French President Emmanuel Macron said the actor Gérard Depardieu — who’s faced an array of sexual assault allegations over the past few years — “makes France proud.”
According to the The New York Times, Macron appeared to defend Depardieu during a recent interview on French TV. The president said he was a “big admirer” of the “great actor,” and reiterated that anyone accused of something was innocent until proven otherwise: “You will never see me participate in a manhunt,” Macron said.

Putin vs the West is the latest series from the legendary Norma Percy, and the three-parter contains everything you’d expect from the veteran documentarian – the right blend of revelation, anecdote, history, drama, forensic analysis and storytelling. It’s Putin, the Ukraine war and how the West fouled up, all made comprehensible. It’s brilliant, and you have to watch it to understand how we got to where we are now.
It is in fact so brilliant that you find yourself in the unexpected position of being almost on the edge of your seat listening to the testimony from the half-forgotten dullards – such as former French president Francois Hollande; ex President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso; Cathy Ashton, once a sort of surrogate EU foreign minister; and various other former apparatchiks, advisors, politicians and ambassadors – who have had the usually bruising experience of dealing first hand with Vladimir Putin over the years.

“Musk vs Bezos: The New Star Wars,” about the space race between the two richest men in the world, is attracting plenty of attention from broadcasters in Europe, where new TV documentary has secured multiple sales.
Commissioned by France 5 from French documentary production shingle Magneto, “Musk vs Bezos” examines the intense competition between Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Jeff Bezo’s Blue Origin as they vie for the top spot in the U.S.’s burgeoning space travel business and the potential consequences for the world if the two billionaires develop the capacity to monopolize all future terrestrial communications.
“When Musk first tried to buy a Russian rocket back in 2001, the chief engineer of the Russian Space Agency thought it was a joke,” Java Films notes. “By 2008 SpaceX had a contract with NASA to supply flights to the International Space Station.”

Twenty men were convicted for their roles in the November 2015 terror attacks in Paris, which left 130 people dead, including 90 who were attending an Eagles of Death Metal show at the Bataclan theatre, The New York Times reports.
The 10-month trial largely centered around Salah Abdeslam, whom prosecutors believed to be the sole surviving member of the Islamic State extremist cell that carried out the attack, which also targeted restaurants, bars, and the national sports stadium. Abdeslam was found guilty of all the charges against him, including murder as part of an organized terrorist gang.

It took the French police just five days to track down the men responsible for the Nov. 13, 2015, attacks on Paris. In the meantime, the country was put on high alert: President François Hollande declared war on Daesh (Isis), and police were given carte blanche to bring the terrorists to justice. For those five days in November — the same period dramatized in French director Cedric Jimenez’s ticking-clock thriller “November” — the terrorists seemed to have achieved their purpose.
On Nov. 13, the terrorists attacked the Stade de France, where Hollande was attending a match; they opened fire on innocent Parisians eating at street cafés in the 10th arrondissement; and they turned a concert at the Bataclan theater into a death trap, killing 90 in that venue alone. France was traumatized. I know because I was there, ordered to stay indoors, afraid that this might be just the beginning. Like nearly everyone I spoke to,...

Night Shift stars, from left, Grégory Gadebois, Virginie Efira and Omar Sy. Anne Fontaine: 'It was exciting to create this tension and closeness in intimate proximity' Photo: UniFrance In many ways, screenwriter and director Anne Fontaine so far has had what could be described as a “good” pandemic. Her second last film Night Shift (Police) escaped lockdown disruption, premiered at the Berlin Film Festival last year and, in a brief window of opportunity, managed to come out on release in French cinemas. Meanwhile Fontaine used her enforced confinement to write her 18th feature, which wrapped shooting by the end of November and now is in post-production.
The new film kept her sane because it’s an unabashed comedy about what happens when two former Presidents (based on François Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy) meet up in the wilds of the rural region of Corréze to discuss a strategy for a comeback and regaining the limelight.

The Covid-19 crisis has devastated cinema attendance. Several major cinema chains have closed around the world. In the face of adversity, this year’s 12th edition of the Lumière Festival in France’s Lyon, which runs Oct. 10-18, aims to fly the flag of cinema even more forcefully than ever, through its on site mix of career tributes, restored classics, world premieres of new films and a classic film market.
Veteran French filmmaker Bertrand Tavernier (“My Journey through French Cinema”) has played a key role in organizing this year’s line-up, including the tribute to the classic French screenwriter Michel Audiard, who would have turned 100 this year, the award of the Lumière Award to Belgian directing duo, the Dardenne brothers, tributes to Oliver Stone and Viggo Mortensen, and a career tribute to French actress Sabine Azéma, who starred in two films by Tavernier. From Festival International des Cinémas d’Asie:
We are very sad to hear about Mr. David Kessler’s sudden death. He was director of French Cnc between 2001 and 2004. He always followed very closely Vesoul Iffac’s events, together with General Delegate, Mrs. Monique Barbaroux, during Cnc’s presidency.
He was a man of great cultural knowledge, of great working force, of big humility, a sign distinction of great men. Even during his time working for France Television, France Culture, Cmsa, Radio France, Forum des Images, Inrockuptibles, Huffington Post and has been the cultural and medias consultant for French president François Hollande, before becoming president of French telecom company Orange, he always cared very much for Vesoul Iffac. He requested to personally award the insignia Chevalier des Arts et Lettres to Martine and Jean-Marc Thérouanne at Vesoul’s Prefecture back in 2004. During Vesoul festival’s partnership with Orange company, he requested to attend Vesoul.

France’s face-to-face presidential debate on Wednesday night was a no-holds barred, gloves-off match-up between frontrunner Emmanuel Macron and challenger Marine Le Pen.
Unlike previous years’ presidential debates, this one was more boxing match than civil discourse — with both candidates speaking over one another, both constantly ignoring moderators and frustrating every attempt to reign them to order.
In the unruly — though often entertaining — face-off, the two candidates characterized each other on-air as serial liars, clueless on issues; wildly out of touch with French voters; as “an arrogant smirking banker” and “the high priestess of fear.” The clashes put some commentators...

Prince William and Prince Harry joined Prince Charles at the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge in France on Saturday. The royal family was accompanied by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and French President Francois Hollande. Will and Harry laid red poppies and a commemorative pair of soldier boots in memory of those who lost their lives during the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Although Queen Elizabeth II wasn't in attendance, she did send out a public message paying tribute to the Canadian troops who "stood far from home together with their allies in defense of peace and freedom."
