Get ready to play a very different kind of Easter egg hunt with the new "Star Wars" series "The Acolyte" (watch the trailer here). Leslye Headland's upcoming series takes place 100 years before "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace," which should come as a soothing balm to those who've been waiting for the franchise to move far (far) away from the Skywalker Saga and explore other periods of "Star Wars" history in live-action. That being the case, the real test here won't be seeing how many references or nods to other "Star Wars" projects you can spot; it will be figuring out where you've previously seen the show's crackerjack actors.
With the exceptions of "The Matrix" icon Carrie-Anne Moss and up-and-coming whipper-snappers Amandla Stenberg ("Bodies Bodies Bodies") and Dafne Keen ("His Dark Materials"), much of the "Acolyte" cast is composed of "Hey, I know them!" type character actors.

“The Mandalorian” season three has been and gone quicker than you can say Grogu. The series will be looking to return to the Emmys this year after its first two seasons proved mighty popular with voters, landing an incredible 14 Emmy wins altogether as well as two Best Drama Series bids.
The show follows Pedro Pascal as the titular Mando, who searches for his place in the galaxy alongside his adoptive son Grogu, Aka Baby Yoda. Season three of the show widened the galaxy a little bit as Mando became involved in the Mandalorian uprising alongside Katee Sackhoff‘s Bo-Katan, who looked to reclaim her seat of power on the fallen planet of Mandalore, home of the Mandalorians.
Returning to the series was the ever-reliable Carl Weathers, who plays Mando’s ally Greef Karga. In this season, Greef has become a magistrate of Nevarro and rules with authority, clarity, and respect.

Walt Disney World's tremendously immersive (and pricey) Star Wars hotel is set to shut down this September after less than a year and a half in operation, according to Theme Park Insider. Galactic Starcruiser, which was less a hotel stay and more a three-day, two-night theme park experience complete with a personalized "Star Wars" storyline unfolding in real life, opened its doors in March 2022 near Epcot in Florida.
Unfortunately, though, the themed hotel's prohibitively high price tag earned about as much press as its apparently incredible accommodations and features, and the outlet reports that its doors will close at the end of September 2023. Disney didn't comment on the reasoning behind the experience's surprisingly quick demise, but did release the following statement, which was shared with Theme Park Insider:

This article contains spoilers for the season 3 finale of "The Mandalorian."
Talk about a glow-up. Season 3 of "The Mandalorian" has primarily concerned itself with exploring the eponymous group of castaways and their myriad cultural beliefs, from the significance of mythosaurs to earning the right to wield the Darksaber to the importance of reclaiming their lost home world of Mandalore. But despite being pushed to the background for several stretches of the season, our favorite Force-sensitive little miscreant has somehow managed to save one of the most surprising reveals of the finale for himself. (Check out /Film's recap by Bryan Young here.)
In the midst of the epic clash between Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Giancarlo Esposito's Moff Gideon, itself taking place amid the larger engagement of Imperial remnant forces against Bo-Katan's (Katee Sackhoff) united Mandalorian front, Grogu stole the show with some heroics of his own. First saving Mando from his Stormtrooper captors,...

Breaking news: another miniseries has turned out to be, well, a regular series. In a surprise announcement at Star Wars Celebration today, Dave Filoni announced that the initially limited series "Star Wars: Tales of The Jedi" is set to return for a second season on Disney+. /Film's team was on the ground at the event, where Filoni -- a major presence in the "Star Wars" streaming world and the creator of "Tales of the Jedi" -- ended a panel in celebration of "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" with the announcement.
"'Tales of the Jedi' was so fun the first time, I decided to do some more," Filoni told the crowd, to riotous applause. The news will surely excite fans of the acclaimed series, which /Film's Bryan Young called "a return to form for 'Star Wars' animation." This article discusses spoilers for the latest episode of "The Mandalorian." Read at your own risk. This is the way.
Yeah, yeah, the schmuck who caused a mini-firestorm for speaking out against our lord and savior Baby Yoda a little while back has returned to once again take that adorable little rodent's good name and drag it through the mud -- but stick with me here, because I promise this is more than just another hit piece.
To their credit, creator Jon Favreau and the rest of the talent behind "The Mandalorian" certainly know that the bond between Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu remains the heart and soul of the series ... but maybe that's not always been ideal. That mindset obviously explains why they decided to completely undo the somber ending of season 2, which split apart our lovable pair and left heartbroken viewers wondering how (or even if) they'd ever reunite again.

