A project nurtured over 12 long years and conceptualized by one of Bollywood’s premiere directors at the forefront of historical epics, which oftentimes are interwoven with enchanting Indian mythos of years past. Inspired by the Marathi novel ‘Rau’ by the late Nagnath S. Inamdar, Sanjay Bhansali brings to life this visually arresting story of a 18th century Peshwa (akin to a modern-day prime minister) Bajirao’s love triangle with a Muslim maiden Mastani and his wife Kashibai. ‘A will as immovable as the Himalayas’ leads the charge as this tragic saga unfolds, an allegory of intimacy, lust and passion set against the bubbling racial instability of the Hindu Maratha Empire.
Emperor Chhatrapati Shahu (Mahesh Manjrekar) is looking for the next Peshwa of the Maratha Empire. Before he could appoint one of his courtiers as the next leader, a defiant Bajirao Ballal (Ranveer Singh) barges into the court and challenges the man for the prestigious role.

Gangubai Kathiawadi
Music and directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali
A very young very pained girl face is being painted, prepared for something not very pleasant. She is grimacing and to add to her pain a firm hand holds her face, stuffs her mouth with a cloth and pierces her nose with something as sharp as the dialogues of this film. As she bleeds the blood mingles with her cheap makeup.
This opening sequence is like a piercing scream in the dark that sets the mood for a film that defies analysis. How do we describe what Sanjay Leela Bhansali has done with his Gangubai? And where are the words to reify the illimitable pain that Alia Bhatt’s eyes convey? She smiles, she laughs, she dances, she bullies her enemies and berates her friends… But her eyes remain ceaselessly swathed in sorrow.
I have never witnessed a performance more heroic...

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's last romantic periodic drama Bajirao Mastani went on to win the National Award. Now the filmmaker is all set for yet another epic story. Sanjay Leela Bhansali is all set to get the opera-ballad story of Padmavati to the big screen. The filmmaker who had once directed this tragic story of Padmavati at Paris' prestigious opera house, Theatre du Chatelet, has now been scripting the same into a film. Rani Padmini aka Padmavati, the queen of Merwar was known for her beauty. When the second ruler of Khilji dynasty, Alauddin put forward his request to meet the queen in person, despite it being against the rules for a Hindu queen, her husband and Raja Ratan Singh persuaded his wife Padmavati to meet him. Her beauty not only allured Allaudin but the Khilji ruler soon became so obsessed with her that he decided to wage a war against Ratan Singh.

The cinematically grandeur hall of fame that is known as the Sanjay Leela Bhansali epics has another film to its feature wall. The era, the costumes, the sets… everything is at the scale of the veteran filmmaker modus operandi. Yet there is something about Bajirao Mastani that doesn’t fall into the niche as perfectly as its predecessors. It isn’t that Bhansali isn’t appropriate as a director for the historical and politically enticing tale of forbidden love. But somewhere in the research for the costumes, dialect, history and big screen adaptation of Nagnath S Inamdar’s Marathi novel Rau, we have missing pieces that point back to the veteran and his writing team, which includes himself, Mallika Dutt Gharde and Prakash Kapadia.
The story of love that destroyed the lovers themselves but stood strong in their hearts is quite familiar to most. We have enough examples. Bajirao Mastani...

It seems every young actor is doing an accent. While Aditya Roy Kapoor had to work really hard on his Urdu diction in Habib Faisal's Daawat-e-Ishq, Ayushmann Khurrana and Sushant Singh Rajput have been practising their Marathi and Bangla for their respective characters in Vibhu Puri's Mumbaai Fairytale and Dibakar Bannerjee's Detective Byomkesh Bakshy respectively. Ranveer Singh who sported a dead-on Gujarati diction in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram Leela won't find it that easy to sail through the dialogues of Slb's historical Bajirao Mastani. The fastidious filmmaker and his dialogue writer Prakash Kapadia have decided to zeroin on a Marathi tutor for Ranveer to hone his Marathi skills. Says a source close to Sanjay Leela Bhansali, "Ranveer would have to get his language and diction completely right. The director doesn't want a hue and cry over the language being mis-pronounced. Ranveer is already familiar...
