The return of a familiar face, wistful memories of a European adventure, an emotionally loaded Italian dinner — yep, “nostalgia” was the magic word for many characters on Thursday’s Parenthood.
But did all those fond reminiscences end well? In some cases, yes. (Finally, Joel And Julia.) In others… well, let’s just say Jan. 8 can’t come soon enough.
Here’s how the evening played out for the Bravermans & Co. in this week’s fall finale:
Joel & Julia | Let’s start out with the no-longer-estranged couple, because their final scene in Thursday’s episode has legitimately put a bounce in my step.

He's ba-aaack! Rejoice Parenthood fans, Mark Cyr, played by the fantastic Jason Ritter, is back in Thursday's episode, and coming face-to-face with Sarah (Lauren Graham) for the first time since he told her he was engaged after she chose Hank (Ray Romano) over him. By her side when she runs into her ex? Hank, of course. But Hank's ex-wife Sandy, who has been around an awful lot lately, also happens to be standing by, and comments on "the hot English teacher" in our exclusive sneak peek at the Nov. 20 episode, "Lean In." "Are you waving to the hot English teacher?" Sandy asks Sarah as they are waiting for Ruby (Courtney Grosbeck) after the school play, and while Sarah...

A few months back, I chatted with a friend’s mom about Parenthood — well, more accurately, she asked what my favorite TV show currently was, and I went on a several-minute-long sales pitch for the NBC drama, because nothing is more enticing than the words, “You’ll cry at least once in every episode!”, right?
I recall this story because Thursday’s episode of Parenthood did the exact thing my friend’s mom said it did: It portrayed real life a little too well. In this week’s installment — the last before the Nov. 20 fall finale, which looks like a...

Looks like Parenthood is determined to not leave any stone unturned before it ends for good. E! News has confirmed that Jason Ritter will return once more for the final season of the NBC show to reprise his role of Mark Cyr, or Sarah's (Lauren Graham) former fiance. Ritter left the show at the end of season four when Mark and Sarah broke up over Sarah's relationship with Hank (Ray Romano). We last saw Mark when, in season 5, he met up with Sarah to inform her that he was now engaged to someone else. Mark's return could signal some much needed closure for the couple (and for fans of the couple), or it could bring some last minute drama into Hank and Sarah's world. We'll...

Though HBO’s Lena Dunham-led comedy series Girls won the Golden Globe for Best Comedy Series for its first season, the show has largely faded in the eyes of critics over time. Though the show’s third season was a marked improvement over its decidedly unfunny second, Girls hasn’t been seen as an awards darling since its premiere. Perhaps that will change next season, when Dunham and company are joined by some extremely talented guest stars. We previously reported that Community alum Gillian Jacobs would appear, and now Parenthood‘s Jason Ritter has booked a guest spot as well.
Details about Ritter’s character are being kept largely under wraps, as was the way with Jacobs’ character, but we do know that his character is named Scott and will appear on the currently unnamed sixth episode of Girls‘ fourth season. Unlike Jacobs’ character, named Mimi-Rose Howard, Ritter...

Sarah Braverman's relationship status has been complicated pretty much as long as Parenthood has been on the air.
Whether it's her on-and-off (and on-and-off) relationship with Mark Cyr (Jason Ritter), her messy work romance with Hank (Ray Romano), or her recent flirty fling with her neighbor Carl (Josh Stamberg), Sarah's love life has never been truly stable. But just when Sarah (Lauren Graham) seemed to be heading in the right direction — i.e. picking her work over a guy — Mark returns on Thursday's episode (10/9c, NBC) to shake things up again.

"Parenthood" isn't done with Mark Cyr just yet.
Jason Ritter will return to the NBC drama late in the season to reprise his role as Sarah's (Lauren Graham) ex-boyfriend, TVLine reports. He last appeared in the Season 4 finale, when Sarah had to make a choice between him and Hank (Ray Romano).
Ritter then went on to Fox's "Us & Them" opposite Graham's former TV daughter, Alexis Bledel. That show has wrapped filming after having its episode order cut, thus freeing him up to return to "Parenthood."
Mark will appear in the season's 19th episode, which will air in the spring. He comes back into the Bravermans' orbit via a chance meeting with one of the show's regulars -- whether that person is Sarah or someone else remains to be seen.

