Malaga-based writer-producer Ezekiel Montes is teaming with director Sergio Siruela on “Aullar,” a thriller centering on a father-daughter relationship.
Elena Martínez, who worked with Montes on the appreciable 2021 crime thriller “A Dead Man Cannot Live” and Rafa Russo’s 2023 drama “Devoción,” stars in the film as a strong and independent woman struggling to make ends meet and support her son. One day her estranged father shows up in need of help – his house has become occupied by drug addicts.
Although they haven’t seen each other in years due to his alcoholism, which was exacerbated by the death of her mother and ultimately destroyed their relationship, she agrees to help him recover his home. In the process, however, wounds of the past gradually reopen.

For the past two years, Kamar de los Reyes has been recurring on the CW’s flagship series All American as Coach Montes, head coach at Coastal California University. He had been filming new episodes for the drama’s upcoming sixth season up until his death Sunday at 56 after a brief battle with cancer.
Following the news of de los Reyes’ passing on Christmas Eve, All American executive producer and showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll shared her memories working with the One Life to Live alum.
“We are absolutely devastated at the loss of Kamar,” she said in a statement to Deadline. “He was such a beloved member of our All American family. He brought so much love, light and joy to the set every day, even during his final days. We are so grateful for every moment he spent with us. The following article contains major spoilers for the novels Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror and The Trench, as well as the feature films The Meg and Meg 2: The Trench.
One year before Steven Spielberg made us all afraid to go into the water, Peter Benchley’s 1974 novel Jaws took the literary world by storm. Nearly fifty years after publication it remains one of the most popular examples of shark fiction with few titles entering the waters of its elite circle. One such novel is Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror by Steve Alten.
Published in 1997, this sci-fi horror brings to life Otodus megalodon, a prehistoric relative of the great white shark estimated to stretch up to 65 feet in length. The novel pits retired rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham in the movies) against this mammoth beast after it escapes from a warmer pocket of water near the Mariana Trench.

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the movie being reviewed here wouldn't exist. This article also contains major spoilers for "Meg 2: The Trench."
Every summer movie season deserves a killer shark flick! After all, it was a killer shark movie that pretty much kicked off what we now know as the "summer blockbuster" way back in 1975, the immortal "Jaws." Because of that film's success, every killer shark venture is inevitably compared to that Spielberg classic, its three sequels, and the large number of copies that appeared immediately in its wake. In a subgenre that's been through the waves of popularity, postmodernism, and back, there's not a ton that's wholly new out there in the ocean.
For that reason, the Sharksploitation subgenre has generally settled into a pattern not unlike the slasher, an "if it ain't broke,...

Plot: When an evil mining operation unearths prehistoric beasts from the ocean’s depths, including multiple megalodons, rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) must suit up to face the return of an old enemy.
Review: 2018’s The Meg overcame middling reviews (including one from yours truly) to become an unlikely global success at the box office. Like its predecessor, Meg 2: The Trench is based on a novel by author Steve Alten, and what’s exciting to genre fans is that the great Ben Wheatley is behind the camera. For those who may not know his work, Wheatley is widely considered one of the UK’s best genre directors, with him having made Kill List, Sightseers, Free Fire, High Rise and – recently – the Netflix remake of Rebecca. This is different for him because it’s a big-budget event movie. How does it fare compared to the original?
Honestly, it’s a mixed bag.

"The Meg," the movie that dared ask, "What if a shark ... was really big?", now has a sequel that asks, "What if there were even more really big sharks? And also, what if we made that boring?" A film destined for the August dumping pile, "Meg 2: The Trench" is notable because it comes from filmmaker Ben Wheatley, a director responsible for the disturbing masterpiece "Kill List," the J.G. Ballard adaptation "High Rise," and more. Wheatley is an excellent filmmaker, and the idea of giving him a blockbuster budget to make a giant shark movie is enticing, at least on paper. Sadly, Wheatley can't work his magic here, as he's saddled with a clunky, dull, low-energy script by Jon Hoeber, Erich Hoeber, and Dean Georgaris. Just how do you make a movie about gigantic prehistoric sharks chomping on modern-day humans so dull? It's kind of impressive.

No one needed a bigger megalodon after 2018’s shockingly dull shark exploit, “The Meg.” But we’re getting one anyway with Ben Wheatley’s outsized shipwreck “Meg 2: The Trench,” a dimwitted sequel committed to plunge into the depths of agonizing boredom, doing so at 25,000 feet, to be exact.
At least the initial chapter came with something that resembled a story. No such luck here, thanks to an inexplicably broad script by Dean Georgaris and Jon and Erich Hoeber (the same trio that penned the first tedious installment) that liberally borrows from “Jaws,” “Jurassic Park,” “Piranha 3D,” “Alien” and so on. In certain sequences, the references from the first two of these pictures feel so shameless that one ponders whether Steven Spielberg would have a legal case against “The Trench” if he didn’t have much bigger fish to fry.

