Originally titled Milsu, Seung-Wan Ryu’s 2023 Korean film, Smugglers, sheds light on the lives of haenyeos, who turned to illegal means to earn their livelihood. The film chronicled the lives of two female haenyeos, Choon-Ja (Kim Hye-su) and Jin-Sook (Yum Jung-ah), who earned their daily bread by scouring the deep sea for seafood and selling it on the open market. Most of the time, their luck delivered, and they earned enough to get by, but there were also days when they didn’t earn even a single penny. However, lately, luck hasn’t been on their side, as a nearby chemical factory is directly threatening their livelihoods.

South Korean No. 1 Soonwoo Kwon is likely to postpone his tennis career in favour of serving mandatory military service back home in the future.
All South Korean men must serve military service due to the country's specific history, which technically still has them 'at war' with their Northern neighbours. Military service usually lasts 18 months but can extend to 21 months if the person in question serves as a public service worker.
There are exemptions, for example, if you're a distinguished athlete who wins a medal for the country. Notable examples include Heung Min Son, who only served for three weeks to continue his exceptional football career.
That won't be the case for Soonwoo Kwon, who last competed at the Asian Games and shocked the tennis world with very unsportsmanlike conduct . He refused to shake his opponent's hands after losing but apologized not long after that, and we kind of know now why he reacted that emotionally.

Soonwoo Kwon has been a fairly solid player for much of his career yet his tennis is not looking good as of recently.
Kwon, who only recently confirmed his relationship with former K-pop star Wonder Girls Yubin, has been struggling with his tennis a lot lately, and it showed at the Asian Games, where he vented his frustration.
It's a strange development because he achieved the best result of his career earlier this year by beating Roberto Bautista Agut in the Adelaide 2 final. It was a remarkable conclusion because he actually lost in the qualifiers but entered the draw as a lucky loser, ending up with the trophy.
Things started to fall apart after that as he struggled with injuries, especially a shoulder injury that ultimately kept him out for six months. He returned at the US Open but lost that match, losing a couple more matches after that.

The Killing Vote addresses some taboo subjects like child Sa and bribery in the Korean legal system. It’s an intriguing show with a very fast-paced and thrilling plot that thickens by the second. The series follows a detective who is the scapegoat of the police department as he’s left to do the dirty work. He is accompanied by a cop from the cyber department who was outed for being a whistleblower by the media. They are the most eligible team to fight against The Killing Vote, which is an act of vigilantism. If they catch Gaetal, they will be hated by the public because he’s considered a man who will give commoners justice, but on the other hand, if they don’t catch him, the police department will face backlash. The show airs only one episode a week, but so much happens at once that it’s difficult to keep track!

In the middle of the lockdown, somewhere, K-dramas had lost their way a little bit. A lot of old fans thought things were changing too much and too fast, so they lost interest. But at the same time, many new fans came on board thanks to the Ott Hallyu wave and superhits like Squid Game. Call it gatekeeping or call it bias, Og fans have a special place for dramas that came out between 2013 and 2016, and recently, that spark has returned. King The Land is a classic example, and now it seems Destined With You is joining the ranks. Fantastical like Goblin and ridiculous like My Girlfriend Is A Gumiho. Right now, all the ingredients seem just right to make us fall in love with this show, like the love spell that Hong-Jo has cast in this episode.

Back in the 1970s, when Korea was closed to the outside world, locals relied on black market dealers to get their hands on everything from American cigarettes to Ritz crackers. Though this illicit import racket was run mostly by men, it wouldn’t have been possible without half a dozen uniquely talented women — skilled divers known as haenyeo who fished the loot from the sea. At least, that’s the fresh girl-power premise floated by action maven Ryoo Seung-wan (“The Battleship Island”) in his snappy, retro-styled crime saga, “Smugglers.”
Featuring a funky Lalo Schifrin-esque score (from composer Chang Ki-ha) and more wide-collared polyester pantsuits than a “Charlie’s Angels” costume contest, the movie presents itself as a lost relic of less enlightened times, but boasts gender dynamics that are very much of this moment. In early scenes, the divers earn their living fetching oysters off the ocean floor — or at...

Do Hyung runs a private organization called the Geumjeong Society, which has only one motive: to increase the power of the police force and control politics. James Kwon has been arrested after he broke into Pierce Brosnan‘s guest home in Malibu.
Kwon first broke into Brosnan’s neighbor’s house through their laundry room. He used their water and then left the house. He allegedly defecated and urinated on their lawn and went through their trash before leaving.
Then he continued onto Brosnan’s property. Kwon did not break into his house but used his outdoor shower. After he was discovered, the staff escorted him off the property.
It is unsure if Brosnan or his wife, Keely Shaye Smith, were at the house during the incident as they do currently live there.
A helicopter was used by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office to find Kwon and once he was located he was taken into custody. Police arrested him for burglary, as he used Brosnan’s water, and bail was set at $50,000.

John Oliver is not done taking swipes at the decisions being made by “business daddy” Warner Bros. Discovery. On the latest episode of Last Week Tonight, Oliver came up with a possible slogan for the streaming service Max.
During an episode where Oliver talked about cryptocurrency, he showcased a clip of entrepreneur Do Kwon talking about the volatility of companies in the digital currency space.

