Julia Murat wins best diretor for Regra 34.
Marcelo Gomes’ trans drama Paloma was named best fiction film at Sunday’s (October 16) closing ceremony of 24th Rio International Film Festival – one of several films that stood out in the traditionally strong Première Brasil section.
Some of the features which received their world premiere in the section leave the so-called Cidade Maravilhosa (Wonderful City) of Rio with chances to build an international career, such as Property (Propriedade), Transe, and Kobra Self Portrait (Kobra Auto Retrato).
Paloma screened for the first time in Munich last July and tells of a trans woman desperate for a traditional church wedding.

Cinema do Brasil and Apex-Brasil have announced the 2018 winners of the Cinema do Brasil Distribution Support Awards. The seven chosen films will share $100,000 in funding, to be used towards international distribution. The stated goal of the joint program is to stimulate the circulation of Brazilian productions abroad.
The awarded financing is a mix of public and private funding, 80% being provided by Apex-Brasil and the other 20% from Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Itamaraty Cultural Department.
The distribution companies granted the award must invest an equal or greater sum into the P & A of the film in their markets. Once the film is released, the distributor sends Cinema do Brasil a report on audience and box office revenues for the film, copies of formal bills which demonstrate expenditures and invoices in P&A that prove to be at least twice the amount granted by the award.

Chicago – In a story that could be happening right now, Brazilian director Carolina Jabor adapted a stage play into “Liquid Truth,” about a swim teacher (portrayed by Daniel de Oliveira) who experiences a smear campaign by a parent on social media after being accused of being too familiar with of his students.

The very intriguing film keeps the situation vague, as the accusation hangs in the air while the swim teacher ponders his fate, often through actions that would place his guilt or innocence in doubt. The use of the smear campaign online is very relevant, as rumors blow up into blatant incriminations against his character, without proper investigation or trial. The title is a poetic indication of the film’s perspective.
