Founded by Maxwell Gaines in 1944, the Entertaining Comics brand (a.k.a. EC Comics) initially specialized in educational comics and stories aimed at children. But after Gaines died in a boating accident in ’47, his 25-year-old son William took control of the company and changed its direction, exploring the genres of horror, sci-fi, and satire while bringing us classic titles like Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror, The Haunt of Fear, Weird Science, Weird Fantasy, and Mad. Sadly, EC Comics was at its peak when parents started to worry about the negative effects reading comic books could have on their children, leading to things like a Congressional hearing that blamed comic books for juvenile delinquency – a claim that was backed up by the book Seduction of the Innocent, written by psychiatrist Fredric Wertham. So by 1956, EC Comics ceased publishing all of their titles except for Mad. Those classic EC...

The impact of EC Comics cannot be understated, having inspired countless horror creators, including George A. Romero, Stephen King, and many, many more. After nearly 70 years since the last comic book from EC, as first reported by the NY Times, Oni Press has partnered with William M. Gaines Agent, Inc. to introduce new EC Comics! Starting this summer, Epitaphs From The Abyss #1 and Cruel Universe #1 will kick off brand-new stories from some of today's best comic book writers, and we have all the details:
"Oni Press – the multiple Eisner and Harvey Award-winning publisher of groundbreaking comics and graphic fiction for more than 25 years – is proud to announce a brand-new publishing partnership with William M. Gaines Agent, Inc. that will see the full-fledged return of EC Comics to comic shop and bookstore shelves worldwide with a slate of all-new series beginning in the summer of 2024.

In the early 1950s, EC Comics was the bad boy of comic publishers. Its comics such as Tales From the Crypt, Weird Science and Two-Fisted Tales sold millions in mid-century America. Unfortunately, its stories — at times shocking, horrifying, and even progressive — also drew scrutiny and backlash, and the company found itself in the cross hairs of censorship and regulation at the height of the McCarthy era. The company ultimately shuttered, with the last comic hitting newsstands and drug stores in 1956.
Now, seventy years after the creation of the self-regulatory body Comics Code Authority, the infamous comics company is blasting out of the crypt and returning with a brand new line of comics.
Oni Press, the publisher perhaps best known for the breakout indie hit Scott Pilgrim, has partnered with William M. Gaines Agent, Inc., the rights holders of the EC line, to launch all-new stories with A-list comics creators beginning this summer.

Easily one of my most anticipated releases of 2024—in any medium—is writer Zac Thompson and artist Daniel Irizarri's new comic book series Cemetery Kids Don't Die. Set in a world where a gaming console known as the Dreamwave allows you to explore a virtual open world while you sleep, the four-issue series follows a quartet of friends who encounter an entity known as "The King of Sleep" in their favorite video game "Nightmare Cemetery," and that's when the horrors of the online world become all too real, leading to the friends' most epic—and deadly—quest yet.
With Cemetery Kids Don't Die debuting this February from Oni Press, we've been provided with an exclusive look at the first issue of the new series that features a blood-soaked showdown in the "Nightmare Cemetery."
You can check out our exclusive preview below, and be sure to visit Oni Press' official...

Review – Valiant’s Book of Death #1
Valiant’s Book of Death kicks off as a bit of a mixed bag.
There’s a lot I like here but what doesn’t vibe with me is hard to shake and is directly related to how amazing I just told you the Book of Death tagged Legends of the Geomancer #1 was.
Let me start with the good. I want to warn you now of spoilers from Book of Death #1, and also information they gave last month about the series’ villain.
As an original Valiant fan you are immediately fanning the proper flames of interest anytime you echo something I tend to associate with what makes Valiant great. Anytime you have a plot device that offers glimpses of the future to come you are tugging on my Rai #0 strings, a landmark comic for a previous Valiant universe and to a lesser degree an era of comics.

Marvel's Secret Wars event will give way to a new Infinity Gauntlet series from writer Gerry Duggan and artist Dustin Weaver, and you can see some art from the latter below. A "more grizzled" and mysterious Thanos than we're used to seeing will feature, along with a new character named Anwen -- an inexperienced young woman who comes across one of the Infinity Stones and embarks on "a post-apocalyptic-coming-of-age-action-adventure yarn." So what can we expect from this new Infinity Gauntlet? "In the case of this series, you’ll see some old ideas and characters in a new way, while being introduced to brand new concepts," Duggan tells Hero Complex. "There’s one idea in particular that I would love to tell you about, but Marvel holds all the Infinity Stones and would erase my answer from this timeline." Are you guys looking forward to a new take on the Mad Titan?...

