Perhaps no actor received a greater injection of exposure and career boost during the awards season just past than did Lily Gladstone, the Indigenous performer who won SAG Award and Golden Globe trophies along with an Oscar nomination for her standout performance in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.” While she lost the Academy Award for Best Actress to Emma Stone for “Poor Things,” Gladstone benefited tremendously, significantly elevating her stature after entering the campaign as a relative unknown. “I think I’m probably not going to fully metabolize it for years,” she says. “What’s cool is that you develop this camaraderie with people who are going through it with you, and there’s this collective relief when you get to see each other on the other side of it all. I was at the Met Gala last night with Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and we were...

Lily Gladstone wants to go "against the grain" by starring in an action film. The 37-year-old actress earned critical acclaim for her performance as Mollie Burkhart in Martin Scorsese's historical crime epic 'Killers of the Flower Moon' and is now determined to act in a range of different genres.Lily told Empire magazine: "I like black comedy. Before it's all over, it would be really fun to do an action film."I am having conversations about doing things that have some levity, because while I want my work to be meaningful, I really like getting creative and going against the grain."Gladstone became the first Native American star to be nominated for the Best Actress Oscar for her role in 'Killers of the Flower Moon' but insists that she doesn't want her identity to define the parts she gets. She said: "It's all of the...

Even starring amid the heavyweight likes of Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio, it’s undeniable: Killers Of The Flower Moon was Lily Gladstone’s film. Following her roles in Reservation Dogs and Kelly Reichardt’s First Cow, she went on to steal the show in Martin Scorsese’s take on the Osage murders, earning widespread plaudits (and an Oscar nomination) for her astonishing performance as Mollie Burkhart. And this is just the beginning for Gladstone. After her breakout role, she’s going big – and she’s ready to step into all kinds of different worlds and genres.
As she tells Empire in a major new interview, Gladstone has a wide spread of projects in the works. There’s an upcoming romcom, as well as dystopian sci-fi adaptation The Memory Police, scripted by Charlie Kaufman and to be directed by Reed Morano. The official trailer for Apple TV+’s Fancy Dance sees Lily Gladstone’s Jax on a mission to find her missing sister, as the risk of losing custody of her niece, Roki (Isabel Deroy-Olson), looms.
Following her sister’s disappearance, Jax and Roki have been scraping by on the Seneca-Cayuga reservation in Oklahoma, according to the film’s description. As Roki prepares for the upcoming powwow, the women hit the road to try to find Roki’s mother in time for the event.
“What begins as a search gradually turns into a far deeper investigation into the complexities and contradictions of Indigenous women moving through a colonized world while at the mercy of a failed justice system,” the logline reads.
Gladstone and Deroy-Olson star alongside Ryan Begay, Crystle Lightning, Audrey Wasilewski and Shea Whigham.
Fancy Dance premiered to critical acclaim at 2023’s Sundance Film Festival but didn’t receive distribution until over a year later.

Just before Killers of the Flower Moon set her on the path towards an Oscar nomination / robbery, Lily Gladstone debuted another film concerning conflicts between Indigenous and white communities. Erica Tremblay’s 2023 Sundance premiere Fancy Dance is arriving some 18 months later from Apple, who stream it on June 28, and with this comes a trailer.
As John Fink said in his review, “Fancy Dance is a rich character study that explores the contemporary impact of permanently marginalizing a community with limited options. Other communities and economies emerge and potentially entrap someone like Roki who, as a teen, tries reconciling a sense of foundation while having little to grab onto. Above all, this is a well-written drama that feels like an authentic, at times painful exploration of a community from a filmmaker that knows this place all too well.”

