of the two characters, the film wouldn’t be the least bit emotionally engaging. If Danny was like a volatile robber with a streak of childlike enthusiasm, Will was a family man with a strong sense of ethical boundaries. He was willing to cross them for his family, but it had its limits. The performance by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is sincere. He isn’t as good as Gyllenhaal, but considering he has been around for just about five years in the industry as compared to Gyllenhaal, who has mastered his craft over 25 years, Yahya manages to go toe-to-toe with him, trying to make every scene work. Let’s take a closer look at his character.

There is not too much depth in Michael Bay’s characters. They act more like devices in his universe, which is brought to us through interesting yet absurd camera movements, prolonged action sequences, and an overall chaotic environment. What Bay hopes for, I think, is that before you can evaluate whether you are actually engaged or not in the story, the jarring soundtrack and the action sequences will have managed to suck you in. He isn’t totally wrong. The slick camera moves are engaging, but they have never made a movie memorable single-handedly. It’s the characters and the story that do that, and Bay just doesn’t seem to care about all that stuff, to put it bluntly. Yet, in Ambulance, he has tried to make the most of Jake Gyllenhaal’s charisma to create a layered character, even though his backstory is presented through nothing more than...

It must be snowing in hell right now, because there’s a Michael Bay movie out and it’s a critical darling! Yes, that’s right, the filmmaker behind such dubious pop culture icons as the first five Transformers movies and Pearl Harbor has now, almost inexplicably, become one of the last men standing at the intersection of populism and auteur theory: a perpetually sunset-hued madman who beats on, boats against the current of modern, identity-less moviemaking.
Seriously, over the weekend one of the Ambulance TV spots (which Universal Pictures has opted to not officially share online) trumpeted, “Critics have always hated Michael Bay’s movies, but Ambulance has the best Rotten Tomatoes score of his career.”
And it’s true! Ambulance has a mixed-to-positive score of 68 percent as of press time, and one cannot help but wonder if that figure would be even higher if the movie came from...

"Ambulance" is another wild and entertaining Michael Bay movie. Following the success of other blockbusters like "Armageddon" and the "Transformer" movies, this 2022 film does what Bay movies do best: overwhelming set pieces and turbo-charged thrills. In the words of /Film's own Chris Evangelista, "Ambulance" is "one hell of a ride." And according to Bay himself, that chaos onscreen was matched by some mayhem behind-the-scenes — thanks to his dog, Nitro.
"Ambulance" is an action thriller film starring Jake Gyllenhaal as criminal Danny Sharp and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Will Sharp, a war veteran and Danny's adoptive brother. When Will's wife Amy (Moses Ingram) needs a surgery they...

In Michael Bay’s new action thriller “Ambulance,” Jake Gyllenhaal plays career criminal Danny Sharp. One of the highlights of the film is an intense stunt where Gyllenhaal hangs outside the door of the titular vehicle, shooting a gun while helicopters chase him, his adopted brother Will (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and their hostages — Emt Cam Thompson (Eiza González) and a patient — as they speed along the bank of the Los Angeles River.
At the film’s Los Angeles premiere on Monday night, Gyllenhaal revealed that the scene wasn’t in the original script. Instead, Bay came up with the idea the night of filming.
“I had no idea,” Gyllenhaal told Variety on the red carpet outside the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. “We were on our way home, Yahya was driving the ambulance. We were almost finished with our day, and we were driving to get back into our civilian clothes,...
