It’s been four decades since Samantha Baker bemoaned the fact that everyone had forgotten her 16th birthday amid the chaos caused by her wacky sister’s impending nuptials. On May 4, 1984, “Sixteen Candles” was released, the success of which prompted a string of hits by filmmaker John Hughes, launched the careers of several performers and inspired the glory years of teen movies in the 1980s. Read on for more about the “Sixteen Candles” 40th anniversary.
After the success of two movies based on screenplays he had written, “Mr. Mom” and “National Lampoon’s Vacation” (1983), Hughes was given the opportunity to direct one of his scripts. Up to this point, “teen movies” had largely evolved from cautionary “rebellion” films in the 1950s to the beach party films of the 1960s to slasher films of the 1970s to sex comedies in the early 1980s. Hughes wrote a script that truly reflected the life of an average teen,...

Judy Blume never wanted her classic adolescent novel Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret turned into a film. The beloved author received numerous calls from Hollywood executives over the years asking for her blessing (and the rights). “Not every book has to be a movie,” the author said recently. “I just didn’t think it would ever be done in the way that I would have felt proud of.”
She makes a fair point. Blume’s novel — a modest story of a sixth grader who, on the cusp of puberty, finds herself talking with God — endures because it offers readers solace during a famously uncertain time. Puberty happens to everyone, but amid newly sprouting pimples and peculiar body odors one can suddenly feel desperately alone. An adaptation would be too easy to botch, could too easily shatter the magic Blume so carefully conjured. So, the writer gently turned...

Sonja Sohn will star as Amanda in “Will Trent,” ABC’s drama pilot adapted from Karin Slaughter’s book series of the same name.
“Will Trent” will star Ramón Rodríguez as Will Trent, a special agent of the Georgia Bureau of Investigations (Gbi) who was abandoned at birth and endured a harsh coming-of-age in Atlanta’s overwhelmed foster care system. But now, determined to use his unique point of view to make sure no one is abandoned like he was, Will Trent has the highest clearance rate in the Gbi.
Amanda is Will’s boss, the head of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. She’s coldly competent and always camera ready for a press conference. Climbing the ranks at the Gbi has made Amanda a real ball-buster, but she has a mysterious soft spot for Will.
Sohn is best known for starring in Kima Greggs in HBO’s “The Wire.

We can't believe it. They f-cking forgot Molly Ringwald's birthday! The '80s icon, who turned 54 on Feb. 18, recently shared an Instagram post of a text conversation revealing that her own mother forgot her birthday—which is pretty much exactly what happened to Molly's 16-year-old character Samantha Baker in the 1984 film Sixteen Candles. Molly texted her mom, "That's it? You don't have anything else to say to me today?" before she responded, "I didn't realize it was the 18th today. Happy birthday! I haven't got your present in the mail. Will do very soon." Noting the...

John Hughes’ breakthrough writing-directing hit still carries a glow that defuses its rougher edges, making it one of the best of ’80s Teen comedies. Even the savvy Soraya Roberts cuts it some slack, thanks to the authentic presence and fine performance of Molly Ringwald. Hughes’ amusing script comes up with at least ten moments that would have made Preston Sturges laugh, and his perfect casting for personalities young and old makes his direction look inspired. With great turns by Anthony Michael Hall, Haviland Morris, Debbie Pollack, Gedde Watanabe, Paul Dooley, and Michael Schoeffling.

” I want a serious girlfriend. Somebody I can love, that’s gonna love me back. Is that psycho?”
In his debut film as writer-director, John Hughes immediately cemented himself as the king of teen cinema with Sixteen Candles, and in the process also introduced one of the most iconic faces of 80s Americana: Molly Ringwald.
For high schooler Samantha Baker (Molly Ringwald), her 16th birthday might be the worst day of her life. Her entire family has forgotten about it due to her older sister s impending wedding; her biggest crush, high school hunk Jake Ryan (Michael Schoeffling) has discovered an embarrassing sex quiz filled out by Sam in which she details how she is saving herself for him; and to make matters worse, she is hounded by a relentless nerd (Anthony Michael Hall) who won t take no for an answer. More than 30 years after Brat Pack hit Sixteen Candles premiered in theaters, the film's star, Molly Ringwald, admitted there are some scenes in the movie that "bothered" her during shooting. In a candid new interview with NPR, the 50-year-old star opened up about certain plotlines that are especially problematic today in the wake of the #MeToo movement. For example, at one part in Sixteen Candles, Molly's character Samantha Baker's love interest, Jake Ryan (played by Michael Schoeffling), thinks about "violating" his unconscious girlfriend, Caroline. Later, Caroline also doesn't remember having sex with Anthony Michael Hall's character, Ted. (Photo Credit: R/R) "Everyone says and I do believe is true, that times were different and what was acceptable then is definitely not acceptable now and nor should it have been then, but that’s sort of the way that it was. I feel very differently about the movies now...