“Spa Night” and “Fire Island” filmmaker Andrew Ahn is set to direct Lily Gladstone and Bowen Yang in a new take on “The Wedding Banquet” that has been described as a “reimagination” of Ang Lee’s beloved 1993 film.
The new project, which was announced on Thursday by co-producers Bleecker Street and Shivhans Pictures and begins filming in May, is based on a new script by Ahn and frequent Lee collaborator James Schamus, who co-wrote the original film.
Lee’s “The Wedding Banquet” won the Golden Bear at the 1993 Berlin International Film Festival and helped cement his status as a notable figure in the global film community. The film stars Winston Chao as a gay Taiwanese man living in America who agrees to a marriage of convenience with a female friend, only to find his life complicated when his overbearing parents travel to America to plan his wedding banquet. Cillian Murphy capped off his domination of awards season by claiming the top acting prize for film on home soil.
The Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe and SAG award winner on Saturday night added perhaps a final statue to his flawless haul of honors for Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” when he was named best lead actor at the 21st Irish Film and TV Academy Awards.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we revisit the packed limited series race, which has seen three new contenders premiere in the last three weeks.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’ve circled back to what is arguably the most competitive Emmys category this year: limited series. It feels like as good a time as any to return to my favorite race – particularly with “Shōgun” and Anna Sawai dominating the discourse, as well as the premiere of our dark horse favorite “Under the Bridge.” We talked about both shows this week with our voices, and I must say, it feels heartening — dare I type, Siri pay “Vindicated” – to have been so right about “Shōgun.” We both loved that show way back in February and the response has been off the charts.

Kevin Costner is set to take on four different responsibilities this summer, as a director, co-writer, producer, and a leading star in his two-part theatrical franchise, Horizon: An American Saga. With the plot of the film series surrounding the American West during the Civil War period, Costner is once again set to appear in a Western drama.

When Quinn Shephard (indie hit “Blame” and internet satire “Not Okay”) set out to adapt Rebecca Godfrey’s bestselling narrative non-fiction book “Under the Bridge,” about the 1997 murder of teenager Reena Virk, one key aspect of the book stood out to her beyond the crime.
“I was so struck by how gentle [the book] was,” Shephard told IndieWire during a recent interview. “And there was a real sensitivity to the way that it approached the holistic story, as well as all of the characters. It was a very beautiful book; it was very poetic. I was really shocked that a story that was so dark and so brutal could have so much tenderness. [It’s] really a story of childhood and coming of age.”
Viewers of the eight-episode miniseries, which premiered on Hulu April 17, will quickly note the horror of a group of young teens in small town British Columbia murdering their classmate in a night of rage,...

A year and a half ago, Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough were still relative unknowns about to hit the big time when they were cast together in the eight-episode Hulu true-crime thriller “Under the Bridge.” Gladstone would steal the show in the Martin Scorsese epic “Killers of the Flower Moon,” earning an Oscar nomination and a SAG Award win. Keough, famously the eldest grandchild of Elvis Presley and Priscilla Presley, landed Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for her starring role in the Prime Video limited series “Daisy Jones and the Six.” In a Zoom interview this week for the “Under the Bridge” premiere on Hulu with its writer-creator Quinn Shephard and showrunner Samir Mehta, Mehta described landing Gladstone and Keough in the follow-up project to their big breakthrough as “literally kismet.”

Officer Cam Bentland, played by Lily Gladstone in Hulu’s eight-part crime drama “Under the Bridge,” is tired. Not tired in the way that a good nap can fix, nor is she merely bored of her job with the Saanich police. “Weary” would be a better word for the drained disposition with which she carries herself, whether she’s helping her father (and captain) hit the punching bag or listening to yet another complaint about wayward teens. It’s during the latter that something clicks. A girl is missing, and even though runaway high schoolers are a routine occurrence around the greater Victoria area, hearing her brother (also a cop) refer to the young woman as a “bic girl” sparks Cam to action. “Bic,” referencing the cheap lighters found on gas station counters, is local slang for recalcitrant teens who have no one looking out for them.

Based on the combined predictions of over 2,000 Gold Derby users, Lily Gladstone (“Under the Bridge”) and Walton Goggins (“Fallout”) are not generally expected to reap 2024 Emmy bids at this time. However, their chances of soon reaching predicted nominee status greatly improved over the past week thanks to their new category placements. The limited series actress’ odds jumped from 100/1 to 66/1 after she migrated from lead to supporting, while the dramatic actor went from 62/1 to 37/1 by making the opposite move.
Gladstone’s “Under the Bridge” cast mate, Riley Keough, joined her in switching from lead to supporting but still retains her original 100/1 odds. The other two performers who rose above their previous 100/1 odds this week are lead actress Julianne Moore (“Mary & George”) and featured actor Mark Ruffalo (“All the Light We Cannot See”), both of whom hail from limited series.
At this point, the non-continuing series races are proving to be the most dynamic ones overall.