This post contains spoilers for "The Mandalorian" season 3, episode 3, "The Convert."
"Star Wars" can't help but serve as a mirror for the world. Sometimes it's deliberate, like when George Lucas wrote "A New Hope" as a response to Richard Nixon's presidency and the Vietnam War. Other times, a galaxy far, far away is ahead of the curve, like when Lucas was writing his prequel trilogy about the rise of the Galactic Empire, unaware that 9/11, the War on Terror, and the Patriot Act were all right around the corner.
More recently, the Disney+ TV shows "Andor" and "The Bad Batch" have picked up the baton, drawing clear parallels between life under the Empire and neofascism in the 21st century. By comparison, "The Mandalorian" takes place five years after the Empire's fall and examines how societies rebuild themselves in the aftermath of war. In the season 3 premiere, we saw that the...

This post contains spoilers for "The Mandalorian" season 3, episode 1 "The Apostate."
Seventeen chapters in, "The Mandalorian" continues to serve up plenty of classic film homages. The most overt one in the season 3 premiere, "Chapter 17: The Apostate," sees the torso of the assassin droid Ig-11 dragging itself across the floor while droning, "Terminate asset," in a clear homage to James Cameron's "The Terminator." However, "if I visit the planet and can bring you proof that I have bathed in the living waters beneath the mines of Mandalore," would you believe there's another homage to Sergio Leone's influential spaghetti westerns in this episode?
Since before "The Mandalorian" even premiered on Disney+ back in November 2019, we've been hearing that Pedro Pascal's title character was inspired by the Man with No Name, played by Clint Eastwood in Leone's Dollars Trilogy. In a panel at "Star Wars" Celebration in April 2019, where...

A lot can happen between seasons of a "Star Wars" television show. In the season 3 premiere of "The Mandalorian" (you can read /Film's recap of "The Apostate" by Bryan Young here), we check in on several characters who've changed considerably in the time since we last saw them. Carl Weathers' Greef High Magistrate Karga has established himself as the de facto leader of Nevarro, overseeing a "construction boom" bringing in all sorts of riches to the once-desolate planet. Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff), on the other hand, has regressed considerably since losing her prized Darksaber and, subsequently, the ability to command fellow Mandalorians in battle.
And then there's Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and that little scamp Grogu, both of whom are in a very different place since they last appeared in "The Mandalorian." Remember when season 2 concluded with the tearful parting between Mando and Baby Yoda? A moment infused with such...

If one were to read George Lucas' original 1974 script draft for "Star Wars: A New Hope," entitled "The Star Wars," without any context, one would be forgiven for assuming they had stumbled upon the script for a weird, bootlegged ripoff of Lucas' 1977 classic. The script speaks of "Jedi Bendu," referring to them as "the most feared warriors in the universe," and features an 18-year-old boy named Annikin Starkiller. Other key characters include the "large," grizzled General Luke Skywalker and a "huge," green-skinned non-human named Han Solo.
Major elements of "The Star Wars" would be dropped entirely in later drafts, with many of them eventually being re-imagined for future "Star Wars" projects. "Bendu," for example, is the name of the mystical entity that exists between the light and dark sides of the Force in the animated series "Star Wars Rebels." By the time he got to his fourth script draft, entitled...

The Pitch: It has come to this author's attention that "Tales of the Jedi" -- an animated six-part miniseries that Bryan Young reviewed for /Film -- is being propped up by certain individuals as "Star Wars" done "correctly." Those same people are also taking umbrage with the live-action series "Andor," arguing that it strays too far from George Lucas' original vision of a galaxy far, far away.
There is, of course, nothing wrong with preferring "Tales of the Jedi" to "Andor." Nor is it wrong to argue the former is better executed than the latter in terms of its writing and craft. But to insist that "Star Wars...

The Pitch: You've seen "Star Wars" as a space opera, founded on "A New Hope." Here's what it looks like as a dystopian, sci-fi, prison work culture.
As the umpteenth "Andor" article on the interweb since the show's premiere, you have no reason to read this, and the recent episode title, "Nobody's Listening," has already prepared this writer for the likelihood that any further thoughts will — as the warden of Shawshank State Prison once put it — quickly up and vanish "like a fart in the wind." But I'm going to go ahead and load them up in a pneumatic tube, anyway, and send it along like a message in a bottle from a watery space prison.