Oliver took the opportunity to remind viewers of Warner Bros. Discovery’s latest decision in their efforts to combine streaming services HBO Max and Discovery+ by creating Max.

Disney+ is boosting its growing K-drama slate with Han River Police, an action comedy series starring Kwon Sang-woo (Stairway to Heaven, Curtain Call) and Kim Hee-won (Netflix’s Unlocked).
Kwon will star as Han Dujin, the hot-tempered sergeant of the Han River Police Force who holds back for nobody, while Kim plays Lee Chunseok, a laid-back lieutenant with the exact opposite personality. Stuck together on patrol of Seoul’s Han River, the two officers are faced with emergency situations ranging from terrorism to everyday accidents and other incidents requiring emergency assistance — a premise that suggests all of the action, humor and offbeat crime-solving of the classic buddy cop genre.
Disney hasn’t released additional casting info for the show, but local news outlet Korea JoongAng Daily reports that Shin Hyeon-seung (So Not Worth It), Lee Sang-yi (Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha) and Bae Da-bin (Gangnam Beauty) will co-star as other cops on the Han River Police force.

Adelaide, Jan 13 (Ians) South Korea’s Soonwoo Kwon delivered a high-quality display of baseline hitting on Friday at the Adelaide International 2 to clinch a spot in the championship match with a 7-6(6), 6-7(2), 6-3 semifinal victory against Britain’s Jack Draper, here.
Kwon awaits home favourite and 2022 Adelaide International 2 champion Thanasi Kokkinakis or fourth seed Roberto Bautista Agut in Saturday’s championship match.
Aiming to add to the title he collected in Astana in 2021, Kwon entered the Adelaide International 2 main draw as a lucky loser and has capitalised superbly. After victory over Tomas Machac in the first round, the South Korean defeated Pablo Carreno Busta and Mikael Ymer to reach the final four.
Against Draper, the South Korean showcased his full array of dazzling shot-making. Kwon closed out the opening set tiebreak with probably the shot of the tournament, launching a thunderous forehand past the outstretched Brit.

Tokyo, Oct 8 (Ians) America’s Taylor Fritz battled back from 1-3 down in the deciding set to secure a 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-3 victory over Denis Shapovalov in the semi-finals to reach his third Atp Tour final of the season at the Japan Open Tennis Championships, here on Saturday.
Fritz thought he would have to miss the Japan Open after testing positive for Covid-19 in Seoul, where he had to quarantine for one week. But after arriving just in time for his Tokyo opener on Wednesday, the American has made the most of his opportunity by reaching the final at the Atp 500.
“It’s pretty amazing what I’ve been able to accomplish this week,” said Fritz, who benefitted from the withdrawal of Nick Kyrgios before their quarterfinal matchup.
“Just from thinking that I might not even be able to play this tournament to then seven days in a room, wake up at 5 a.

“I was really solid from the start. I was moving really well, I hit the ball well from the back of the court. I made it really tough for Miomir today. He played some great tennis. I was lucky enough to get it done in straight sets. Performances like this are big,” Tiafoe said in his post-match press conference.
In just more than 30 minutes, Tiafoe won the first eight games of the match to take command under the closed roof in the Ariake Colosseum. After getting on the board for 1-2 in the second set, Kecmanovic called for the physiotherapist and had his lower back worked on. When it comes to the thriller genre, South Korean cinema does not disappoint. Some might even say it dominates. And Kwon Oh-seung’s directorial debut, “Midnight” (2021), is no exception. Fleshed in spine-chilling tension, the film features Jin Ki-joo (Little Forest), Wi Ha-joon (Squid Game), and Gil Hae-yeon (In Her Place) cast in a heart-stopping game of cat-and-mouse. The film’s 2020 premiere was delayed given the Covid-19 pandemic before being made available in theatres and on online streaming platforms on 30 June 2021. Nevertheless, in spite of its subdued release, ‘Midnight’ proved a critical and commercial success, placing third at the Korean box office with a gross of 796,540 as of December 12, 2021. Additionally, it clinched the ‘Silver Audience Award for Best Asian Film’ at the ‘25th Fantasia International Film Festival’.

Seoul, Sep 26 (Ians) Do Kwon, founder and CEO of Terraform Labs that wiped out investors’ money worth 40 billion, is now wanted by Interpol which has issued a red notice for him.
South Korean prosecutors have requested Interpol’s assistance to trace the whereabouts of Kwon, the wanted founder of Terraform Labs accused of fraud following the massive collapse of the firm’s cryptocurrencies earlier this year.
The request came after Singapore’s police said that Kwon was not in the city state, where prosecutors had believed he was residing, reports Yonhap news agency.
The blockchain firm has been under investigation for alleged fraud and tax evasion after investors in its cryptocurrencies — TerraUSD and Luna — filed complaints against Kwon in May, accusing him of carrying out a Ponzi scheme over the loss of billions of won following the crash of both coins earlier that month.

The concept of a hard man ending up having to take care of a child that changes him completely is not exactly unusual in cinema, with the recipe having produced a number of truly fun films with “Kindergarten Cop” and Jackie Chan’s “The Spy Next Door” being some of the first that come to mind. Lee Chang-won and Kwon Sung-mo present a title in the particular style, which takes, though, a more dramatic path, since the child in this case is a blind-deaf one.
