This year Netflix has been at record highs of the live-action manga adaptations’ success, as you can recall the mind-bending viewing numbers of the mixedly-received Avatar: The Last Airbender and Parasyte: The Grey, which gained a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. This trend was later continued by the top-tier City Hunter movie.
It seems that the platform isn’t going to leave the hype train, as it has just released another movie, based on a cultish manga series. It has already won the hearts of millions of people around the world, as well as the fifth place in Netflix’s global chart.
Set in the north of Hokkaido, the film tells the story of Sugimoto, a war veteran who finds himself in need of a large amount of money. He decides to get it by finding a hidden treasure mapped out on tattooed outlaws that escaped prison.

Considering the success of the homonymous, multi-awarded manga by Satoru Noda and the quality of the anime, one of the best series of the last few years, a live-action adaptation was bound to happen. The recent release on Netflix follows the first season of the manga and stays quite close to it.
As I wrote in the anime review, “Golden Kamuy” is a rather different shonen title, which stands out by focusing on an Ainu character, while highlighting the language, culture, and customs of the indigenous people, supervised by Hiroshi Nakagawa, an Ainu language linguist from Chiba University.

It’s quite telling when mediums like comics and manga, which are often neglected by highbrow literary types, can convey the plight of marginalized people with much sensibility and to a wider audience as compared to other mainstream, esteemed mediums. Mangaka Satoru Noda’s masterpiece, Golden Kamuy, a story that revolves majorly around the lives and culture of the Ainu people, the extremely persecuted indigenous tribespeople of Northern Japan, is among such brilliant examples. Simultaneously, the narrative presents a strong theme regarding the futility of war, its disastrous effects on the soldiers who are commoditized by the state, and the narrative treatment, which is a whacky yet brilliant mix of absurd humor and brutal, graphic violence. But the most memorable aspect, which truly makes Golden Kamuy a ground-breaking piece of literature, is the varied and unexpected ways it appeals to the humanity of the readers through its characters.