Netflix officially pulled the plug on Fate: The Winx Saga after two seasons earlier this week.
However, the franchise may not be dead yet.
Winx franchise creator Iginio Straffi revealed this week that the Netflix cancellation "is for a bigger reason."
“Fate has been an exciting adventure, a great achievement, and a hit watched by millions globally, re-confirming the power of the Winx world,” Straffi shared on Instagram.
“I am working on many exciting Winx projects in the near future, some of which I take so much joy in sharing with you.”
One of those projects is a "brand new CG Winx animated series reboot," which is set to go into production soon.
The creator promises the show will "sweep you back to the Winx world."
If that wasn't enough Winx goodness, Straffi said that a "big budget Winx movie" is in the works.

A blood-curdling torture sequence. Continued commentary on authoritarianism and the prison industrial complex. Some of the most unflinchingly honest depictions of faceless figures getting crushed under the machinery of a relentless Empire. It's not likely that anyone initially expected "Andor," a prequel/spin-off series of the crowd-pleasing "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," to go this hard on some downright revolutionary subject matter, especially for a franchise now owned by the biggest entertainment empire of them all. And yet, it feels refreshing that creator Tony Gilroy did anyway.
Picking up right where last week's episode left off, episode 9 further explored the dire circumstances that Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and his fellow inmates at the Imperial prison find themselves in. Hunted by the Empire for his Rebel activity but imprisoned for an altogether imagined (and far more petty) crime, Cassian spends...

Netflix will not be returning to the Otherworld.
The streamer has canceled its teen drama series Fate: The Winx Saga after two seasons. Developer and showrunner Bryan Young announced the cancellation in an Instagram post Tuesday.
“This is not fun news to share, but Netflix have decided not to move forward with season three of Fate: The Winx Saga,” Young wrote. “This is especially tough because I know how many of you loved this season. It’s a heartbreaking silver lining, but a silver lining all the same.”
Based on the Nickelodeon animated series Winx Club, Fate tells the story of Bloom (Abigail Cowen), a fairy raised by human parents who enrolls at a boarding school for other fairies, begins to learn about her past, and confronts a threat to both the magical Otherworld and her earthly home.

Spoilers for the latest episode of "Andor" will follow.
In the weeks since "Andor" arrived on the scene, it has proven itself to have absolutely zero interest in cameos, references, or Easter eggs just for the sake of them. This radical, novel idea to put story and character above shared universe connections — in case it's not clear, please note the sarcasm dripping from that sentence — puts the prequel series in a league of its own compared to other "Star Wars" media in recent years. As surface-level enjoyable as they might be, shows like "The Mandalorian" and "The Book of Boba Fett" increasingly seem to exist solely to activate the pleasure centers of fanboy brains, digitally de-aging actors for off-putting and distracting appearances, or turning a standalone story into a semi-sequel to a much more popular series for kicks.

This post contains spoilers for "Andor" episode six.
George Lucas' "Star Wars: A New Hope" is unusual in that it both is and isn't an outlier among other famous 1970s films. Between the Vietnam War, the Watergate scandal, and the decline of the Civil Rights Movement (among other types of social reform activism in the '60s), the '70s was a period of distrust and cynicism. This manifested itself in the cinema of the decade, from paranoid thrillers — be they of the true-story ("All the President's Men"), pulpy ("Marathon Man"), or sci-fi variety (Lucas' own "Thx 1138") — to the gritty character dramas of Sidney Lumet and Martin Scorsese.
"Andor," as /Film's Bryan Young has observed, has more in common with '70s movies like "Taxi Driver" than even Lucas' original vision for "Star Wars." In "A New Hope," the characters are squarely divided into good people and bad people, save...

After Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker arrived last month, this week appeared to bring confirmation that long-running character Nien Nunb had met his end in Episode IX. The diminutive alien rebel pilot first appeared in Return of the Jedi before turning up in each of the Sequel Trilogy movies. But a brief scene in Rise‘s third act seemed to point to him meeting an untimely end off screen. Or so we thought.
First of all, fan/writer Bryan Young shared a post in honor of Nunb on Twitter. His belief that the character had died was supported by Rae Carson, author of the upcoming Rise of Skywalker Expanded Edition novelization. However, now another source even closer to the production is disputing Nunb’s death as fact, claiming that there’s evidence in the film proving he survived that we all missed.

