The recently released Netflix series, 3 Body Problem, has taken the internet by storm. Whispers of its greatness have been heard in all corners of Hollywood and it has done an excellent job adapting from its source material, a 2008 book of the same name written by Cixin Liu. However, when words on paper are turned into something like action, plot lines are bound to get changed and things get lost in translation.

Although the series was heavily praised for its loyalty to the book, there were some major changes made to it in regards to the story, especially on the global scale. While the creators made such a change to introduce a bigger playing field for story-telling, one country has become quite upset with how it was portrayed.

As quickly as it started, Netflix’s eight-episode “3 Body Problem” ends, in a blur of VR headsets and scientist murders and that one time they sliced up a ship like bologna.
Though it hasn’t been greenlit yet, creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo have plans for Season 2, and Cixin Liu’s book series is a trilogy. Even if this is the end for now, the story remains open-ended. So what should viewers make of the finale?
What matters most is the foundation laid in previous episodes. An alien civilization called the San-Ti is headed toward Earth, expected to arrive in over 400 years. Though their original goal was to conquer Earth and escape their own tri-solar system, they realized that human technology would advance and likely surpass the San-Ti’s by the time they arrive. “This is a funeral procession,” their VR avatar says in a previous episode.

For most of 3 Body Problem’s first season, Saul is on the fringe as his friends go through some major stuff. Auggie mandolins a panamax (or nearly so) ship. Jin gets recruited as humanity’s last hope. Will tries to live as much as he can until cancer decides he won’t. Jack gets into, and then really out of, videogaming. And while Saul’s intelligence, as well as his loyalty to his pals, is never in question, he doesn’t… do a whole lot.

[Editor’s note: The following post contains spoilers for Netflix’s “3 Body Problem” and Cixin Liu’s “Three-Body Problem,” the book on which it is based.]
Netflix’s “3 Body Problem” is based on a wildly popular book series by Cixin Liu — but how close does it come to the source material? Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have experience adapting dense novels with “Game of Thrones” — but they’ve also been in the position of having to branch away from the original text and disappointing audiences as a result. “3 Body Problem,” which they co-created and executive produce with Alexander Woo, could face the same issues.
The sci-fi drama begins with a woman named Ye Wenjie, whose father is killed during the Chinese Cultural Revolution of the 1960s. Wenjie ends up working at a mysterious military base which she eventually learns is trying to make extraterrestrial contact, and her work there ripples into the present, when a...

The world that humankind has created for itself has seen countless wars, destruction, and genocide, but probably the greatest war that we’ve been fighting as a species is one between objective and subjective morality. It isn’t uncommon for people to have a tendency to see morality from a rather subjective perspective. There are people who would justify the killing of children in the name of self-preservation. There are people who wouldn’t even bat an eye before taking life for the tenets of their religious beliefs. Then there are people who would harm other people to protect their ‘way of life.’ To be fair, 3 Body Problem indeed seems to draw similarities from several real-world issues.
3 Body Problem, for me, is a study of civilization from a microscopic as well as macroscopic perspective. The series comments on suffering, but not just human suffering. I do not think that humans...

Gone are the days of seeing Liam Cunningham as the trusted deputy of Stannis Baratheon! The knight has now embraced modernity, as he’s playing the suit-booted Thomas Wade, leader of the Planetary Defense Committee, in Netflix’s 3 Body Problem. The show is rightfully touted as the next big thing, considering it’s coming from Benioff and Weiss, the same duo who once created a little something called Game of Thrones. And like the HBO show, this one is also based on a series of super popular books—only the genre is science fiction this time.
Cunningham’s character, Thomas Wade, is the face of an organization fighting an alien race, San-Ti-Ti, whose primary agenda is taking over the world and ending humankind. Inarguably the sassiest character in the show, Wade is dynamic, very pragmatic, and also very courageous. He wouldn’t hesitate to murder a lot of innocent...

In Netflix’s sprawling sci-fi epic 3 Body Problems, Mike Evans seems to be a man with noble intentions. One day he’s trying to save an endangered species of bird, and the other day he’s trying to save all of humankind. Except for the second one, he didn’t hesitate to co-found a cult in cahoots with an alien race, who clearly doesn’t have a good intention for humanity. Evans, along with his beloved Wenjie Ye, turns out to be the primary reason for the entire mess that causes all the problems in the show. The man’s not inherently evil, though, as he takes his last breath with the belief that what he’s doing has to be for the greater good. In this article, we’re going to take a closer look at the character and the motives behind his activities in the show.

The latest Netflix series, 3 Body Problem is a commentary on the struggles of human civilization as a whole, which have led to modern-day problems like genocide. Fed up by the cruelty of human expansionism for selfish purposes, Ye Wenjie initiates a domino sequence to ensure the end of this evil that our species has created. In 1960s China, working at an observatory, she invited the San-Ti. Decades later in the present day, five Oxford-trained scientists end up caught in this ring of fire after their mentor Vera Ye dies by suicide. Jack Rooney is one of these scientists, although he has given up on science.