For those of you fans of The Goldbergs who were hoping to one day see a Sixteen Candles-themed episode, it looks like you will see that happen in Season 6!
The Goldbergs is one of those shows that just brings me so much nostalgic joy and happiness. I can relate to it so well because it reminds me a lot of what it was like for me growing up.
I'm also a big fan of John Hughes' and it's awesome to see the series pay tribute to another one of his classic films. The show previously had Weird Science and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off themed episodes.
Sixteen Candles follows Samantha Baker (Molly Ringwald) as she has a terrible birthday experience when everyone forgets that it's her birthday. This will happen to Adam Goldberg in the episode. Actor Sean Giambrone talked about the episode with /Film saying:

There's no way Sixteen Candles premiered nearly 34 years ago already! The iconic 1984 film starred actors including Molly Ringwald, Michael Shoeffling, Anthony Michael Hall, and more. And today, we're taking a look back at the fan-favorite film's cast then and now. (Photo Credit: R/R) The cast was apparently easy to choose for the film! According to La Magazine, writer John Hughes wrote the movie with Molly Ringwald in mind for the lead role of Samantha Baker. The same thing was true for Anthony Michael Hall — Hughes allegedly like him so much in National Lampoon’s Vacation that he wanted him to play the geek in Sixteen Candles. Since the the chemisty between all the stars in the movie was so strong, many fans today have high hopes for a sequel to the film that stole our hearts in the early '80s, however, it seems a second installment of the...

How is it 2018 and “Love, Simon” is the first major gay teen film from a studio? The film is at once groundbreaking and so long overdue that it’s embarrassing. For decades, teens have seen themselves on screen in characters such as Cady Heron, Kat Stratford, Lloyd Dobbler and Samantha Baker, and finally offering a gay lead character to stand among them is groundbreaking for teenagers who can identify with Simon Spier (Nick Robinson).

Even with a midseason return and a shorter run this time, Dana Delany is happy her latest series still has life.
It actually can be considered a new life, since the ABC medical mystery "Body of Proof" will reflect significant changes as its third season starts Tuesday, Feb. 19. Delany's Dr. Megan Hunt will be without several colleagues who were present from the show's start: Peter Dunlop (Nicholas Bishop), her investigator, who was stabbed by an enemy of Megan's in the Season 2 finale, and homicide detectives Bud Morris and Samantha Baker (John Carroll Lynch, Sonja Sohn).
Police work will remain a factor in "Body of Proof," though ... a bigger factor, in fact, given the main cast addition. Mark Valley ("Human Target," "Boston Legal") worked previously with Delany on the short-lived Fox serial "Pasadena," and their reunion makes him Tommy Sullivan, an investigator with whom Megan has a personal past -- a...

Actress Sarah Jane Morris played Julia Walker on Brothers & Sisters once upon a time, but her story continues as she signs on for a guest spot on ABC’s Body of Proof.
Body of Proof follows Dana Delany as medical examiner Dr. Megan Hunt, who was once a star neurosurgeon until a car accident ended her career. Season three kicks off in February of 2013 and in that season’s 12th episode, Sarah Jane Morris will appear as a flight attendant. TV Line reported that her character’s name is Pamela Jacks and she’ll become key in the aftermath of an “airline tragedy”. I wonder if this episode was at all inspired by the recent Denzel Washington film, Flight.

Responsible for pop-culture TV phenoms The Oc and Gossip Girl, writer Josh Schwartz knows a little something about dramatizing life as a teenager on screen. “The stories that I keep getting drawn back to are coming of age stories,” admits the 36-year-old. So it’s no surprise that his first big-screen outing would be the comedy Fun Size, opening today, about teen Wren (Victorious’s Victoria Justice) searching for her missing younger brother Albert (Jackson Nicoll) on Halloween night. Schwartz gave EW some of the comedy classics that inspired his directorial debut.

It’s nice to know that in 2012 a majority (if not all) of director John Hughes‘ movies still hold up very well, if not stronger than some of the teenage comedies/dramas that come out today. Hughes was a gifted filmmaker that had an eye for capturing that inner teenager in all of us. He understood the high school world unlike any other filmmaker alive and in Sixteen Candles he presents an innocent story about a girl and her birthday and just how much that event can shape that day and the rest of her life.
Samantha Baker (Molly Ringwald) is your everyday high school teenager. She has a crush on one of the more popular boys and she doesn’t stop talking about him to her closest friends. She also has a geek (Anthony Michael Hall) that follows her around all day, constantly begging her for a date or a moment of her attention.