Given his grounding in visceral horror and thrillers laced with a mischievous vein of dark humor, Ben Wheatley seemed an intriguing choice to take the directing reins on Meg 2: The Trench, the sequel to the 2018 B-movie about a megalodon terrorizing a bunch of scientists and Jason Statham before homing in on a buffet of beachgoers.
The good news is that Statham’s back, bringing his rugged charm and tough-guy self-irony to sparkling dialogue like “I’ve got this,” “Shit!” and “See ya later, chum,” that last one delivered as he dispatches a prehistoric shark. The disappointing news is that the big, dumb fun promised by a terrific trailer — ingeniously cut to the 1977 Heart banger, “Barracuda” — only materializes intermittently in a movie that too often struggles to find the balance between suspense and monster-size silliness.
To be fair to Wheatley, the Brit director is not helped much by Jon Hoeber,...

Characters are finally moving forward following Billy's death.
But All American Season 5 Episode 19 revealed that these changes will impact those closest to them.
What isn't at all evident is what this will mean for next season on The CW's only renewed script series.
Where to start? Where to start?
How about Olivia, who has been vying with Spencer recently for the title of "most rudderless character."
Understandably, those two are grieving because they lost their father/father figure. Jordan is in the same boat, but he has made a faster turnaround, largely thanks to having Layla to lean upon.
Freshman Liv decided to embrace college life on All American Season 5 Episode 18. After getting involved with the Black Student Union at Gau, she discovered that the group had a social-justice-oriented Cultural Exchange Program.
It was apparent then the direction that Olivia's journey would take -- away from Spencer. That was confirmed...

Spencer finally woke up to what he had been doing since Billy's death.
However, it took professional help to contextualize his behavior on All American Season 5 Episode 15.
The way Dr. Spears explained it, what Spencer had been up to lately made perfect sense.
Spencer has been pushing down his feelings, trying to proceed as if nothing has changed in his life.
Still, he really, really, really didn't want to talk about his grief.
Finally, he exploded at whoever wanted to be there for him, enough to scare most of them off for the time being. Just giving him some space seemed to be the common thread among his closest friends.
Grace had been hanging around home for just that reason. But when Spencer almost got into a fight with Dillon, she knew that he needed professional help.

What just happened?
A key figure got killed off on All American Season 5 Episode 11.
Taye Diggs felt the time was right to leave the series, and showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll found a shocking way to accomplish that.
Billy Baker has been one of the central figures of the series, who set Spencer, the other pillar of the show, on his way to becoming, yes, that's right, an All-American.
Since Billy first coaxed Spencer to transfer to Beverly High in the program's first episode, the pair have been intrinsically linked.
Billy made Spencer, the son of Billy's old girlfriend Grace, into an unofficial member of the Baker family, moving Spencer right into their house.
Then Spencer returned the favor by moving back to South Crenshaw and convincing Billy to return to the site of his greatest triumphs, this time as football coach.
The cycle seemed destined to continue this season when...

New Delhi, Feb 2 (Ians) After the closing of the winter transfer window brought an end to a frantic month for all clubs in Laliga Santander, a look at some of the most interesting new faces in Spanish football.
Memphis Depay to Atletico de Madrid
Things are beginning to come together for Atletico de Madrid after a stop-start season, but one thing remains clear: they need to score more goals. Step forward Memphis Depay, who became a permanent signing from Fc Barcelona this month. He’ll bring goals, power and pace to lift Los Rojiblancos’ hopes of securing a top-four finish. Memphis can play up front or as a wide forward and can add some variance to Atleti’s attack. He also practically guarantees goals, having averaged more than one goal per two Laliga Santander starts with Fc Barcelona, after also proving prolific with Lyon while in Ligue 1. That’s not...

"Nothing Like the Holidays" has become the definitive Latinx Christmas movie. The 2008 film features a stellar lineup of our stars - John Leguizamo as the striving son, Luis Guzmán as the obnoxious cousin, Freddy Rodriguez as the returning brother, Melonie Diaz as the one who got away, the late great Elizabeth Peña as the long-suffering mother, and more. It's non-Latinx talent includes Debra Messing as part of a cross-cultural marriage and Alfred Molina (who is of Spanish and Italian descent) as the family's patriarch.
Watching it more than a decade after its release, "Nothing Like the Holidays" still holds up. The plot works, hitting the right emotional notes, while also keeping the audience guessing. The performances sing with real chemistry, mischief, and frustration. But why the film remains so relevant is in how it depicts the Latinx family at its center, using the Rodriguezes to get something right about la cultura.

Spencer and Olivia continued to search for some way to cope with their breakup.
Spencer was definitely winning that competition after All American Season 5 Episode 3.
Instead of just burying himself in off-season training, Spencer is sampling what life has to offer him.
Olivia has blinders on instead, targeting the coach of Gau, Spencer and Jordan's team.
So who is the more productive member of society?
That used to be social warrior Olivia. But now, with so many of society's problems that she could be writing about, she had to start an investigation that threatened to bring down the program of her ex and her brother.
This isn't to say that Garrett doesn't deserve to be exposed. Of course, he does for how he uses and disposes of his players simply to raise the profile of himself and his program.
