The Argentina pavilion may be absent from the Cannes Croisette this year amid an ongoing national funding crisis, yet the head of the country’s film academy remained unbowed, declaring, “We are here for our industry.”
Academy president Hernán Findling said, “The Academy will defend and promote Argentinian cinema. We have a long tradition and we’re doing whatever we can to share how important our national industry is.”
Referring to the suspension of public film body Incaa, Academy vice president Sabrina Farji said, “We’re very worried because we don’t know how many films there will be here next year.

LONDON -- Central Europe's leading international film festival, Karlovy Vary, late Monday announced a wide and varied feature competition lineup for its upcoming 42nd edition.
Films from as far afield as South Korea (Min Boung-hun's "Pruning the Grapevine") and Norway ("The Art of Negative Thinking" by Bard Breien) will screen in the 14-strong lineup alongside films from nearer to home, including celebrated Czech filmmaker Jan Sverak's local hit "Empties".
Renee Zellweger will be in town to present the Beatrix Potter biopic "Miss Potter", in which she plays the early 20th century English children's writer and illustrator.
Other guests include U.S. indie filmmaking scion Hal Hartley, who will present the Czech premier of his film "Fay Grim", and Monte Hellman, who will screen his classic existential road movie "Two Lane Blacktop" in a retrospective dedicated to film from '70s-era "new Hollywood."
Other highlights at the festival, which runs June 29-July 7 in the Czech Republic Bohemia spa town from which it takes its name, include a documentary competition and East of the West, an Eastern European-focused competition sidebar with contenders that include Serbian director Srdan Golubovic's "The Trap", a Balkan take on Dostoevsky's "Crime and Punishment".
The full competition lineup includes: "Conversations With My Gardener" (France, director Jean Becker), "Dolina" (Hungary/Romania, Zoltan Kamondi), "The Good Night" (U.S./U.K., Jake Paltrow), "Jar City" (Iceland/Germany, Baltasar Kormakur), "Karger" (Germany, Elke Hauck), "Lucky Miles" (Australia, Michale James Rowland), "Pudor" (Spain, David and Tristan Ulloa), "Saturno Contro" (Italy/France/Turkey, Ferzan Ozpetek), "Savior's Square" (Poland, Joanna Koz-Krauze and Krzysztof Krauze), "Simple Things" (Russia, Alexei Popogrebsky) and "When She Jumped" (Argentina, Sabrina Farji).