It’s already been one year since Solo: A Star Wars Story was released in theaters. Or at least it will be after this weekend.
The film, having failed to reach $400 million at the box office and receiving mixed reviews, was considered a flop, at least by Star Wars standards.
However, perhaps the most damning consequence of the Ron Howard picture is the sudden cessation of standalone anthology films. Many, including series icon Mark Hamill, perceived this movie to be one of the leading causes behind “Star Wars fatigue.”
With that said, Solo fans have flocked onto Twitter today in support of a potential, but certainly unconfirmed, sequel. In fact, #MakeSolo2Happen is currently trending, and you can check out some of the tweets below.
Today is the anniversary of @RealRonHoward's Solo picture. It was a great film and deserves a sequel. What do we need to do to #MakeSolo2Happen?...

You may have heard reports lately of Captain Marvel’s Rotten Tomatoes page being flooded with negative comments in a coordinated effort to reduce the film’s audience approval score. Given that the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy is an even touchier subject online than the upcoming Marvel movie, it was to be expected that Star Wars: Episode IX would get the same treatment, but what was less predictable is that the Rotten Tomatoes backlash would start almost ten months prior to the pic’s release.
Within a suspiciously short period of time, the number of negative comments on the page for J.J. Abrams’ trilogy-closer has multiplied several-fold, while Star Wars blogger Bryan Young has observed that the film’s “Want to See” score dropped by 5% in a single day. Seeing how this score is based on over 5,000 ratings, we can conclude that either a whole load of people suddenly got...

Solo: A Star Wars Story premiered last night and the initial reactions have flooded social media! In case you're wondering what people thought, for the most part, it sounds like Star Wars fans are going to enjoy it! The movie received a good amount of high praise from those who had a chance to see. There are a few people that did have issues with it, but some things that almost everyone agrees on is that the movie is a blast and Donald Glover as Han Solo is one of the best parts of the film. There are even some people who praise Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, which is great to hear! A lot of people were worried about his portrayal of the iconic character.
I'm actually going to see the movie later tonight and after reading all of this great buzz, I'm pretty stoked! I'm just a huge Star Wars fan.

Most fans still have to wait another two weeks to see “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” but those lucky enough to attend the Hollywood premiere Thursday night are sharing their thoughts. The verdict: “Solo” is a great intergalactic heist movie, and star Alden Ehrenreich is fully capable of filling Harrison Ford’s Han Solo boots.
Also, Donald Glover is phenomenal as Lando Calrissian.
The prequel to 1977’s “Star Wars: A New Hope” delves into the early life of everybody’s favorite scoundrel, Han Solo (played originally by Ford and here by Ehrenreich). We all know Han as the best smuggler around, working for Jabba the Hutt on Tatooine with his best bud, walking carpet wookiee warrior Chewbacca, and flying the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy, the Millennium Falcon.
Before he was all that — as well as a general fighting or the Rebellion, Luke Skywalker’s best friend and Leia Organa’s paramour — Han was a nobody. “Solo” finds him gaining his best friend and his ship, filling in a piece of “Star Wars” history that’s been alluded to but never seen: Han winning the Millennium Falcon from Lando.

“Solo” hasn’t had the easiest time making it to the screen, though. Lucasfilm originally hired “The Lego Movie” directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller to helm the movie, signaling that it’s more of a comedy than previous “Star Wars” movies have been. Lucasfilm fired the two directors, however, reportedly after their creative vision clashed with that of screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan and his son and co-writer, Jason Kasdan.
Ron Howard picked up the baton for “Solo,” finishing the movie and reshooting much of it — reportedly, as much as 70 percent of the movie is now made up of reshoots, giving “Solo” a different feel from the original cut. But folks at the premiere found it to be emotional, exciting and the most action-packed of any “Star Wars” movie.
Read the reactions below.
#SoloAStarWarsStory: It takes a bit for it to find its feet and for Ae to turn on enough charm to make you forget he’s not Hf. But once it kicks into its hey-let’s-make-a-crew and yes-also-do-a-heist stuff, it totally flies.

I figured if @DisneyStudios was willing to show 'Solo: A Star Wars Story' a few weeks before release it must be good and it absolutely is. Film is a blast and a welcome addition to the Star Wars universe. @RealRonHoward you did a great job. Congrats. pic.twitter.com/1pkWH2y6qE

#Solo is a ton of fun! Alden Ehrenreich is full of charm and definitely does right by Harrison Ford. Not to mention Donald Glover, who's equally great as Lando.

#SoloAStarWarsStory is reaaaaalllly good. Fun as hell. It’s a straight intergalactic heist movie, kind of refreshing to see a Star Wars movie w/o a Death Star or the rebellion’s fate at stake. Alden Ehrenreich is super impressive as Han, but L3 might be my favorite new character.