Another day, another Marvel teaser! We're still no closer to figuring out what these mean however, and this latest one doesn't really offer up many new clues. It is of course based on the classic The Infinity Gauntlet six-part storyline which was published in 1991 and written by Jim Starlin and drawn by George Perez and Ron Lim. Dustin Weaver is responsible for the artwork below, and while many believe these have something to do with Secret Wars (perhaps showing how the events played out on alternate Earths), that's little more than speculation right now. Thoughts?...

Here’s your first look at Avengers #25 from creators Jonathan Hickman and Salvador Larroca. United against threats no single super hero could withstand – the Avengers have faced dangers unlike any other. But what happens when the danger is themselves? From the splintered fringes of time comes….the Avengers?! And the heroes of the past must face the horrors their present has wrought.
“After wrapping up Infinity, Jonathan and I were pretty tired. Too tired to come up with anything new,” says Executive Editor Tom Brevoort. “That whole All-New X-Men thing with the X-Men from the past has been working out pretty well for Brian Bendis, so we thought we’d jump on the bandwagon. Hence, the All-New Avengers! Sounds like the sort of thing that we’d do, doesn’t it?”
Past and present collide this January in Avengers #25. But when the dust settles, will there be a present worth fighting for?...

So Infinity (w. Jonathan Hickman a. Jim Cheung, Dustin Weaver) concluded what’s been an interesting if not exactly mind-blowing run. The Avengers return to earth to sort out Thanos and his nasty mates, Maximus of the Inhumans cracks wise and saves the world and Rocket Raccoon makes an all-too brief (like, one panel appearance). The main point of the event seems to have been to launch the Inhumanity series – which to be fair, does look kind of interesting – but beyond that, I’m not sure what we’ve learnt. None of the characters seem to have radically changed from what I, as a pretty casual Marvel reader, understand to be their default personality setting to be. What happens to Thanos (and I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say that yes, something happens to the primary antagonist in the last issue of a comic book series) is cool,...

Inhumanity #1
Writer: Matt Fraction
Penciller: Olivier Coipel
Inker: Mark Morales
Colorist: Laura Martin
Publisher: Marvel Comics
On paper, Inhumanity seems like it could be a cool book or event. There are sci-fi elements (futuristic machines and medicines), political intrigue (who will succeed Black Bolt as leader of the Inhumans), and even some superheroics (the cool Inhuman transformations, guest appearances by Avengers). It even was written by Matt Fraction, whose comic Sex Criminals was voted the best comic of the year by Time.com. But the humor and nuanced characterization that permeates Sex Criminals is absent from Inhumanity #1. In its place is clunky exposition and clashing art styles. The text heavy and (often) tiny panels allow Olivier Coipel and flashback artists Dustin Weaver and Leinil Yu little room to illustrate the past and present of the Inhumans. The first page is gorgeous, but it mainly goes downhill from there.
Inhumanity #1′s biggest weakness is its storytelling.

Infinity #6
Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Art: Jim Cheung, Dustin Weaver, Mark Morales, Guillermo Ortego, Dave Meikis, and John Livesay
Colorist: Justin Ponsor with Ive Svorcina
Publisher: Marvel Comics
The Avengers have saved the galaxy. Now it’s time to save the Earth. As writer Jonathan Hickman wraps up the Infinity event, a miniseries that has been an Avengers-centric story, he finally writes a comic that feels like an Avengers comic in Infinity #6. Having defeated the Builders in space, Captain America and the Avengers return to Earth, finding it blockaded by Thanos’ servants as the villain has pursued a personal vendetta to find his son. The boy that the Inhumans of Earth have hidden for years, Thane, is now in the grips of one of Thanos’ lieutenants, Ebony Maw, and thanks to Black Bolt’s explosive release of the Terrigen mist over the planet, now possesses powers that he doesn’t comprehend.

Guys, you’ll never guess what – Jonathan Hickman’s written a new 6-part (16 if you count the tie-ins) Marvel Event and it’s about something massive: the end of the world! Isn’t that exciting?!
No. Not even a bit.
Why? Because every single Jonathan Hickman story is about the end of the world. His Avengers title is about the ends of alien worlds. His New Avengers title is about the Illuminati ending parallel worlds. Going beyond his Marvel books, titles like East of West and God Is Dead are about the end of the world. It’s lazy narrative shorthand from a writer who doesn’t know how to make the reader care about their story to make it seem like their story is important. Hey, this matters – the end of the world is at stake! Yeah, been there, done that, Hickman.
So what’s he got in the bag for Infinity?...
No. Not even a bit.

