Dwayne Johnson, known for his charismatic screen presence, has recently confirmed his involvement in the live-action remake of Disney’s “Moana.” He joyfully announced his return as the voice of Maui, a character he originally brought to life in the 2016 animated hit. This announcement, made during an episode of “The Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon, was celebrated with an impromptu rendition of the song “You’re Welcome,” a fan favorite from the original film.
The upcoming film, set for release on June 27, 2025, marks a significant milestone in Disney’s history. It represents the shortest gap between an original animated film and its live-action remake, with just nine years separating the two. This adaptation is not only the first from Disney’s Revival era to be transformed into live action but also the first 3D animated film to receive such treatment.
Behind the scenes, the project is shaping up to be a collaborative reunion.

Encanto became a success story for Disney and although there have been hints of the possibility of a sequel, nothing has been confirmed yet.
In a recent interview, producer Yvett Merino hinted that Disney is working on ways to “expand across the company.”
“There’s different—we’re working closely with our friends in publishing and consumer products to make sure—there’s always different ideas and needs and wants for, for it to stay alive out there,” Merino said in an interview with The Direct. “But I don’t have anything official to say, but I love the ‘Encanto’ world and can’t wait to see it expand across the company.”
Although Merino didn’t delve into the idea of a direct sequel to the animated film, she did say that the parent company wants to keep the world of Encanto alive.
“I think we will continue to work on what that actually means.

Since “Encanto” made its theatrical and streaming debut in 2021, fans have been wondering whether Disney would give the film the sequel treatment – and its star Stephanie Beatriz has expressed her openness to the possibility should the opportunity arise.
“I would love to work with them again. That team on that film was so incredible to work with that. I think a lot of [Jared Bush and Byron Howard’s] time right now is being taken up by other stuff,” she told TheWrap during an interview conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike about her new Peacock series “Twisted Metal.” “I know Jared and I think Bryon too are working on the second ‘Zootopia’ right now. But I would love to work with them again.”
She noted that she is a “huge” Disney fan.
“I go to the parks a lot and whenever people recognize me they ask about that too.

In case the box office returns for director Rob Marshall's "The Little Mermaid" this weekend didn't tip you off, Disney is nowhere near done remaking its animated features as live-action/CGI films. Personally, I'm just hoping we get a live-action "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" or a "The Black Cauldron" remake that does proper justice to Lloyd Alexander's "The Chronicles of Prydain." To be clear, I'm in no way advocating for Disney to keep churning out these live-action remakes. But seeing as they're clearly not going to stop doing that anytime soon, we might as well try and get something interesting and unexpected out of this nonsense, right?

Back in April, we learned (via an announcement from Dwayne Johnson) that Disney was planning to add to its roster of live-action films adapted from its animated canon with Moana. Now we know that Hamilton director Thomas Kail will be calling the shots.
Confirmed today by The Hollywood Reporter but originally broken by scooper Daniel Richtman at his Patreon page, the news will mark Kail's narrative feature directorial debut.
Moana told the story of a young woman who disobeys her father, the chief of an island that is dealing with an impending ecological disaster and goes off on a quest to reunite a mystical relic with its owner, a goddess named Te Fiti. Along the way, she releases trickster demigod Maui (Johnson) from his island prison, is captured by a monstrous crab, and finds the strength to become the chief her father believed she could be.

“Moana” has found its director. Thomas Kail (“Hamilton”) has signed on to direct the live-action reimagining of Disney Animation’s 2016 musical hit, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
Dwayne Johnson will be reprising his role as demigod Maui for the reimagined version. Johnson previously revealed the news in a taped segment featured in Disney’s annual shareholder meeting.
Like its animated predecessor, the film will celebrate the communities and traditions of Pacific Islanders as seen through the eyes of a young woman eager to pave her own path. Disney has successfully mined its animated back catalogue for live-action (usually with CG elements) remakes for years now. But they're usually decades after the originals. With the announcement – originally courtesy of CEO Bob Iger to shareholders, but via The Rock for audiences — that 2016's Moana is joining the list – you have to wonder if the live-action version will be announced for the likes of say, the upcoming Wish a week after the original arrives.
It's early days for the new movie, but from the sounds of it, Dwayne Johnson will certainly be back as Maui. "I’m deeply humbled and overcome with gratitude to bring the beautiful story of Moana to the live-action big screen," he says in a statement. "This story is my culture, and this story is emblematic of our people’s grace and warrior strength. I wear this culture proudly on my skin and in my soul,...

