One of the funniest films of 2014 is finally coming to North America, as the New Zealand vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows is getting a limited theatrical release this Friday. The long-in-development comedy from Flight of the Conchords’ Jemaine Clement is a labor of love that was well worth the wait: despite vampires being yesterday’s news, no movie at 2014’s Toronto International Film Festival could match What We Do in the Shadows for pure hilarity, thanks to its dry and creative vision of undead life in the modern day.
While at the festival back in the Fall, we caught up with Clement (who co-stars, co-wrote, and co-directed the film with Taika Waititi), and his newcomer co-star, Stu Rutherford, a former It worker who got involved in the project through most unusual circumstances. We chatted with the guys about the long road What We Do in the Shadows took from conception to release,...

Think fast: Is that Jared Leto or Jesus Christ? If you said “both,” you are correct! But can you tell them apart? We always thought the ombre-loving Oscar winner reminded us of someone, but we didn’t realize his resemblance to Jc was this strong until we saw them stand side-by-side.
This weekend we said goodbye to the Coachella festival and hello to Peeps, jellybeans and any other Easter-related treat. The holiday weekend allowed for an influx of pastel-colored Instagram photos that didn’t need the help of any filter, as well as way too many adults spending time with giant rabbits. Heidi Klum got so close with one, we wouldn’t be surprised if “Bunny Baby” is soon added to her holiday repertoire. Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon planned an elaborate egg hunt for #Dembabies while the Thirty Seconds to Mars front man got a head...

There have been some very special DVD and Blu-ray releases in 2013. We saw the rise of a new grindhouse player stroll down 42nd street with the promise of cinematic handjobs. Our beloved distro company of some of the best Italian Horror features on DVD stepped into the Blu-ray market to tackle… a Western. The factory that shouts let out a great big Scream. When Ploitation meats the Arts we have found a label that can still shock us with new releases that try just hard enough to get our attention and a company called Millennium puts out movies from mid way through last century trying to Hammer their brand into our classic horror minds.
This is my personal favorite list from 2013. This could be an endless list and doesn’t quite stretch to all the companies worth nodding to. Severin and IFC put out some really solid releases as well...

The Coen brothers' movies are not, for the most part, overflowing with sentiment. Black humor, existential mysteries, endlessly quotable dialogue? Sure. Unabashed emotion? Shut the fuck up, Donny. But they've learned to lace their films with deft musical moments that do that cathartic work for them. Their new movie, Inside Llewyn Davis (out December 6th), is their deepest musical dive since 2000's O Brother, Where Art Thou? The title character is an emotionally blocked, career-stymied folk singer (played by Oscar Isaac) in early-Sixties Greenwich Village, and the film is packed with performances.

As Matt Smith is ending his run on beloved sci-fi series "Doctor Who," Jenna Coleman is just beginning. Both actors traveled to San Diego for Comic-Con International where Zap2it caught up with them for a roundtable conversation in the BBC America press room.

Survivor: Philippines is getting more predictable each week, yet the show is entertaining the hell out of me. How? Well, the Matsing tribe is shaping up to be a bigger tragedy than the following items: 1) Gilda Radner's death at the age of 42; 2) the Hindenberg stuffed with three Exxon-Valdezes; 3) Jeff Probst's hunger for daytime TV acceptance. The Matsing losing streak is just spellbinding. It can't get any worse for these guys, but mysteriously, the show keeps getting better for us. Here are my five most ponder-worthy observations about last night's episode.
1. If your favorite tribe isn't Matsing, I don't understand.
Have you taken a close look at the Kalabaw and Tandang tribes? Because it hurts. Even a passing glance makes you realize they're filled with unlikable people. Abi-Maria is a huffy spazz, R.C. is self-impressed and condescending, Lisa Whelchel and Jeff Kent are downright antigay, Pete is melodramatic,...

Danny Boyle's Olympic opening ceremony may turn a little darker after evoking Blake's 'green and pleasant land', but writers have found poetry in progress ever since the industrial revolution
With the contents of the opening ceremony shrouded in mystery for a few hours yet, the signs are that Danny Boyle will follow imagery inspired by William Blake's "green and pleasant Land" with a vision of "dark Satanic Mills" – much to the horror of the Daily Mail.
But from the dawn of the Industrial Revolution some writers have found light in all this darkness, breathlessly hailing the sublime aspects of awe-inspiring infernos and discerning triumphant signs of progress and prosperity.
John Dyer's poem The Fleece (1757) describes in exhaustive detail every aspect of the textile industry over four hopelessly heroic volumes, and the work was one of the earliest literary descriptions of the Industrial Revolution. William Wordsworth later explained...

Former CommBank chief marketing officer Mark Buckman has praised ex-rival Nab’s The Break Up campaign.
Buckman – who now leads marketing at Telstra – made the comments at a panel debate at Jc Decaux’s Connectivity Lab afternoon at Sydney Opera House yesterday.
The panel was asked for an example where rivals had done a great campaign.
Buckman, who moved to Telstra in March 2011, pointed to The Break Up which kicked off in February that year. The campaign from Clemenger Bbdo Melbourne saw Nab launch an all-out assault in its rivals as it attempted to get the message across that it was not like the rest of the big four.
Buckman said: “There was talk in the market about the big four. All of a sudden, Nab came out with breaking up with the big four. It was bang on the strategy. It was very effective.”

Note: Do not read on if you have not seen Episode 6 of Lifetime's "Project Runway All Stars."
Sometimes you can just feel the drama coming. You know what I mean? Like snow, you can almost smell it inching nearer. And this season of "Project Runway All Stars" has been relatively sedate, so I say: Bring. It. On.
This week's episode begins with the designers seated companionably around a table at their hotel suite: "When I first got here I thought Kenley was obnoxious and annoying," confesses Mondo. "But I love to push her buttons."
Could it be? Should it be? Dare we imagine this is ... foreshadowing?
On the runway, Angela Lindvall is holding eight "getaway" bags, one for each designer. "Quite the bag lady," quips Jerell, who is fast becoming my favorite talking head.
Michael wishes her next line was, "Pack your bags! We're going to Paris." No such luck.

I know I’m at Los Angeles’ American Film Market when, as soon as I get off the plane, I run into Lloyd Kaufman (in a men’s room, no less). The Troma chief serves as the Chairman of the Independent Film and Television Alliance, which runs the Afm. Who better to chair an organization and market dedicated to discovering and promoting movies created outside the studio system than Kaufman?
This November, the Afm unveils over 500 films in dozens of languages for prospective international buyers. They screen the majority of these new motion pictures at seven different screening venues in sunny Santa Monica. The Afm is the proud home for the smaller guys, foreign and art-house features and B- to Z-grade movies. Just about everything stars Michael Madsen, C. Thomas Howell and/or Billy Zane.