This week’s Parenthood finds Sarah and Hank inching closer to a reunion, while Adam and Kristina have an anti-meeting of the minds, and Ryan, Amber and Drew hilariously handle a problem dormmate.

Whether it’s “Budget Boy” Adam putting his foot down on Kristina’s campaign spending or Zeke full-on ignoring Camille’s pleas to discuss the next “act” of their love story, the typically accommodating other-halves are in rare form this week. Ray Romano is heading back to "Parenthood" for Season 5, Deadline reports.
According to the website, the "Everybody Loves Raymond" alum has closed a deal to return to the NBC drama as Sarah’s (Lauren Graham) boss-turned-boyfriend Hank Rizzoli, appearing in as many as 12-15 episodes.
Earlier this month at the Atx Television Festival in Austin, Texas, TVLine asked "Parenthood" executive producer David Hudgins if Romano could return for Season 5 of "Parenthood," considering the way Season 4 ended: Sarah chose Hank over her fiancé Mark Cyr (Jason Ritter), only to learn that Hank was moving away to Minnesota be closer to his daughter. Though he gave Sarah the option of coming with him, the Season 4 finale ended with the two going their separate ways. Of course, either one could have a change of heart come Season 5.

Exclusive: This is the news Parenthood fans had been waiting for — I’ve learned that Ray Romano has closed a deal to return to the quirky NBC dramedy next season, reprising his character as Sarah’s (Lauren Graham) boss/paramour Hank Rizzoli. I hear Romano will have a major presence, appearing in as many as 12-15 episodes, in line with the 14 episodes he did this season. Parenthood‘s recent fourth season finale threw Hank’s future into question when Sarah turned down her handsome young fiancé Mark Cyr (Jason Ritter) for Hank, only to learn that Hank was moving to Minnesota to be near his daughter. I hear Romano’s decision to return stems from the great relationship he’d developed with Parenthood developer/executive producer Jason Katims working on the show, something he had enjoyed since joining the cast at the beginning of last season. The underrated Parenthood, which...

This may not be great news for Team Mark Cyr, but it's definitely good news for Jason Ritter. He's signed on to star as Gavin in Fox's remake of British comedy "Gavin & Stacey." The Fox project, titled "Friends & Family," focuses on a couple who met over the internet and are about to go on their first date.
Ritter's character is described as "adorably neurotic" and "a good guy." Stacey has yet to be cast in the series, a single-camera comedy from writer David Rosen, Sony TV and BBC Worldwide Prods.
Of course, this means that Ritter may not return to "Parenthood" if it's picked up for Season 5. Unfortunately, his character split from Lauren Graham's last season and he was left out in the cold as she chose to be with Ray Romano's character instead. We are still not over it.

Despite the decent ratings for Parenthood Season 4 and the generally good press it receives, it's clear Jason Katims doesn't have high hopes for a season 5 pickup.
"Because You're My Sister" was about as close to a series finale as you could get without actually cancelling the show.
Because of the swiftness of pace and resolution-packed hour, there were some incredible scenes mixed with some that felt a bit rushed, as if giving fans closure to the Braverman family saga was more important than telling stories in the way we have become accustomed to: with care and precision.
The same could be said for the abortion story line between Drew and Amy on "Small Victories."
It seems now, looking back, that it was squished into the season for a specific purpose outside of anything to do with the tale of the Bravermans. Sarah was torn between two lovers and excited for...

Jason Ritter knows how to make the most of an opportunity. When the 32-year-old actor was invited to guest star on the first season of the NBC dramedy Parenthood, he was only supposed to appear in a three-episode arc as sexy, mild-mannered high school teacher Mark Cyr. Cut to Season 4: Ritter has an Emmy nomination under his belt, his character is engaged to fortysomething single mom Sarah (Lauren Graham) — age difference be damned — and he's even managed to wangle his way into the official family portrait. But all that could be at risk, thanks to the recent arrival of Sarah's new boss, Hank, played with crotchety magnetism by Ray Romano. Ritter opens up about his status as an almost-Braverman, life lessons from his late dad, John, and what's really beneath the nice-guy façade...