If you thought Disney was slowing down with its live-action remakes of animated hits, you thought wrong. Instead, the Mouse House is putting its foot on the accelerator by announcing a live-action remake of "Moana," a mere six years and change after the original arrived in theaters. After winning Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media during the Grammys Premiere Ceremony, Franco stopped by the press room to take questions from reporters.
From the virtual media center, Showbiz asked Franco what encourgared to take on the project. It turns out one of the big draws to working on Encanto was the chance to collaborate with Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Disney's "Encanto" is a magical family film about the heavy weight of generational trauma set to an incredible soundtrack by the ever-present Lin-Manuel Miranda. Starring Stephanie Beatriz as Mirabel Madrigal, a young girl and the only modern member of her family who was denied a special ability by the magic house the Madrigals all live in, "Encanto" sees the character set out to unpack the emotional baggage that comes with forced family traditions. In doing so, she undoes the circumstances which caused her uncle, Bruno Madrigal (John Leguizamo), to become an outcast.
Except, Mirabel realizes that her missing uncle never really left ... he stayed close by so that he could feel connected to his high-strung family. Now, when we say "close by," what we really mean is "Bruno lived in the literal walls of his family home for 10 years with only rats for company." To pass the time, poor Bruno...

This story about “Andor” star Diego Luna first appeared in the Guild & Critics Awards / Documentaries issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
“Andor,” the latest Star Wars series for Disney+ and a prequel to 2016’s big screen spin-off “Rogue One,” feels unlike anything that has happened in a galaxy far, far away. It’s a methodical, intricate look at how one man, Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), becomes radicalized after a lifetime spent oppressed by systematically evil forces he once thought were too big to resist. His wins aren’t the flashiest and at the end of the first season he’s still a character in flux — but what an adventure and what a performance from Luna.
Luna, who also serves as an executive producer, had been on the project through earlier attempts at a streaming series from “The Americans” writer Stephen Schiff and “Encanto” director Jared Bush. But then “Michael Clayton” writer/director Tony Gilroy,...

“Andor” Episode 4 just debuted on Disney+ in the “Star Wars” series’ second week of release (the first three episodes were dropped on premiere day), and more than anything, this installment of the series cements that the new show is a very different approach to a galaxy far, far away. And that, according to showrunner Tony Gilroy, was entirely by design.
“Andor” follows the radicalization of Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), who we last saw giving his life for the nascent Rebellion in “Rogue One.” The show eschews the almost videogame-like plotting of Lucasfilm’s breakout series “The Mandalorian” for something grittier and earthier; textures feel tactile; characters feel troubled and broken, they look for their way and move in with their parents; dialogue is emphasized. It might be the best thing Disney+ has produced. And most of that has to do with one man: showrunner and creator Tony Gilroy.

Well… Oscar night 2022 was certainly one to remember. Many obituaries will have received their first lines last night, and there’s a few moments that will appear half way down for some of them.
But – here’s the good news: Sian Heder’s Coda won Best Picture, and genuine living legend Troy Kotsur took home the Best Supporting Actor award. It may have been a surprise for some, as Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog was hotly favoured. In the second piece of excellent news it was Campion herself who took home the Best Director gong, many would argue it’s long overdue.
Elsewhere Encanto, Will Smith, Jessica Chastain all took to the stage to collect their awards, and it’s pleasing to see another year when the awards were well spread out. It’s a sign of an industry in fine fettle, which is just as well given,...

Women at the 94th Academy Awards won 10 of the 43 individual Oscar statuettes handed out on Sunday night, the worst showing for female winners since the 2018 Academy Awards.
That’s 23% of the overall individual winners across the Oscars’ 23 competitive categories, bolstered by wins for Best Director Jane Campion, as well as others for Sian Heder for Best Adapted Screenplay and Billie Eilish for Best Original Song. This tally, however, does not include the International Feature category, which is awarded to the film’s country of origin — in this case, Japan for Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s “Drive My Car.”
That total was a drop from last year when we saw Chloé Zhao win Best Director for “Nomadland,” just the second woman to ever do so, as well as Emerald Fennell picking up Best Original Screenplay for “Promising Young Woman.” Their wins in 2021 helped women secure 17 wins out of 47 individual winners from the 23 competitive categories,...

Updated for March 15: The race has tightened with “The Mitchells vs. The Machines” winning best feature at the 49th annual Annie Awards on March 12. In fact, “The Mitchells” dominated with eight prizes, while “Encanto” earned three for character animation, music, and storyboarding. However, despite the impressive outpouring of support for “The Mitchells” by the animation community, “Encanto” has garnered too much adulation and buzz to be denied the Oscar this late in the season.
Updated for February 8: The Oscar nominations are out and Disney dominated with “Encanto” and “Raya and the Last Dragon,” and Pixar’s “Luca.” This marks the first time that Disney has had two in contention since 2016 and the first time it’s had three since 2012. The other two slots were taken by “The Mitchells vs. The Machines” (Netflix/Sony), and the acclaimed documentary “Flee” (Neon/Participant), which also scored historic noms in the doc and international categories.

The hustle and bustle of awards season is nearing an end, with Oscar voting getting underway on March 17. So naturally, every contender is looking to gain an advantage, and the BAFTA and Critics Choice ceremonies, which take place March 13, provide that opportunity.
At Cca, Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast” and Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” lead the tally with 11 nominations apiece, including best picture.