Infinity #5
Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artists: Jerome Opeña and Dustin Weaver
Colorist: Justin Ponsor
Letterer: Chris Eliopoulos
Infinity #5 is really the end of one event story and the beginning of another. Unfortunately with only one issue left to go, that second event story is going to get short shrifted because there’s no room left. Just as Hickman barely used the room he had in the first five issues to tell an Avengers story, he barely has any room to tell the Avengers versus Thanos story that’s left. Infinity #5 shows how this storyline has just been another in the line of the Marvel cosmic Annihilation/Conquest/War of Kings/Guardians of the Galaxy/Nova stories without any of the enjoyable characterization that Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning brought to Marvel’s space bound heroes. Instead of characterization, we get Hickman’s scene after scene of a story that could just...

Back before Infinity launched, Jonathan Hickman said that you could either read Infinity with just the regular series issues or combine them with the tie-ins, but that readers who chose to disregard the tie-ins would still be able to follow the story. This was definitely a good thing as who has the time or money to buy and read every comic Marvel puts out for their Events, especially as the comics themselves tend to be average to terrible in terms of quality. Except I can’t help but feel that if I were reading the tie-ins, I’d get a better sense of the story because if, like me, you’re just reading the Infinity issues, you’re going to feel like you missed out on a lot of stuff that happened.
The “epic” galactic war that makes up half of this Event has been sketchy as hell up to this point.

Scott Snyder delivers nothing less than a tour de force in Batman #24 (art by Greg Capullo, DC Comics), continuing the Zero Year arc. This is a double-sized issue and Snyder crams in tributes to Bat-history (including a wonderful tribute to the cover of Detective Comics #27), well-placed cultural references and brand new iconic moments like his life depends on it. We get glimpses of the construction of the Batcave, Bruce Wayne gets a buzz cut that makes him look something like a crime-fighting Gareth Bale and his war with the Red Hood Gang comes to a head at a certain Ace Chemical plant…
Everything about the issue works beautifully. The larger amount of pages to play with have given Snyder and Capullo licence to go big with their story – this Batman doesn’t begin as a rumour passed around by paranoid criminals, but rather introduces himself to Gotham on the largest scale possible.

Jonathan Hickman’s Infinity is really only half an Event comic – the Event half is a really cool story about Thanos and the Inhumans while the second half is basically just Hickman’s Avengers and New Avengers series smooshed alongside it. And if you’re not a fan of Hickman’s Avengers work – and I’m not – then you’re only ever going to partially like Infinity, with the best any given issue being able to offer to readers like me being half a good comic, which this issue achieves.

As many readers know, most stories feature at least two plots – A plot follows B plot to break up the first one in order to keep things, at least in theory, lively. Infinity has two plots but one is (pardon the pun) infinitely weaker than the other and doesn’t keep the story interesting per se but rather the opposite. The first plot sees Thanos taking his army to Earth to reclaim the Infinity Gems (or so we thought) with the Inhumans ostensibly being his biggest obstacle; the second features Captain America and pretty much all of the Avengers heading out to another galaxy to join with numerous alien forces to defeat Marvel’s version of the Borg, known rather blandly as The Builders (who’re ironically all about destroying in this series). This second story is by far the least interesting of the two but it’s this story...

Jack here; I’ve bashed two weeks of my contributions to Mark’s stuff for the week of the 11th, because a) I’m behind on my writing and b) I’m not sure how to get caught up otherwise. Bit of a mishmash then, but I’m sure you can handle it, intelligent and tolerant reader.

It’s tie-in central at Marvel this week as X-Men #5 (w/Brian Wood, a/David Lopez) continues Battle of the Atom with a brevity and economy that Brian Bendis should take note of if he wants to make his lion’s share of the chapters anywhere near as compelling or characterful. Wood and Lopez deliver a solid chapter that allows almost every member of the exponentially growing cast to shine while doing a stellar job of keeping the utterly ludicrous plot seem almost grounded in some kind of reality.

Better late than never…
4th September
I bought lots of comics this week because there were lots of comics that I thought looked interesting. After being pleasantly surprised by the first book in the new Infinity (Jonathan Hickman, Jerome Opeña, Dustin Weaver, Marvel Comics) series, I was looking forward to the second issue. However, where the first issue was reasonably accessible and not a total mash of incomprehensible gibberish to any non-hardcore Marvel fans, the second has edged considerably towards this description. There’s a big space fight between The Avengers and The Builders and Thanos’s agents, the The Cull Obsidian (meaning ‘The Midnight Slaughter’, for those unfamiliar with synonyms) lay down a challenge to The Inhumans. There’s a twist at the end.
With so many factions, it’s hard to either a) understand what they all wish to achieve and b) know why this matters, if indeed it does.