Well if you hadn't really heard of Homeland prior to this weekend, you probably have by now. The Showtime series pulled off a major upset at the 64th Annual Emmy Awards last night, winning a large chunk of the major awards in the Drama category over favourites like Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones. Claire Danes and Damian Lewis both took home awards for Lead Actress and Actor in a Drama Series, while the show also broke Mad Men's four-year win streak for Outstanding Drama Series. Elsewhere, Aaron Paul won his second Emmy for his supporting performance as Jesse Pinkman on Breaking Bad, while Julia Louis-Dreyfus won Best Lead Actress in a Comedy for Veep. Modern Family still took the Outstanding Comedy Series, however, while the HBO movie Game Change took the Outstanding Mini-Series or TV Movie. Kevin Costner did manage to pick up some...

Known for her portrayal of the strong-willed Amber on "Parenthood" and not-so-interesting Anne on "Arrested Development," Mae Whitman was always an impressive actress ... even at age two!
"My mom had an audition for a commercial when I was about two and a half, and I ran in crying and interrupted her," Whitman explained to The Gaming Liberty of her big break. "They thought I was cute so they offered me a commercial role. My mom was sceptical and a bit nervous about the child actor thing, but I was extremely bossy and convinced them I wanted to try it.
And ever since then, I’ve just felt really at home on a set, and it feels really second nature to me to play a zillion different people within one lifetime."

It’s that time of year again, and the fall television schedule is another trip into the wild. This is going to be an interesting fall, in part because last season had so many big efforts that didn’t go anywhere. You can see the wake of that effort in the listings, more as a matter of the absence of similar series.
Let’s take a look at what’s coming, and figure out just how much is worth watching, if anything is worth setting into your DVR, and how much of the week is going to be available for the cable networks to grab hold of you.
Sunday
Sunday has always been a strange night in the line-up, and we now see further evidence of each network trying to create their own niche, and get a stranglehold on their chosen demographic. It’s now a night that has pretty...

When Emmy nominations are announced, the conversation tends to turn immediately to those who were snubbed. This year, though, on Thursday morning when the Academy released its nominees list, there was a refreshing reason to celebrate: Jason Ritter snagged a first-time nomination for his guest-starring role as Mark Cyr on the criminally underrated "Parenthood."
Ritter tells Zap2it that, as a longtime part of the television community, he tends to be aware of Emmy nomination morning, mostly, he says, so that he can check on his friends and send congratulatory texts. Today, hough, he'd completely forgotten about the announcements -- which made for a rather unnerving morning.
"This is the first time that I've completely forgotten that it was this morning. There was no part of my brain that was like, 'Oh, someone's calling me at 6 a.m.! It might be that!' My first thought was that it was...

Parenthood already has one of the biggest casts on network TV, but it's ensemble just keeps growing. Last season added Adam and Kristina's baby daughter, Nora, and saw the return of Sarah's ex, Mark Cyr (Jason Ritter). For Season 4, which premieres on Sept. 11 at 10/9c, the NBC drama has added a few more fresh faces. There's Victor, Julia and Joel's adopted son and, of course, Emmy winner Ray Romano, who will play yet another love interest for the eldest Braverman daughter. "I've been talking to Ray a bunch about his character and he's really excited about doing it," executive producer Jason Katims tells TVGuide.com. "He's a fan."
But Sarah's complicated love life — including whether or not she accepted Mark's surprise proposal — is far from the only obstacle the Bravermans will face. Katims filled us in on Romano's "acerbic" new guy, Amber's promising new romance, Julia's tough juggling act and...

Ray Romano is coming back to the small screen. At least for a little while. The former "Everybody Loves Raymond" star has signed on for a multi-episode arc on the upcoming fourth season of the NBC drama "Parenthood," the network said Tuesday. Also read: Why Ray Romano Hates Sex Scenes Romano will play a photographer and former photo-journalist who becomes friends with Lauren Graham's character Sarah Braverman, and subsequently complicates her relationship with Mark Cyr (played by Jason Ritter). Romano's character will be introduced during the season premiere, which airs Sept. 11 at 10...

We still haven't heard from NBC as to whether or not "Parenthood" has been picked up for Season 4, but we've got our fingers and toes crossed and we're ready to start Twitter petitions should the need arise.
Though that's still in flux, we've got some good news for "Parenthood" fans -- Jason Ritter promises to return to the show as Mark Cyr, even though he's leading Jason Katims' new medical drama pilot, "County."
"People are going, 'Oh God, it's going to break them up!' I think the characters are so far in that relationship that you can't just end it abruptly, especially when I've just asked her to marry me," Ritter tells Vulture.
"It's not as if 'County' is a one-guy show -- it's about all six of us -- so I'll have time to run back and forth. So we'll see what happens. Whatever they choose,...