As this sci-fi political thriller comes to a close, I think it has moved something in me, and I can no longer seem to shake off the thought of the impending doom that awaits human civilization. Based on the book of the same name, 3 Body Problem is a commentary about the human condition and how circumstances that typically lead to self-actualization might even lead to recognizing the flaws of humankind. It wouldn’t be incorrect to assume that the fragility of human existence is no longer greater than our boosted sense of self-importance, and 3 Body Problem makes you notice this very nature of a species that might in the end lead to the downfall of another civilization.
The conclusion of the series surely leaves its audience with a gritty afterthought, questioning the very point of evolution. If the Darwinian theory about the ‘survival of the fittest’ is still in the picture for humankind,...

In the previous episode of 3 Body Problem, the public revelation of San-Ti’s impending invasion sparked widespread panic and disorder. Wade is appointed the leader of humanity’s defense, establishing headquarters at Wychwood Manor to coordinate efforts against the threat. Meanwhile, Jin confronts Ye Wenjie with the shocking revelation of her role in inviting the San-Ti. Wenjie’s contempt and her belief in the need to control humanity unsettle Jin.
Wade, recognizing Jin’s promising intellect, recruits her to devise a plan to confront the San-Ti. As expected, Jin conceives the ambitious Staircase Project, drawing inspiration from Polish physicist Stanislaw Ulam’s theory on nuclear propulsion. Despite skepticism from other scientists, Wade sees the project as humanity’s best chance to counter the approaching threat. Meanwhile, amidst personal turmoil, Will hides his love for Jin, ultimately choosing not to confess his feelings when he sees her with Raj. Auggie,...

With the San-Ti announcing their presence and referring to humans as bugs in the previous episode of 3 Body Problem, things are out in the open. The general public now knows about the war they will be fighting in 400 years. With the followers of San-Ti now completely annihilated, Wade and his forces now only have a single enemy, the San-Ti, who are 4 lightyears away, getting closer with each passing moment. However, for human nature to descend into chaos in the face of calamity is no surprise. As the news breaks out, the world witnesses mass riots and civil disobedience. Some people even begin to worship the San-Ti out of fear, hoping for mercy when they arrive. Even though their arrival is expected in the 2400s, humans have begun to irrationally stock up on supplies, the way they did during the Covid-19 pandemic. The San-Ti are unable to lie and...

The previous episode of 3 Body Problem revealed San-Ti’s intention with Planet Earth. The San-Ti’s home planet experiences frequent extinction events, which is why they need a new home. The solution to their dilemma is provided by Wenjie, who hates humankind and invites them to Earth. It will take them 400 years to reach Earth, but in the meantime, Wenjie, with Mike Evans’ help, creates a fifth columnist kind of organization against human science and development, given that humans have always been detrimental for their own sakes. After Jack’s murder by San-Ti’s followers for turning them down, Jin is persuaded by Wade to visit the organization’s London summit. Reluctantly, she complies, and at the venue, the police end up ambushing the summit. After an unprovoked gunfight started by Tatiana, Clarence and his forces finally arrest Ye Wenjie, who is revealed to be the founder of the organization.

In the previous episode of 3 Body Problem, Jin and Jack play through two more levels of the VR game, solving the riddles. Through the multiple gameplays that they indulged in, Jin concluded that the planet is part of a solar system with three suns. Inherently, the planet revolves around a single sun, but because of its proximity to the other two suns, the planet suffers from chaotic periods in the form of extinction events. The planet’s position in the system is a classic example of a three-body problem in physics that has practically no possible solution.
Proceeding to level 3, Jin and Jack find out that the game’s objective is not to prevent the planet from destruction but to ensure the survival of the people. Since a three-body problem can have no solution, the only solution to ensuring the survival of the inhabitants is for them to flee.

In the pilot episode of 3 Body Problem, set nonlinearly in 1960s China and present-day London, the series explores the background of the story. During the Chinese Cultural Revolution, Ye Wenjie witnesses her father being publicly killed by the Red Guards for his research on Western science, and, subsequently, Wenjie is herself subjected to labor work. But, when she is found in possession of an English book, she is imprisoned only to be recruited by Commander Lei who runs Red Coast, a secret project in an observatory at Inner Mongolia. Given her research in astrophysics, they believe Wenjie’s work to be crucial to the research they plan to be doing in the observatory. Initially, it seems like Red Coast was a weaponization program until she finds out the motive of the program is to communicate with extraterrestrial life.

A political science-fiction thriller based on the book of the same name, 3 Body Problem offers more than what meets the eye. It is not every day that we will come across something as thought-provoking as this series. The least it is going to do is underscore the meaninglessness of the human condition and what gives rise to misanthropy. But again, it makes me wonder about the distinction between nihilism and misanthropy. I do feel that, as of late, we need more movies and series that challenge our inflated sense of self as human beings. The way we have evolved into beings of colossal destruction, I can’t help but feel the lack of a solution to this endless cycle. As cavemen, we evolved to solve the ‘me vs. you’ problem and successfully built ourselves into a society; however, we never really learned how to adapt to the ‘us vs.

For years, fans of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy series believed the books simply couldn’t be adapted to the screen. There were too many characters, spread across multiple continents, in stories that would take years to intersect. And much of the plot was inspired by events that took place decades, if not centuries, before the contemporary action. It was an impossible task, everyone assumed. No one could do that.
