The Movie: "Shrek the Musical"
Where You Can Stream It: Prime Video, YouTube
The Pitch: Full disclosure, I don't like "Shrek." The original 2001 film just never did it for me. Maybe it was the animation, maybe it was the aggressively anti-Disney overtones, maybe both. Eventually, DreamWorks won me over with "Shrek 2," which can only be described as a masterpiece, but that's not the second chance I want to talk about right now. We're here for "Shrek the Musical," a stage production that has no right being as good as it is, and how it got me invested in a smelly ogre's origin. The musical follows Shrek (Brian D'Arcy James) as he goes on a quest with Donkey (Daniel Breaker) to...

Al Roker is back on the Today show following his two-month absence due to health issues. Roker made his return Friday after being hospitalized in November due to blood clots in his lungs and leg, and again in December.
On Today, Roker’s co-hosts, Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb, were overjoyed to announce his return.
“I’m sorry but the tears are already flowing. Al Roker is back,” Guthrie said at the start of Friday’s show. “To say we have missed you doesn’t even describe it. We are nothing without you here.”
Roker came out onto the Studio 1A set, giving both Guthrie and Kotb hugs.
“The crew is weepy. The crowd outside, they’ve been bummed every day we’ve walked out there. They’re like, ‘Where is Al?'” Kotb quipped.
As for the 68-year-old weatherman, he was back to his usual antics, telling his co-hosts,...

Calling Dr. Mark Greene. Please report to the Broadway stage.
ER star Anthony Edwards made his Broadway musical debut Friday night as “Dr. Walker” in the Tony-nominated Girl From The North Country. With several members of the company out of the show because of Covid-19 infections, Edwards stepped in at the last moment (and after only an hour of rehearsal time) to ensure that the show would go on.
He starred opposite his wife, Mare Winningham, who was recently nominated for a Tony Award for her role.
Lead producer of Girl From The North Country Tristan Baker made a pre-show announcement to express his gratitude to the production’s swings and understudies, and let the house know they were in for an extra special show. Baker asked if “There was a doctor in the house” to play the role of Dr. Walker this evening, before surprising the audience with the...

The acclaimed Bob Dylan musical Girl From The North Country will play its final Broadway performance at The Belasco Theatre on Jan. 23, with producers saying they’re in advanced conversations with the Shubert Organization to re-open in the spring after the Omicron surge subsides.
The unusual announcement follows a similar plan confirmed by producers of Mrs. Doubtfire, which closed on Jan. 10 with the intention of returning to the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on March 14.
“Girl From The North Country is an important part of this season,” said Robert E. Wankel, Chairman and CEO of The Shubert Organization, in a statement. “We have always been supportive of this show, and we are excited about bringing it to another theater in the spring.”

Hadestown and Girl From The North Country announced their Broadway returns today, with the Tony Award-winning musical Hadestown set to become the first production to resume performances on Broadway when its curtain rises on Thursday, Sept. 2.
Girl From The North Country, the musical that features songs from Bob Dylan’s catalogue, will resume performances on Wednesday, Oct. 13.
The Hadestown re-launch will mark the first Broadway production to begin performances since the March 12, 2020, pandemic shutdown. New York Gov. A spokesperson for Hadestown said the early relaunch is due to the timing of the Hadestown touring production schedule:...

Tween studio Brat has taken the lid off its first original series for Facebook Watch, Turnt.
The company briefly teased Turnt when it announced that it had raised $30 million in fresh funding last week from Anchorage Capital and others. Turnt will skew more mature than Brat’s previous programming, which is perhaps typified by its popular Chicken Girls franchise starring 13-year-old digital influencer Annie LeBlanc.
Starring newcomers Madeleine Byrne, Elsie Hewitt, and YouNow-slash-Musical.ly star Cristian Oliveras, Turnt is a 40-epsiode teen soap following an ensemble cast as they navigate the travails of high school after a scandalous hookup leads to bad trips, budding romance, and secret sex. The series will premiere on Aug. 1 with a four-episode drop, per The Hollywood Reporter, with three additional installments arriving every week thereafter. The series was created by Rachel Stern, while Will Slocome (The Escort) will direct. Brat co-founder Rob Fishman calls the series “provocative and timely.