Brat pack sweetheart Molly Ringwald talks about her new novel, jazz and her surreal life since the Breakfast Club days
Molly Ringwald peruses the rack of designer clothing pulled in as potential attire for her imminent photoshoot, noting to the photographer that she'd prefer to avoid anything that might come off as being "too glamorous". She immediately gravitates towards a lovely pink silk-shantung sweetheart-neckline number, reaching out to grab it.
"That one's really pretty," offers the stylist.
"But it's pink," murmurs Molly.
"Got it," the stylist smiles.
"No pink for you these days?" I ask.
"I've kind of had enough pink in my life," Molly deadpans, clacking the dress hanger down in the reject section without a second thought.
Everyone laughs, everyone gets it. That chapter has long since closed.
Many novelists might not mind an extra dose of glamour, and surely few would have such a knee-jerk aversion to...

"Body of Proof" fans successfully campaigned for ABC to renew the show for Season 3 -- but when it returns as a mid-season replacement at some point during the 2012-2013 television season, it's going to be a very different show.
As previously reported, three of the "Body of Proof" lead actors have been ousted. John Carroll Lynch, Nicholas Bishop and Sonja Sohn will not be returning for the third season, meaning that the majority of the detective power we're familiar with will be M.I.A. from the Philadelphia Homicide Division.
Of course, Bud Morris, Peter Dunlop, and Samantha Baker will be replaced. "Body of Proof" bosses are casting two new series regulars for Season 3. The first is Detective Tommy Sullivan, a former NYPD detective who has a romantic history with Megan (Dana Delaney) -- twenty years ago, they broke up after she caught him cheating on her. From the looks of it, the party at the center of "Project X" is an epic teen throwdown to rival the best of them. No wonder, since it's produced by "The Hangover" director Todd Phillips.
To mark this Friday's release of the sure-to-be raucous flick, we've weeded through some of our favorite party films of all time to pick the 13 best movie parties we wish we'd attended. From "Animal House"s' infamous toga party to Will Ferrell streaking at a Snoop Dogg concert in "Old School," one thing's for certain: These parties rocked.
If only life were more like the movies.
'National Lampoon’s Animal House': Toga Party
As anyone who's seen this raunchy classic from John Landis ("The Blues Brothers") can attest, "Animal House" has the most epic toga party ever committed to celluloid. That's no small feat, especially considering (get this) it was the first ever one put on film.

NBC and Fox have both unleashed their Fall 2011-2012 TV schedule, now ABC has released theirs. I’m excited to see Castle, Modern Family, and The Middle back in the mix. Most of the new shows they have line-up don’t really interest me, but there are a few that have caught my eye. PanAm is another 1960’s based TV show that will go against AMC’s Mad Men and NBC’s The Playboy Club. There’s a show called Revenge that sounds really interesting, but the new series I’m most excited about is is the fantasy series Once Upon A Time, a show where fairy tales collide with the modern day.
Here is ABC’s full schedule along with a description of all of their shows. Go through them below and let us know what TV series you’re most excited about seeing.

I'm not going to lie: it was hard to concentrate on this week's episode with Amy sulking around in that hideous sweater with the turtles on it. Paging The Cosby Show's wardrobe department! In all seriousness, she had some major problems in "Loose Lips," the least of which were her attire.
The dilemma of who's at fault, Adrian or Amy, is a lot like that of the chicken and the egg. Except in this case it's not who came first, but rather who offended the other first. My answer? Neither is intentionally at fault.
I don't think that Adrian paraded Ricky's old lovers in front Amy on purpose. I also don't think that Amy intended to rub it in Adrian's face that she has no friends. The bottom line is that if Adrian doesn't really have friends, there's a reason for that. Also, if Amy's going to get upset over her boyfriend's old lovers,...

An interracial couple is found dead in their car. Lovers who died where they met. Shot in the head. No witnesses.
Detective Morris believed it to be a simple murder-suicide. The man shot the woman before putting a bullet in his head. No medical mystery. Until Dr. Megan Hunt removed two bullets from the male victim, making it murder.
It was no mistake they got to work with Det. Morris and Det. Baker again. Dr. Kate Murphy (Jeri Ryan) requested it.
To get through the autopsy quickly and efficiently, Megan asked for Curtis' and Ethan's help, letting us get to know these characters better. As Curtis kept saying, working for Nancy Drew -- Dr. Hunt.
Curtis, who was her superior, was not so thrilled about being ordered around, insisting he will not approve any unnecessary tests. He still wants to be called a doctor. Megan wanted him to act like he gives a damn.

I have been looking forward to this. Just when the TV landscape has been speaking only to my short attention span recently, ABC offers up a familiar genre, I missed so much from the 80s, a juicy medical mystery, in the same vein of Quincy with heart. Although, I have not seen Dana Delany's other shows as much. She is one familiar face I love to see on television. And I wasn't disappointed.
The tagline:
Brilliant neurosurgeon Megan Hunt had it all, family and career, or so she thinks... until an accident killed her... career.
After a year as medical examiner, she still has to prove herself to her bosses and struggles to have a relationship with her twelve year old daughter, when her ex-husband got full custody.
In this episode, she is assigned the case of a drowning victim. What she finds out about the girl's life is what helped find her killer.