Infinity #1 was an impressive start to Jonathan Hickman’s sci-fi event, but once tie-ins and other related materials start hitting the shelves a cohesive event can start to fall apart. While there are multiple tie-ins, the main ones every month are Avengers and New Avengers, as they run with the main throughline. So I will be including these in my monthly wrap up of Infinity, and you can look at the cool-looking checklist that comes with the issues below the post to get an idea of the flow. Let's get started with Avengers.
Avengers #18:
Written by: Jonathan Hickman
Art by: Leinil Francis Yu
Inker: Gerry Alanguilan
Thanos isn’t the only one with a council, and half of this issue deals with the Avengers accepting the Skrulls (you know, those hated green guys that infiltrated the superhero community a few years back) into their ranks, as they have all...

What I look for when reading anything is strong characters and a distinct narrative voice. A story can be ambitious and large in scope but if that is the focus of the book, it needs to be compelling enough to sustain that book. I’m explaining myself because I’m not enjoying Jonathan Hickman’s Infinity as much as I want to and it’s not because I don’t appreciate the attempt at telling a grandiose story that spans galaxies, but because the story Hickman has chosen, and the way he’s telling it, are the reasons why I feel Infinity is a lacklustre Event comic.
The story is that the universe creators, the Builders, have targeted Earth in their current campaign of destruction and, rather than wait until they’re right in front of our planet, Captain America has led the Avengers to bring the fight to where...

(Cbr) The stories of the Marvel Comics Universe are crafted to go on forever, which makes "Infinity" a fitting name for the publisher's latest mega event. Writer Jonathan Hickman, who reteams with frequent collaborators Dustin Weaver and Jerome Opeña on the series after a first chapter by Jim Cheung, joined Executive Editor Tom Brevoort for a "Next Big Thing" press call on the about to hit series spinning out of Hickman's own "Avengers" work. Brevoort got the ball rolling by explaining the book's high concept: a war on two fronts. The Avengers head into space to fight a coming...

I don't think anyone could've predicted the final two members to join Luke Cage's "Mighty (Avengers (?)" team after the previously announced names of She-Hulk, Superior Spider-Man and Blue Marvel. And if you're like me, you did a double-take at the name of Power Man, an identity first utilized by Luke Cage in his early superhero days. I was thinking more along the lines of Iron Fist or Daredevil but I suppose that was a bit obvious. In looking up Power Man's (Victor Alvarez) backstory I have to say I'm intrigued enough to look forward to learning more about the character. I'm on the fence about White Tiger but I'm keeping an open mind. The six-part Infinity series, written by Jonathan Hickman and illustrated by Jim Cheung, Jerome Opeña and Dustin Weaver, starts in August. No word yet on the creative team behind the 'Mighty' but where there's...

In the Marvel Now to Infinity panel, Marvel’s creators and editors teased big events in the Avengers and Cosmic families of books leading up to their biggest August event Infinity, which will be written by Jonathan Hickman with art by Jim Cheung, Dustin Weaver, and Jerome Opena. Rick Remender teased the return of dead characters Grim Reaper, Daken, Banshee, and Sentry as Horsemen of Apocalypse in Uncanny Avengers 10. This will be a universe and time spanning epic, but it won’t lead into Infinity directly. In contrast, Nick Spencer said Secret Avengers will tell smaller scale stories and continue to develop the new S.H.I.E.L.D. led by Maria Hill and Daisy Johnson as the Secret Avengers members shirk their missions and go into grey areas.

As previously speculated, this August's six-part Infinity will reportedly feature Thanos returning to Earth to wreak havoc on the planet when Earth's Mightiest Heroes are forced to leave it unprotected. After planting seeds in both Avengers and New Avengers, a team of heroes will align themselves with Nova and the Guardians of the Galaxy in order to attempt to bring together the likes of the Skrulls and Kree to combat the forces of the villainous Builders; an ancient intergalactic race who have targeted Earth - and the universe itself - for destruction. Free Comic Book Day (May 4th) will offer up our first glimpse of the Mad Titan's plans for the planet, while it has now been confirmed that Hickman will be working with artists Jim Cheung, Jerome Opena and Dustin Weaver on the main series.