The on-again, off-again relationship between Sarah (Lauren Graham) and Mark Cyr (Jason Ritter) on Parenthood has weathered its share of challenges: their age difference, the fact that her daughter was his student. But the couple is about to weather their biggest test yet now that Sarah's ex-husband, Seth, is back in town and headed to rehab.
"There's this happiness that he's finally taking care of himself but it's very stressful for what it means for Mark and Sarah," Graham tells TVGuide.com. "It's a very jarring thing to have Seth in town at all and I think still new for Sarah to be juggling any relationship issues. She's been...

Just when it looked like things might work out for Sarah Braverman on Parenthood, her troubled ex-husband reappeared worse off than ever. How is Seth.s return going to affect Sarah.s relationship with hunky English teacher Mark Cyr? I spoke to Lauren Graham (Sarah) and Jason Ritter (Mark) about any potential conflict, their (fictional) wedding episode, and turning on the waterworks.

Season three of Parenthood has been all about new beginnings, but it was no more abundantly clear than last night, as Kristina gave birth to a baby girl named Nora with Crosby in the delivery room. Now's the time when things get more interesting, since a new baby will certainly have ramifications that affect the rest of the family as a whole and Nora was born to two tightly wound perfectionists that have barely been holding it together these days.
Now that Nora is in the picture, where do we go from here?

On Tuesday, Parenthood returned for its 16 episode third season with an episode that encapsulated all that is good about the show. After an extended hiatus, we were thrust back into the lives of the Braverman family, where Adam is thinking about a career change, Julia wants to adopt a baby from the coffee girl at work, Crosby still isn't over Jasmine, and Sarah's trying to come to terms with turning 40, losing her child, and reuniting with a former flame. Not to mention, we've already seen arrests, a dance party, and the emergence of Drunk Haddie, and it's only episode one.
With a series of new storylines opened up in "I Don't Want to Do This Without You", where could things go for Team Braverman?

Ausiello: That’s really none of your business, Carol. Just because I tweeted a private photo of myself lying in a hospital bed to more than a million people doesn’t give you the right to ask me such invasive questions. Now make yourself useful and buy me something off my get-well registry.

Based on one of the final frames of Season 2, showing Crosby (Dax Shepard) and Jasmine (Joy Bryant) talking and laughing together inside the house be bought specifically to win her back, you'd think a full-fledged reconciliation was imminent.
Not so fast.
"When we start this season, things have not worked out between them the way people might have thought from that image," executive producer Jason Katims tells TV Guide.
"They're not at war, but they're not together at the beginning of the season."
The decision to keep the pair apart for at least part of Season 3 stems from a desire to explore co-parenting when parents are not together, Katims says.
"We're always looking for new ways on the show to explore the kind of things that are relevant to parenthood today that we might not have explored," he says.
"We want to explore the idea of Jasmine and Crosby living separately,...

Jason Ritter is bouncing back after NBC cancelled it's sci-fi drama The Even, and has two roles lined up. THR reports that he is set to reprise his role as Mark Cyr, Sarah's (Lauren Graham) love interest and Amber's (Mae Whitman) teacher, for the upcoming third season of Parenthood.
In addition, Ritter will star in a new hourlong drama that is in the early stages of development from Jason Katims, Parenthood and Friday Night Lights showrunner. Details are very scarce on the project at this time. Production on the thrid season of Parenthood's starts on July 18, and returns at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 13.

This was an especially difficult episode of Parenthood to watch, given the subject matter of "Qualities and Difficulties."
Did anyone not get choked up when Kristina and Adam tried to define Asperger's to Max? Do you guys have Asperger's? Max asked his parents. Does Haddy? It was touching to see how badly Kristina and Adam didn't want Max to be negatively affected by this revelation.
For a little guidance, Adam and Kristina turned to Max's therapist, who handed them a script for an intro to Asperger's "do over." Adam was irate. He did the best he could to explain everything to Max, and now this professional tells him that it was done all wrong?!? "I'm not interested in memorizing a bunch of facts that have been polished up to make it look like he's won something," he bitched to Kristina.
Adam's frustration was building the entire episode, until Zeek pushed...