Plot: based on acclaimed author Rebecca Godfrey’s book about the 1997 true story of fourteen-year-old Reena Virk who went to join friends at a party and never returned home. Through the eyes of Godfrey and a local police officer, the series takes us into the hidden world of the young girls accused of the murder — revealing startling truths about the unlikely killer.
Review: While crime exists worldwide, North America’s glut of true crime stories is centered on the United States. We often take for granted that our neighbors in the Great White North are more than America’s nice neighbors or denizens of the Fifty-First State. Canada is a massive country with its own good and bad, with crimes just as heinous as anything we see in America. While the events depicted in Under The Bridge are not as scary as serial killer tales, the story it retells is every bit as disturbing.

The star-studded casting of Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough in Hulu’s Under the Bridge, as it turns out, all started in the DMs.
The series, which counts Keough as an executive producer, is based on the true story of Reena Virk, a 14-year-old girl who was beaten and murdered by a group of teenagers in Canada in 1997. Keough stars as Rebecca Godfrey, who investigated and wrote a book on the tragedy, with Gladstone as a local police officer trying to solve the case.
At the show’s Los Angeles premiere on Monday, Gladstone recalled forming a bond with Keough in 2017 as they ran in the same Hollywood circles, when she was promoting Certain Women and the Daisy Jones & The Six star was releasing American Honey.
“I was aware of her work, anyway, but I feel like being in each other’s orbit then, I became very curious about who this talent was.

Deep into Hulu’s Under the Bridge, author Rebecca Godfrey (Riley Keough) defends the focus of her latest manuscript. “People can do horrible things, and that doesn’t make them inherently evil,” she insists. As she sees it, her book is simply challenging the reader to consider that an individual’s humanity is not defined by their worst deed.
It’s a big ask considering the subject in question has been charged with murder — but potentially a worthy one too, not least because the accused is just a teenager. Unfortunately, it’s also one Under the Bridge does not actually have the nerve to tackle head-on. Despite some moving performances (particularly from its young cast), the writing ultimately proves too vague and too muddled in its messaging to shed new light on much of anything.

Lily Gladstone, creator and EP Quinn Shephard and showrunner/executive producer Samir Mehta joined Deadline’s Contenders TV to discuss their Hulu series Under the Bridge. Based on Rebecca Godfrey’s account of the murder of Reena Virk, all three said they were careful not to sensationalize Virk’s death.
“A lot of times, the human element, particularly the people who suffered the most are the ones who get erased,” Gladstone said. “The thing that happened to them becomes a sensationalized thing for the media and then it becomes something for consumption.”
Gladstone added that her movie Killers of the Flower Moon, for which she was Oscar nominated, faced the same issue. She felt Martin Scorsese’s film was aware of this dynamic, indicting itself for making a work of art about a real-life tragedy, too.

This year’s races for Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress were over before they started. Robert Downey Jr. in “Oppenheimer” and Da’Vine Joy Randolph in “The Holdovers” took leads in the Gold Derby odds in their respective categories early in the season. They both went on to pick up Golden Globe, Critics Choice, BAFTA and SAG Awards. By the time the Oscars rolled around, there was a “near zero” chance of either of them losing.
In contrast, the lead acting contests provided considerably more suspense. Bradley Cooper in “Maestro,” Paul Giamatti in “The Holdovers” and Cillian Murphy in “Oppenheimer” were all looking strong at different point in the derby, before Murphy really exploded and ultimately won the Best Actor Oscar. Lily Gladstone is getting sent down “Under the Bridge” to see about this murder.
Gladstone is following up her Academy Award-nominated breakout performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon” with “Under the Bridge,” a Hulu limited series premiering April 17. Hulu released a trailer for the gloomy true crime drama on Monday.
The trailer, with its eerie score, dark dialogue about missing and murdered young women, and focus on an uneasy partnership between two investigators, feels like it could be part of the “True Detective” universe. Gladstone plays a local cop haunted by the unsolved murder of a teenage girl, and Riley Keough (who also serves as executive producer) plays a journalist writing a book on the case.