ABC's new crime drama, Body of Proof, asks a question that television shows have been trying to figure out for decades, usually without positive results - Can a really irritating, annoying bastard be the center of a show? This time around, perhaps softening the caustic nature of things (perhaps not), Dana Delaney is our obnoxious misanthrope du jour.
Dr. Megan Hunt (Delaney) was Head of Neurosurgery at a top Philadelphia hospital five years ago, but a car accident left her with a condition that causes her to lose full control of her hands. Dr. Megan Hunt (Delaney) was Head of Neurosurgery at a top Philadelphia hospital five years ago, but a car accident left her with a condition that causes her to lose full control of her hands. Still hoping to return to neurosurgery one day, and having lost custody of her daughter in the divorce, Dr. Hunt is... cranky.

In another case of finally using their bigger shows to boost the newbies, ABC is scheduled to air the second episode of the Dana Delaney procedural Body of Proof after a new episode of Desperate Housewives on April 3. The alphabet has sometimes been a little hesitant to rock the boat with their scheduling, but between this move, putting Mr. Sunshine behind Modern Family, and allowing the Off the Map premiere to get a second viewing post-Grey's, it seems that they're finally using their assets wisely. It's not been a great few seasons for new ABC dramas (in terms of ratings), so this move could help solidify Body of Proof into the next channel mainstay.

An all-grown-up Molly Ringwald was in attendance on Sunday as Lincoln Center paid tribute to the master of high school angst, John Hughes. Molly Ringwald and Michael Schoeffling in Sixteen Candles The Film Society of Lincoln Center put together John Hughes: We Can't Forget About Him, a one-day retrospective of five John Hughes movies that appealed to audiences of all ages. If you are a pop culture fan, grew up in the 80s/90s, and are a film buff, you recognize Hughes as the voice of a generation. As such, I jumped at the chance to see Sixteen Candles and Pretty in Pink on the big screen. For $12 each, they were better than any movie out today in substance, humor, and heart. Molly Ringwald as Samantha Baker in Sixteen Candles Sixteen Candles is still so endearing, with a touch of ridiculous that makes you laugh out loud. Molly Ringwald...

The teen comedy genre is a mixed bag, quality-wise. They can range from the brow-furrowingly stupid (ex. Gimme An 'F'), to the goofy but watchable (One Crazy Summer), to the cartoonish (American Pie, Porky's), to the timelessly good, even great (Can't Hardly Wait, The Sure Thing). But in a Tolkienesque world of one teen comedy to rule them all, the clear winner is Sixteen Candles.
Infinitely quotable, beloved across gender, social and taste lines, and featuring one of the finest casts of characters ever assembled, Sixteen Candles is one of my top three favorite movies of all time. I love it like a person. Hell, I love it like a dog. People have let me down. But Samantha Baker is always there for me, and long before Lloyd Dobler ruined me for good, Jake Ryan laid the groundwork for no man to ever come close.

Dana Delany left "Desperate Housewives" for her own starring gig on ABC's "Body of Proof," but will fans find her new pastures greener?
Disclaimer: These posts are not reviews -- shows often make tweaks to their pilot episodes between filming in the spring and their fall debuts. Full reviews will come closer to the premiere date.
What it is: ABC wants a bigger slice of the procedural pie, and "Body of Proof" might help. Equal parts police and medical drama, the pilot introduces us to Dr. Megan Hunt (Delany), a neurologist who becomes a Philadelphia medical examiner after a crippling car accident leaves her incapable of operating on the living. Her curt demeanor makes professional and personal interactions a bit difficult as well.
Who's making it: Relative TV newcomer Christopher Murphey penned the pilot, and he'll be producing along with "Dirty Sexy Money" and "Day Break" alum Matt Gross.

Earlier today, ABC announced its fall schedule for the upcoming 2010-2011 season and introduced several new shows. One of them is "Body of Proof", a new drama which will be airing on Friday nights at 9:00 p.m. The new series will star Dana Delaney (who recently starred on Desperate Housewives) as a neurosurgeon. ABC has released two clips for the upcoming series.
Dr. Megan Hunt (Dana Delany) was in a class of her own, a brilliant neurosurgeon at the top of her game. Her world is turned upside down when a devastating car accident puts an end to her time in the operating room. Megan resumes her career as a medical examiner determined to solve the puzzle of who or what killed the victims. Megan’s instincts are sharp, but she’s developed a reputation for graying the lines of where her job ends and where the police department’s begins.
