Last August, we heard that Imagine Entertainment had picked up the film rights to Daniel Kraus’s “swallowed by a whale” thriller novel Whalefall (you can buy a copy at This Link) and now Deadline has a cool update on the project: 20th Century Studios has come out the winner in a bidding war over the Whalefall theatrical distribution rights, and Brian Duffield – who recently worked with 20th Century on the alien invasion film No One Will Save You – has signed on to co-write, direct, and produce the film.
Duffield is working on the screenplay with Kraus, and here’s the story they’ll be bringing to the screen: Jay Gardiner has given himself a fool’s errand – to find the remains of his deceased father in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Monastery Beach. He knows it’s a long shot, but Jay feels it’s the only...

Exclusive: In a competitive situation with multiple studios bidding, 20th Century Studios has reeled in theatrical distribution rights to Imagine Entertainment’s thriller Whalefall, based on the recently published novel by bestseller Daniel Kraus.
Aboard to co-write, direct, and produce the film is Brian Duffield, who has a strong relationship with 20th President Steve Asbell and his team, following their work together on the acclaimed sci-fi thriller No One Will Save You. Imagine snapped the book up for development in a pre-emptive film rights deal last summer, as we were first to report.
Published last summer by MTV Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, Whalefall is described as The Martian meets 127 Hours. The book is about a scuba diver in search of his deceased father’s remains who gets swallowed by an eighty-foot, sixty-ton sperm whale and has only one hour to escape before his oxygen runs out. After giving up on life,...

Attica and Tembi Locke are re-teaming for another TV series.
The siblings, who already adapted Tembi’s memoir as the Netflix series From Scratch, have signed an overall deal with Universal Television and set up their first project under the pact: an adaptation of Attica’s novel Bluebird, Bluebird.
The drama, which does not yet have a network/platform attached, revolves around Darren Mathews, a Black Texas Ranger who is deeply ambivalent about growing up Black in the lone star state and was the first in his family to get as far away from Texas as he could — until duty called him home.
The Lockes will co-write and exec produce the series alongside Richard Abate, Jermaine Johnson and Will Rowbotham for 3 Arts Entertainment.
“From our first meeting with Universal Television, we felt instant creative alignment,” said Attica and Tembi Locke. “As authors, we understand storytelling across different formats and platforms.

Exclusive: Imagine Entertainment has struck a pre-emptive film rights deal for Whalefall, the next anticipated novel from best-selling author Daniel Kraus. The deal for the book option was reached ahead of its August 8 publication by MTV Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster.
Agreements of the sort are not frequently come upon these days, amid the SAG-AFTRA and the WGA strikes. The idea here is, of course, to develop Whalefall for the big screen, at the point when Hollywood is again back up and running. No development will be done and no writing services will be rendered here until new guild contracts are struck.
Already generating critical acclaim from early readers and immense buzz within the world of publishing, the book is described as The Martian meets 127 Hours. The story follows a scuba diver in search of his deceased father’s remains who gets swallowed by an 80-foot, 60-ton sperm...

Inspired by the New York Times bestselling memoir “From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily and Finding Home” by Tembi Locke, the adaptation’s eight hour-long episodes will premiere on the streamer Oct. 21.

While Tiff is more inclusive to programming them, Sundance is not one to shy away from anthology horror films of the V/H/S type, so perhaps they’ll be looking to get into the holiday spirit with horror comedy vignette package aptly called Holidays. Among the group of filmmakers contributing to the project Adam Egypt Mortimer (Some Kind of Hate), Dennis Widmyer (Starry Eyes), Anthony Scott Burns (Manifold), Matt Johnson (The Dirties), Kevin Kolsch (Starry Eyes), Nicholas McCarthy (The Pact), Gary Shore (Dracula Untold), Kevin Smith, Sarah Adina Smith (The Midnight Swim) and Scott Stewart (Priest) we do find former Sundance attendees. Announced in the trades back in February and saw this set-visit write-up in April, this divided up pie is likely ready to bang out some holiday cheer and easter egg hunt glee.

Just in time for Halloween! Independent Lit manager, Hollywood Hustler, and all around nice gal Miss Kailey Alexis Marsh has just dropped the annual Blood List!
The Blood List is the top 13 most liked, unproduced dark genre screenplays of the year, released annually on Halloween. This is the 5th anniversary. Over 100 feature film executives vote on their top 3 favorite dark genre (horror, sci-fi, thriller) screenplays of the year. Seventy-seven of them earned votes, with screenplays requiring a minimum of four votes in order to make the final cut. I’m looking forward to reading some of these. Patrol and Family Vacation seem to be scripts that are in my wheelhouse. Coming in at number one is Ink and Bone, Zak Olkewicz’s horror spec script about a writer held hostage by his own creations that Dimension purchased earlier this year according to Deadline. Meet the 2013 class of The Blood List:...

The micro-budget genre arm of Paramount Pictures, Paramount Insurge, is ready to begin its spate of projects, and word of another has just hit the wire. THR reports that Insurge Pictures is picking up Prism, a pitch from emerging writer Ian Fried, who has had two other scripts land on The Black List.
The project is being closely guarded by execs, but it is known to be in the low-budget sci-fi genre. It is thus fitting that John Davis, the veteran producer behind the low-budget sci-fi flick Chronicle, will produce Prism. Will Rowbotham and Caliber Media are executive producing.
It's unclear how Dread worthy this one will be, but we'll keep monitoring its progress nonetheless. Look for more - if need be - soon!

Will Rowbotham has joined Caliber Media as a manager in the company’s new New York office. If Sundance’s principle mission is to showcase future filmmaking talent, then they’ll probably want to stamp their film fest laurels on this French born, Filmmaker Magazine Top 25 New Faces (Summer ’12) talent’s debut pic with who many agree might be one of those helmers that moves from a curriculum vitae of eye-popping commercials and video clips (most notably Niggas in Paris) to getting tons of feature film offers after his first try. Alexandre Moors appears to have finished principle photography somewhere in 2011 – meaning that there may have been a lot of progress (2012 Independent Filmmaker Labs) since he gave us this early snippet. Loaded with faces we’ve seen at previous Sundance editions: Joey Lauren Adams, Tim Blake Nelson, Leo Fitzpatrick, and Isaiah Washington (who takes on the role of John Allen Muhammad) this should be positioned for the fest via the huge team of producers.

The 2011 Black List, the Top Unproduced Screenplays of the year has been released. The best unproduced screenplays from The Black List 2011 is compiled by votes from over 300 “execs, agency guys, and high-level assistants. Titled The Black List, the compendium highlights both established screenwriters and up-and-comers, and has served as a launching pad in the past for projects like Juno, Lars and the Real Girl, and (500) Days of Summer. Last year’s list included Margin Call, Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Hunger Games, and Snow White and the Huntsman.”
Regarding the validity of The Black List, things to keep in mind:
some of these screenplays have already been acquired and are already in development, though…none will have entered principal photography by December 31, 2011. Also worth pointing out is that, as in previous years, there have been rumors that some of the participants have been accused of using the Black List to promote their own clients or friends.
